ouch, I have complained a lot about these silly uniforms we have seen, but this has too be the biggest joke yet. Maryland obviously has no shame. But Notre Dame doesn't either playing their wide receiver so I don't know what's worse.

David, there was a terrific lightning storm starting at 8:45 at Wittenberg, barely into the second half. It got worse and worse as the teams waited. It didn't actually start raining until 11. It looked at first as if it was going to be a no-contest. Then there was more discussion. The rule book came out. They agreed to try again on Sunday. There was no way they could have continued the game Saturday. That storm didn't let up until maybe 5 a.m.

Responding to a request for a photo of Ye Olde Skull Trophy, here is a photo of what may be the original skull. I found it in a filing cabinet in the library of the News-Sun along with a bunch of old photos of Wittenberg's campus. I doubt it has seen the light of day for decades. The date on the back is Sept. 22, 1938. It reads, "Witt Trophy, Gold Skull." I don't know if this is a real skull or what. I know the new trophy isn't a real skull.

I can understand that it's an homage to the Maryland state flag, but there are some flags that are not helmet worthy...

thanks for the info on springfield. There was no way to continue in michigan either as the storms there lasted all night. Along with the lightning which on the second delay was pretty severe as I mentioned before the rain was very heavy. You had to drive through high water on Saline south of the stadium getting out of town. The bad thing about the first delay was before the teams and marching bands were off the field there was sunshine again and we waited through good weather for 30 minutes to start play again. Oh the game at Eastern Michigan which is 5 miles east of ann arbor didn't start at all and was also played Sunday.

Wow. That's awesome. Thank you for posting that. +k

I assume the new trophy is a replica of that one?

Here is the current skull trophy. It's obviously not a real skull, which I think is what they want. Somehow I don't think carrying around a real skull would go over well these days.

After some poking around Google I saw that the original was an Indian's skull? Yeah, using an actual Indian's skull is something that would go over well anymore. The new trophy is still plenty cool.

The real question is, when is the last year that OWU actually was in possession of this skull?

The last time OWU beat Wittenberg was in 2004.  The Bishops started 0-4 that year, including a game where they gave up something like 750 rush yards to Olivet.  Then they went bananas, ripped off five straight league wins and played the Fighting Suttons on the last weekend for a playoff spot.  Pretty wild.  Anyway, I believe the skull took a hiatus from the rivalry, so I'm not sure if OWU actually got the trophy when they won that game in 2004 or not.

This shows it was 2006. I remembered that one because we were at Jack's wedding in Columbus and I was the jackass who kept checking the scores under the table and spread the news that Witt had lost.

Oh man...I'm losing my touch.  Need to hit the stats archives a little harder.

"Indian Sensitivity" is why the original skull was pulled....I don't think this wiil be another 2004, when the
Tigers roar into Selby for the 7 pm night-cap. If Witt shuts down QB Espo...the Bishops could be in trouble.
With 7 yards "net" rushing against the Big Red, OWU can't just depend on 193 yds passing.
Great to see Sr. Keegan Varner with a 64 yd INT to the Denison 6 yd line. After getting bounced out at QB,
Varner has been a leader in the defensive backfield.
WHY is the 2012 NCAC baseball tournament in Chllicothe, Ohio? That's the home of D3 power & OAC Marietta College.
Shouldn't we have it at Wittenberg's Carleton Davidson Stadium....great location and one of the best baseball parks
in D3. Or are we recruiting the Pioneers into the NCAC.
