Questions/Comments after Week 1

1. Tiger by the Tail or Tale of the Tiger? -  How good was Witt... how bad was Capital? (I think Witt was good.)
2.  aahhh What's up Croc? - Gheny seriously went from beating Bethany 28-0 in '10.. to losing 28-7 on Sat. ?
3.  Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Barnes - Will we see....... the 1st or 2nd Half Wooster this weekend?  (I'll take the 2nd)
4.  A Yeoman Like Performance - When was the last time Oberlin won 42-0?
5.  Cinnamon Twist -  Who is with me on being a Big Red Fan this weekend?
6.  How bout them Dawgs! - Hiram favored to win in a football game?.... I like it.... go get the win!
7.  Wing-what?  - A Bishops Football Team that is victorious with only 14 yards rushing?

I agree that Witt is scary good! Wooster, I think, will be better. And Oberlin could be a surprising handful if teams read the jersey and don't look at the film.

Denison needs to wipe the floor with those crazy pacifists from Richmond. Hiram may get a couple of W's. Yay for them.

And finally, to put it in the vernacular of the show I am now somehow addicted to (and watching now)...in terms of being a surprise team in the NCAC and pushing one of the W's.

Wabash Always Fights!

DadofBashWarrior..

First chance I have had to get to a puter since sat afternoon...

Wabash Wheaton Scrimmage...

No major injuries that I know of...and did not seem that we had anyone dinged up either....They were checking Horn during halftime ....but he is fine as I spoke with him and Wes as they are the only ones I still know pesonally from when Andrew was there...

Wheaton did have a player down and it was one of the bad hits and it was scarry for a while....crowd very quiet etc....but he ended up walking off and I know that all were very releived...I did speak with a Wheaton coach after the game and the player was fine....So all is good in that respect for both teams....

It was very warm and we were expecting 40% chance of precip...Ultimately with a few min to go in the forth quarter it ended with a lightning delay and was finally called off completely...the worst part of that is the ability to get a good look at the frosh at both ends of the field as the usually do...

Scoring was as I said earlier 27-3 at half with Wheaton putting the points up...additionally they had one FG in the 3rd...

We were dressed in white jerseys with QB's in red and Wheaton was dark with QB's in white...and it was just touch the QB to get the whistle...

Belton started at QB and went several series...then #11 Walsh came in....Burke did not play till the second half....

Since we were platooning QB's last year and saw three on Sat I will not give opinion about them other than to say that while Belton had the ball there were many times they touched him and it ended the play and it never would have been close to actually ending the play in real time....

It was not pretty...

We did not appear ready to play....Yellow Yellow Yellow...so many Illegal procedure it was so dissappointing...QB fumbles...many turnovers....

WR that started were Horn 19 Wes 84 and 23 Sean Hildebrande....

I do have to say we certainly know what Wes and Horn can do...But it was very pleasant to find Hildebrande showing up....particularly well done by him was KO returns...He took KO returns of:

3 yds deep to the 23...26 yd return
1 yd deep to the 29...30 yd return
Goal line to the 30... 30 yd return

Hildebrande also blocked well down field (my first pet peave about WR is if they are not tough as nails on the down field blocking)

Also Derek Rowe #34 made some very nice cuts...he knows how to run and I think we can expect some good things from him...

The line starters on Offense were 61 59 78 65 62...but not in that order...
We threw some good short passes...never threw anything long all day....some balls were off the mark

Hard Hats...

#1 made some very good plays on their number 4 (very tall WR) on very long pass plays to get the incompletion when the reciever had position and height and the ball even in his hands....and yet he did not come away with a completion...those plays actually may have been the highlights othet than the usual CJ GUM smashmouth...he will be fun to watch this year ..again....
Scola lloked like he was making it happen as well....

There were some times when I could not tell who was missing the coverage...but a wheaton player would be wide open by 10 yards...and Wheaton's number 15 actually looked very good....Wheaton also had a big freshman RB that played most of the game...am certain we will see more of him to come in the future...

I have seen 6 of the last games we have played Wheaton and I also am very familira with them as I usually seem the play once a year against North Central...or as in last year saw them play Hope College...This was by far...yes by far the worst showing I have seen against Wheaton....

We did score first...so it was 3-0....and that was after we were moving the ball well and then fumbled it away....

Hopefully the coaches saw well enough the work that needed to get done...

I certainly don't mean to harp...as I have said this in the past...about being very disciplined....the Yellow was flying all day...

I really do believe we have some awesome potential for this team...

Make IT Happen....!!!!!!!!!!

I plan to be at the Chicago game

Stunning facts from Oberlin while trying to figure out the last time they lambasted an opponent.

They last shut out an opponent in 1982. That was St. Francis (PA), who they have a perfect 2-0 record against.

A 69-0 win over the University of Chicago in 1974 was the last time they really put the wood on an opponent. They had a 52-7 win the next year, a year Oberlin played just six games. This wasn't the 1920's, it was the 70's. Six games? Any Yeomen scholars out there to help us on why they didn't play more?

I love it that their record against THE Ohio State University is 10-13-3. This from a program that had one entire 4-year class not win a game in the 90's. They are also 3-1 against Purdue.

Also, they wish that Case and Western never united. They were 27-20-2 against Case Tech and 25-18-4 against Western Reserve, but just 5-29 against Case Western. Oberlin is 9-8-2 lifetime against Mt. Union, 12-6 against Baldwin Wallace and only 12-19 against Witt. Not bad against team 700.

