Bashbrother:

Awfully kind assessment of yesterday's game.   It is, after all, only the first game but the tell-tale signs of a long season are there in plain sight.  The team will go as far and the QB and offensive line will take them.  I remain hopeful but not optimistic.

Bash Hokie -   I, as many Bash faithful, remain concerned over what we saw on Saturday.   It was the first game with probably the most first time starters Wabash has fielded for an opening game in a long while.

It will take time for this team to develop.

I think if Belton throws 4-5 balls away it's a totally different game.  He was probably trying a little too hard and he had to be uncomfortable missing his top two receivers.  Seemed like he had time to throw on most of the sacks.

Guess it depends on what your definition of "long season" is.  Wabash's next six games are: @ OWU, vs. Chicago, @ Kenyon, @ Wash U, vs. Oberlin, @ Denison.  Even if the LGs aren't where most of the fans want them to be at this second (and I'm sure the players and coaches know even moreso than you or I that Saturday's game wasn't good enough to get where they want to go), you don't need to be great to win those six games.  That's a lot of time and a lot of game snaps to improve and mature before the crucial back third of the season.

I, for one, would have liked to see what the 2nd QB had.  Running around to sack yourself is disastrous.  A couple of passes were right on the money ... to the other team.  Brady Young ... Brady Young ... hello.  O line was fine but not brilliant.  D was put in hole too many times when should not have been.

Woo had a good plan ... pressure/rush the QB, and they really "wanted" the win.  Question the fg with 4 minutes to go when could have gone "all in" for the first down to try for the eventual score.   At Wabash ... 4 min to go ... Wabash (with run game) can last 4 minutes ... or at least enough to make it reasonably out of reach for Woo.  Think Woo should have gone for it rather than fg and rely on D ... and then no on sidekick?  Wooster QB ... all dayt ... ran forward when cornered.  He will be a weapon.

I thought Wabash was disorganized on O once Chamblee was out.  No threat in flat/run after catch for TD after that.  Superior talent won out in the end.  Can Wabash get there in the next couple of games ... so as to be a credible threat to Witt?  Don't know ... looking only at Sat ... some real question.  Time to WAF and really WAF.   D will have to carry.

Let's not get carried away. They looked remarkably poor at times, though Chase still ended up throwing for 250 and running for 85. He WAS the offense after Chamblee left, he just happens to be a sophomore who made several stupid mistakes. But he certainly wasn't alone... what were the penalty totals?

As things stand right now, if you started playing musical quarterbacks, you can go ahead and flush the season.  It'd be 2004 all over again.

This team, especially the Offense,  is much like a good soup, it has all the prime ingredients, it just needs to be stirred a little before the flavor can come out!

Chase Belton is a Sophmore, he will make mistakes, but he will also do great things. Even without his two Senior Wide Receivers, he has talented and experienced men to throw the ball to. They will also do great things. It is their turn to become the "House hold" names of our offense. Once that happens, Yoder and Mambourg will be able to do their thing.

We have time to be patient here, as long as we improve from week to week!

I'll throw in my one cent. Wooster is a lot like Wabash in that their inexperience showed big in the first game against B-W. We all know how much difference one game makes when it comes to getting rid of the jitters, settling in to being a "starter" for the first time, and just getting that game feel.

I think Wooster is going to be a pretty decent team this year and definitely in the top 3 or 4 teams that Wabash will face. Woo has talent and brought their A game, now it is time for Wabash to do the same.

That just gave me flashbacks..... it was brutal.

To everyone who remembers when it all started for Wabash and the football playoffs:

It has been a rather devastating past few weeks for the '77 Stagg Bowl team.  Toni Barrick, who took over as our placekicker after the first few ballgames died suddenly recently and I was notified this weekend that All-American QB Dave Harvey is battling cancer.  Please say a prayer for these two men and their families.

I am very sorry to hear this news.  I remember playing against them in the Hope/Wabash game that year (of which I've discussed here on this board in the past).  I will definitely keep both of them and their families in thought and prayer.  Certainly hoping that it is the Good Lord's plan that Harvery will be able to recover from and beat that disease.  Please keep us updated.

I'd only change to Miracle in case of injury or ineptitude now.

Miracle isn't number two from what I saw.  Who knows though in a game situation?  BTW, word on the grapevine is Wes and Kody out for the season...  That affects the special teams as well as the offense.  Big time bummer! :(
Been rooting for Dear Old Wabash since 1976...

Turn the clocks back three years...the Little Giants were traveling to Selby Field having lost the unquestioned senior centerpiece of the offense to an injury in the first game.  The offense was sputtering and largely rudderless during a game at Millikin and for the first half of that game in Delaware.  Then, something magnificent happened.  A virtually unknown sophomore named Matt Hudson took over in the second half, steered the team to two TDs in the second half and Wabash wound up running the table in the NCAC and playing in a regional final that season.

Circumstances aren't that different right now.  Roles will be redefined over the next few games just as they were in 2007, but they will be defined and Wabash will be at their best when the chips get shoved into the middle of the table over the last three weeks.
