Here's some data....Belton is 8-1 as a starter at Wabash (8-2 if you want to count the Witt game last year where he didn't start but split series with Burke).  That's pretty good.  Coach Raeburn is 29-6 at Wabash.  He obviously knows what he's doing.  If Belton playing quarterback didn't give Wabash the best chance to win games, I have to believe they'd be doing something different.  Trust the track records, gentlemen.

Against Witt last year, two quarterbacks was the worst idea ever.  Seven days later agaisnt DePauw, two quarterbacks was the greatest offensive innovation since the blur.  It's easy to be overly knee-jerk to one game.  At Wooster, Wabash just took one sack.  OWU got to Belton seven times on Saturday and all of a sudden it's a crisis.  Wabash won by three touchdowns!  The LGs are off to a great start in 2011...let's enjoy it.

firstdown

WABCOL86 - the Colts have a quarterback problem, the Little Giants do not.  The Little Giants have been solidly in control in the games against Wooster and OWU.  Both teams provided good tests for the LG's.  It is too bad about the injury to the Wooster Quarterback Barnes.  As to the LG's, a lot of players were in on Saturday which builds depth for the next 8 regular season games and a run in the playoffs.  The defense showed a 3 man line along with the 4 man line this week.  Along with another week of punishing hits.  This gives opponents a lot more to have to prepare for.  The offense turned on the jets enough to stay well in control, but the key is, unlike the defense, to show as little as possible.  OWU had some good pass coverage and d line play.  The LG's are no doubt working on adjustments.  Finally, I would rather see the  quarterback eat the ball a few times and take a sack, that throw up wounded duck or two and get intercepted.  In a game where you are in control, giving up some sacks isn't fun, but it sure doesn't turn a game around quickly like an interception with a long run back can do.

Chase had an Efficiency Rating of 238 on saturday.

2008 is the last time a Bash QB produced a rating that high.

238 is lovely, but ratings don't win games.  Neither does lack of pocket presence or decision making ability.  Chase is a great athlete, and when he does things right looks great.  BUT, he doesn't seem to have grown in those two areas I just mentioned.  I am enjoying us winning, but thinking about the future.  Against teams better than OWU or Wooster, he cannot keep doing that.  And as far as wounded ducks, well, in at least five of the sacks he had plenty of time to throw the ball out of bounds.  Against UWW, Witt or Mount it won't work.  We are winning in spite of the issues, and I pray that continues.  I've only been going to Wabash games since 1976, seen some great things and some not great things.  I just want Wabash to win and advance, and maybe bring home a National CHampionship some day.

Well, I mean, they KIND of do. They're not, like, INVENTED arbitrarily.

Raise your hand if you think throwing a touchdown for every five passes is a good thing....

You are what your record says you are.  Belton is 8-1 as a starter.  He threw for 252 and 4 TDs on Saturday.  How is that not good enough?  Was he perfect?  Nah.  But who is?  Who plays perfect quarterback every single week?

I'm not sure why this kid is having such a hard time getting over with the crowd.  All he does is win games.  I have a feeling that instead of taking those seven sacks on Saturday, if he had instead just flung seven balls out of bounds at the first hint of pressure he'd catch crap for that as well.

I wouldn't need three guesses.

fijidoc

I was at game saturday.  After Horn caught touchdown, did he got back into the game?  I don't remember seeing him.  Anybody know what happened?

WABCOL86

Fijidoc, where were you?  I was down on our sidelines by the Allen Center....  Horn got dinged on a catch, was real gimpy and the coaches apparently held him out after that.

Guys, don't get me wrong.  I LIKE the kid and he does win, but what you seem to be missing from what I am saying is that where he is now is where he was this time last year skill set wise- and that won't work against really good teams.  He's a junior with a lot of time in the system.  It worries me, and I get paid to worry in my job.

I want us to stay healthy and make a long run this year.  We have some incredible athletes, especially at receiver.  Hunt could be a good one at TB.  The defense looks good.  To go back a ways to the old Oakland Raiders, "just win baby!!"

Not true.

I will chirp in.......

I think the hyper-sensitivity comes from the fact that we are seeing some of the same issues from last year with Chase.  We also are sick of losing to Witt (although they were close games, they were still losses)  Now,  Is it a complete over-reaction, yep.... at least on my part it is.

We'll be fine, Chase will be fine and I look forward to his continued maturation at his position.

BashDad:

Last year he didn't have Wes, either and many other unknown quantities at receiver.  I am referring to the decision making, the sacks and the apparent inability to do his reads.  I hope he matures, but time will tell best.

Over-reaction perhaps, but realistic in outlook, certainly.  I really want to be proven wrong.  Track records says otherwise to date.
