From an article in the Wabash magazine talking about the '02 season...this excerpt is about the Mount Union game:

After the game, it was time for another Wabash tradition. The fans sang the school song when the clock read zero, just as they had after the previous 12 victories. Then the 52 players on the playoff roster, the coaches, support staff, parents, and alumni who had worked their way to the field, responded in kind. Voices mixed the joy from the pride of being a Wabash football player and sadness from seeing a great season come to an end sang "Old Wabash" one final time on the gridiron. Two of the Mount Union players walking toward their locker room stopped and watched as our players sang. One finally asked, "Do you do that after every game?" When he learned that we did, his only response at a school that has enjoyed the success of playing in the championship game for nearly every season in the past ten years was, "I wish we had something like that. That's really cool."

At least somebody in Alliance appreciates it.

Wally - Bash held some guys for an extra week's rest...Temarco, Peterman, Keffer, Selby, etc - we should be ready to play next week!  Still surprised Wooster lost to Kenyon!  Wow!  It won't matter next week though nor will Bash approach it any differently then a huge conference game.  Some great hits today by the Bash D - Foster, Greisl, Aaron Summers, and did you see Parker's block on Walker's punt return???

Here are some bits & pieces from the Springfield paper - pretty interesting...

Wittenberg coach Joe Fincham said the decision to play Holmes was a tough one. The need to get Holmes some playing time against Earlham and next week against Hiram with a key North Coast Athletic Conference game at Wabash following that on Oct. 22 was a key factor.

"If you run him out there and get him hurt, everyone in town thinks you're an idiot," Fincham said. "At the same time, you have to have him ready to play when you show up to Crawfordsville. Those guys can play on defense. It's not like you can just trot him out there just like today and expect him to be in mid-season form."

However, the early-season standings might be of secondary importance to the return of Holmes, whose presence should boost the team's confidence in two weeks against Wabash.

"The doctors have told us that right now his collarbone is as strong as the other one, and in another two weeks, it's going to be stronger because of all the metal that's in it," Fincham said.

DarkSide - sounds like by playing the fight song the band was showing their support for the football team win or lose.  The band leads a lot of cheers and makes a lot of noise for the team during the game.  Yes - a lot of people come out to see the football team, but a lot also come to see the band, and they support the team as well.

I know Witt could be looking ahead to Wabash but they won't get caught like Wooster did - unless Hiram does something absolutely incredible.

Wabash had still better bring it's A game to Wooster because they will need to play their best ball now. This is the stretch we've all looked forward to (and some of us with fear and loathing). One week at a time, and it starts Saturday.

Congrats to Kenyon followers and team for their win.  The "naysayers" might be proven wrong, although admittedly, it is too early to tell.  Coach Stanley apparently has them headed in the right direction; it does take time.  He did come from a program that knows how that is done, though (U of Chicago), even though it is a tough, long road to follow.   Anyway, a great win for their program; a tough loss for Wooster.

Congrats to Alby Coombs and Adrian Pynenberg for being named the NCAC Offensive and  Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Second week in a row for Coombs, I might add.

congratulations to kenyon. i've always felt kenyon and denison were by far the two classiest teams we played against, so i've had nothing but respect for the lords. hopefully their program can build on this. wooster was 1-9 in 1994, and 9-1 and NCAC champs in '97. there's no reason kenyon can't turn their program around if they're committed enough and do it the right way. winning at wooster has to help.

tough and shocking loss for wooster though. time to come out swinging against wabash. the scots will bounce back.

Ok, I will admit, my disappointment towards the way the game went led me to lash out against the band.  Yes, they were right to show their support in the manner they did.  I guess I was more frustrated about sittin in the stands among nothing but ppl who came to watch the band.  When the band was preparing to march the field before the game, many of the ppl around me were compaining that Kenyon was still warming up.  Perhaps that was because it was a football game, and the Papp is where the football games are played.  Also, Listening to a half of football of ppl around me commenting on how large the players are, and how the teams must drag any body who is large to the games was annoying.  Even more annoying was the comment that Wooster should be Purple, because of Welches??  Yeah, I have no clue about that one.  Then, once the band finished playing.  It was like half the section I was in vacated the stadium for good.  I agree, the band is the greatest group of supporters for the program at Wooster.  It just seemed to me that the people who come to the games for the band forget that there is another purpose for the Papp to be in existance, and for the young men who suit up every saturday.  I guess I took the comments of some unknowledgable fans of the band about the storied program of Wooster as a slap in the face to the program.  For that, I apologize.

Once again, I want to thank Kenyon.  As I said, they wanted it more.  With the addition of their new facilities, perhaps Kenyon will be able to make a legit push to the top tier.

Come on now Pat.  You can't expect me to take the easy way out.  In a way, that would be like cutting corners on laps.  A straight up Cheat.   ;)

Excuse me, but I have a couple of questions.  How serious is Justin Rummell's injury?  He is a fine qb, and Earlham seems to need him.  And is Tim Anderson still playing at Hiram?  Thanks in advance if you know the answers.

WOW KENYON, GREAT JOB!!!!

Once every now and then, something happens that just can't be explained.  I guess you could call it a mystery.  For example; last years Woo ~ Carthage game that saw Sutton become a non-entity for the last 3 Woo possessions.  You rub your eyes and expect to wake up from this bad dream, but you don't.  It's real; it's just a mystery!

Saturday at Woo, it was a mystery déjà vu.  It was raining, chilly, windy and the field conditions were far from good.  Woo was starting there back-up QB as Shafer stood injured on the side lines.  Yet, maybe this really wasn't the case, as Woo stayed with their shotgun offense.  Maybe it was clear and sunny and Reiff was the starting QB and all other thoughts were just a mystery.

Bottom line; Woo did not play all that well; they made too many mistakes and failed to put Kenyon away.  They should of still won the game though as adjustments to the weather and personnel were not made.  Woo was simply not put in the best position to win.  This loss goes the coaching staff, as did the Carthage loss.  They failed to make the adjustments with their offensive game plan to accommodate the situation.

Hate to be the nitpicker but Woo was Tri-Champs in '97 as they couldn't get it done vs Allegheny. Your point is valid but not completely accurate.

Rummell is done. He was wearing a boot cast and in street clothes when they played Wabash.

There is no Anderson listed on the Hiram roster.