They also 'own' Kenyon...well...39-36-6. But Denison crushes them (16-47-3), Hiram beats 'em (24-28) and OWU is 21-48-1. 'Gheny is just 18-26-1. I thought they would be worse.

Anyway, that's your Yeoman minutae. For no other reason but because I wanted to look up their last blowout and it all came cascading out...

And in looking at their football records, they have a guy named Keith LaDu that seemingly tackled everyone that went through the line from 1984-87. 712 total tackles. Of course, how many were just 'pile on' tackles? He was credited with 31 against Marietta in 1985.

Thanks for the report, DoBW.

I know that Wabash and Wheaton have been doing this scrimmage annually for a long time now and it's generally something that everybody looks forward to.  I think it's easy to put way too much emphasis of what happens during that scrimmage.  Last year, the "score" vs. the 1s was favorable for Wabash, but the cost was pretty enormous.  In 2008 I believe the scrimmage (1s vs. 1s) was pretty even, which got everybody excited for the playoff game vs. Wheaton...and that really didn't work out very well either.  The point is that good, bad, or indifferent, the result of that scrimmage doesn't mean a whole bunch.  It doesn't get talked about on selection weekend and it doesn't count on the record.  Whether it was good, bad, or indifferent...

As long as the guys are ready to go in Wooster on Saturday, nothing else matters.

To extend on bashbrother's Questions/Comments....
Gators: I like the new helmets. Has a CFL feel to it. AC could lose the next 4. 0-5?
Why do I think these guys are alwys on the cusp of turning it around.
Big Red: They get to feed on Earlham & Puppy for 2 weeks...That should help them. Look for Denison to explode
with their athletic program. They have an outstanding person at the top now (x-OWU c.oach). The new swimming dynasty
and they are going to push the grid-iron program...wait n see.
Hiram: Game of the week at Charles A Henry Field...Lords & Terriers...119 yrs of Hiram football...262-602-31.
Great recruiting class for HC this year....
OWU: Witt comes in with 4 All-NCAC starters...Wesleyan has one. Put the Bishop back on the helmet

The Chillicothe stadium is a very nice stadium. A little old but it does the job. I always go too the ncac, gliac, and mac tournaments every year(maybe ohio will someday get a new coach so they can compete). Add the summer league and it makes for a great day or evening.  In the summer league a couple of years ago Chillicothe had a underhand pitcher who picked off at least 3 guys at second. I know I was there. it made for great summer moments watching college ball.Oh and they have the best hamburgers also.

I mostly read the posts here and rarely speak, but I have heard that the men are working hard to correct their mistakes and morale is high at practice! I have felt all along that this team will be special and I'm sticking to it. I am so looking forward to Saturday. Let the prognostication end and the hitting begin...click - clack

Alright...Wooster/Wabash.  Let's talk about it.

Wooster had some typical first game negatives...turnovers, penalties, etc.  I would expect some of that to get cleaned up.  Cam Daniels is out for Wooster which will hurt their pass game, but I'm not sure that means that the Wooster offense can't go.  As long as Barnes is upright, there's a chance that they can make a big play.

Wabash won't be able to afford the same kind of first game meltdown that the Scots had last week.  The LGs will need to be sharp (see Wittenberg from last week).  Hanging on to the ball and staying in front of the chains will be important.  Looking at the two deep, I'd say that Wabash has a clear #1 quarterback...I'm not anticipating a rotation on Saturday.

Two more days.

Noticed that as well. And noticed the "or" next to Burke and Walsh. Interesting.

rivalry game in Delaware this weekend. I like how these schools have moved this game the last two years to a night game. Any chance for the bishops? Also, whats the deal with all the freshman playing? Think its crazy how kids play one season then don't play the next.

smedindy

It's been like that a while at OWU. I wonder if it's academics or realizing that college sports are tough, even in D-3? In the article about start-up programs, the coach at Birmingham Southern said that they had a lot of melt because kids weren't cutting it academically. It's a matter of recruiting not just those who will be admitted, but those who will survive and thrive.

Speaking of commitment to your school,   #3's film is being shown at the Milano Film Festival In Milan Italy this weekend,  and Russ has worked the schedule out to listen/watch the game on-line before his film screens Saturday evening in Italy.   Radio crew, give him a shout out..... I am guessing that he may be the farthest listener from home..... Well, I'd have to get my ruler out because it will probably be close between his location and Cave in Africa.

Glad to hear that #3's effort is getting major screen exposure and he's (hopefully) enjoying some northern Italian hospitality.  Believe you'll find about 3300 miles difference - 9856 miles from C'ville as crow (not Delta) flies, BB... we're quite south of the Tropic of Capricorn in addition to the eastern azimuth though in same, longitudinal time zone.   ;)  Cheers, and WAF!

JEEZ ... "Eastern azimuth" ... "Longitudinal" ?  Sounds like Division I terms ... an involuntary sudder accured in reading these and a flashback to Easy Ed and Saturday morning Phys-Chem.  (That is:  from the period of the REAL Phys-Chem required for everyone.)

Now back to normal programing.  Go Wabash and thump the longitudinal azimuth out of the Woosters.

Great job by OWU Jr. Def, End James Huddleston NCAC Player of the Week
2 sacks (loss of 7yds) - 4 tackles (loss of 14 yds) - many key plays/tackles
bishopowu: OWU has a history of going with a "youth movement"
A couple of x-Bishop players have, in the past, on D3..talked about this.
Can't really give you the best answer on it.....There have been changes
in the staff at OWU & a high influx of out-of-state student/athletes (better
financial package for out-of-state than in-state?, perhaps)...
