You should have seen Butler when Coach Hinkle was there.  Often packed.  My parents took me there when I was young.  The greatest game I remember there was a 5 OT game which Wabash won with Charlie Bowerman.  Hinkle would recruit kids from small towns (he had a lot of Butler HS coaches out there who had been players for him) and would very often knock off the best teams in the country ... Michigan with Cassie Russell is one (they were ranked #2 at the time) ... IU did not like to play Butler because of that.  There were a good number of great coaches coming ot of Indiana but Hinkle and Wooden (Martinsville Indiana) were two of the best.

AND ... they Hinkle players graduated ... just like the Butler players do today.

Bringing it to football ... Butler and Wabash used to have a great rivalry.  There were two essential games of the year:  Butler and DePauw.  Freshmen guarded the campus the week before both games, with the more likely "invaders" being from Butler

Thought some on here might be interested: Wheaton alum (93') and former Wabash D-Coordinator Neal Neathery has been hired by Larry Coker as D Coordinator for the new football program Coker is building at UT San Antonio.

Very happy for Neathery, equally impressed that UTSA pulled Larry Coker!

OWho?

Hooray! Hooray! Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops spring ball finally begins tomorrow. Christmas FINALLY arrives! The new and improved OWU football team finally comes out for display. I am happier than A BIg Walnut Golden eagle experiencing his first delicious taste of sweet sweet pig sickle.

Always and forever yours,
WAR BEARS!!!

OWU has such a dominant and successful track program, I am curious as to why it hasn't translated into more success on the football field. ???

Congratulations to the Butler Bulldogs for reaching the final four, and in Indianapolis, no less. I note the post about Tony Hinkle-he was not only the basketball coach, but coached everything else at Butler-football, baseball to name a few others.
I recall in my days-1960-63- the Butler rivalry in football was going strong-called the Iron Key game, although no one ever saw said Key,or tried to steal it. The best effort in my years was a 14-14 tie in 1962.

Good question Bash-Dad#84...OWU even won a National Championship in men's basketball....Why the lack of success on the gridiron? Because the right people are not in place with-in the program. There is no "push" for great, long lasting success.
Look at the record.....poor & mediocre are sprinkled with 7-3, 8-2 and a blue moon 9-1....Mount Union was "so-so" until they got the right man in place. The Bishops need a new perspective if they want to really compete.
"New & Improved OWU Football Team Comes Out For Display" ???
Anything will be an improvement....I won't rush out and buy my Stagg Bowl tickets quite yet. But, the youth on the Bishops could develope, because many have a lot of quaters of PT....I called the SID office and they didn't even know when the final spring game..er practice was.....That tells you something about the presence of the football team on campus.

wab64

aueagle-there may be a reason why the SID's office is cooling it with spring practice. I think there is a rule (correct me if I'm wrong, experts) that spring practices/games-early fall practices, intersquad and opening scrimmages are not to be publicized. I found this out when I called SID Brent Harris to find out why in hell nothing was reported about the red/white scrimmage or the annual do with Wheaton. Perhaps your SID's office wrote off the whole thing since they couldn't write about it, there possibly will be no scrimmage at all, and their time would be spent on spring sports duties and honors for graduating seniors. Besides they have both boys and girls to cover.

According to Wabash's website the upgrade of baseball, soccer and football facilities which were put on hold due to economic factors are now back on the agenda. The upgrades will be completed in time for the 2011 season for each of those sports.
Repulse them, repulse them!  Make them relinquish the ellipsoid!

You are correct.  These athletic upgrades are long awaited and very welcome.

From the Grand Rapids Press:  Tim Rogers, one of the late DePauw Head Football Coaches and now most lately the head football coach for Catholic Central HS, has been fired by Catholic Central for mishandling an athletic fund which over which he had sole supervision.  Hmmm.

Sounds like he has a problem. He needs help, and needs to stay away from the till.

NCAC rules don't allow the player to do competitive drill in spring practice.  No drill that would put an offensive player vs a defensive player even in a position drill.  Spring practice is footwork and routes vs air.  Any school doing more is braking NCAC rules (not d3 rules).
