Vick and Vince Young didn't get switched but it sure got discussed a lot. Any white QBs have to defend not getting switched to RB or WR like they have? And Steve Young was given the time to develop without jumping the gun making him an RB (as was proposed for Chase on this very board). If you won't see how different the treatment is, I'm not going to waste my time trying to point it out to you.

To be fair, Steve Young started at RB...for the USFL's LA Express...because they had no other choice. He then was rushed into Tampa Bay and when the 49ers got him he had a chance to develop. Had he stayed a Buc, well...he may not have been Steve Young.

BTW, this isn't the pros. Having an option like Belton at QB is gravy. Also, we're failing to give any credit to the OWU defensive line, or any damnation of the Wabash offensive line. Those sacks don't happen in a vacuum.

Besides, the pros are much more 'vanilla' that you think, as per the Chuck Klosterman article about Maine Maritime and Amherst. So the pros are very conservative about anything oddball and if there's no real success, then they abandon it.

Yes they did. So did Warren Moon. So did Doug Williams. We can list lots of good to great black QBs. My point wasn't that it isn't possible. And their success doesn't change the perception of athletic black QBs. They're never "mature" enough or "poised" enough, or "can't get through their progressions" or "can't read defenses". Anything else they can't do that I've left off?

We are getting away from the issue,  it is not whether or not the OWU defense gained penetration or the down field coverage was superb,  it is Chase's decision making when these things occur,  last year,  I called it his "Superman Complex"....   instead of getting outside the tackle and throwing it into Mud Hollow or over Chapel,  a few times on Saturday, he tried to be "Superman" and lost yardage.  (still better than throwing an INT)  That is all I am saying.  His speed and quickness are not a surprise to the league any more.   So I guess you take the occasional scramble in which he finds room and breaks a good one with the occasional scramble that ends up losing a few.

I have been and still am a huge fan of his; have been since the day he landed in C-Ville.   Just would like to see him mature a bit in this area........  That is ALL nothing more.   He is our starting QB and that is a GREAT thing.

*Sacks in bold.

For NCAA stats sacks don't figure into the QB rating and the yards lost come off rushing not passing yardage.

I'm aware of that. What are you getting at?

Since you highlighted the sacks I was pretty sure you were aware.  Just highlighting that the QB rating doesn't tell the whole story.

This.

Knott got sacked.  Harbaugh got sacked.  Huff got sacked.  Hudson got sacked.  None of those guys took the heat for getting sacked like Chase did this week.  None.  Fellas, like it or not, this is our guy for the remainder of this season and all of next season.  This is a fact.  You can either get behind him and start celebrating the two dozen or so plays he makes every game and stop smashing him for the 2-3 plays he misses or you can wait until 2013 when someone else takes snaps.  We've got a damn good quaterback...right this minute.  Cheer him.  Celebrate him the way we've celebrated our quarterbacks for the last DOZEN years.  Support him.  This nitpicking of a few batted passes last week or a few sacks this week does zero good.  Chase Belton is our guy.  Get behind him the way Wabash fans get behind OUR guys.  He's earned it.

firstdown

I watched the replay of the Wabash - OWU game on Channel 6-2 last night.  I was even more impressed with Chase Belton, and the way that he played.  I concur with Wally Wabash that Wabash has a darn good quarterback right this minute.  His play when the pressure was on, the long TD pass, and the throw of the end zone for a first down to the tight end were all things of beauty!   Enough needless nit picking!! 4 TD passes, an outstanding QB ratings, his outstanding play when the team was backed up deep nears the goal line, and making good decisions to take a few sacks rather than throwing the ball for interceptions speak volumes about Chase Belton.  Let's get behind all of our guys as Wabash fans always do.  The "hard hat D" was delivering blows from begining to end of the game with some great stops in the red zone.  With the defense, offense and special teams already all delivering big plays, Coach Raeburn has the team on track for another stong season.

Holy cow did we blow this thing out of the universe.  I am obviously a huge fan of ER, of Wabash football, and I have enjoyed watching Chase play (no doubt) - I wasn't calling for a change nor questioning anything with the exception of making the comment that it is frustrating to see Chase struggle on his checks.  If the primary receiver is covered, look out.  There just doesn't seem to be a 2nd, 3rd, nor 4th option...in these 1st two games and I'm wondering why.  I would think by now it should be much easier and much more comfortable for him - being a Junior with a lot of game experience.  Where is the poise in the pocket?  I also commented that Chase shows flashes and makes some great plays - he did Saturday!

I am certainly behind our team and Chase - I just hope he can improve in this area so he can play to the potential that we all know he has.

Wally - we obviously struck a nerve with you :) - did Harbaugh, Knott, and Huff get sacked?  I can't remember.   ;D  At least when I think of those guys playing, I don't have a mental picture of them getting sacked repeatedly.

...continued...

I remember Knott making "the throw" in the Witt playoff game to Bronaugh, in to the wind.  I remember Knott launching the tipped TD vs. DePauw with 2.6 seconds left in the game...

I remember Harbaugh absolutely shredding Albion in the 1st round of the playoffs...

I remember Huff throwing for about a million yards against Franklin before he BLEW his ankle on the hands team.

WABCOL86

BB16, right there with you.  Some people seem to think that ANY criticism is running the team down.  It's not.  We are simply pointing out some deficiencies we notice.  I am sure ER has as well.  Hopefully, we will see improvement in those areas and we will win them all this year!!

Er, Harbaugh, that guy-- he took 31 sacks his senior year which HAS to be a record. Throw the ball away, dude.

This conversation unfortunately began with a repeated suggestion of moving Chase to RB. Regardless of whether the following posts supported that (totally absurd and demeaning) position, it certainly framed the further criticism. No-one around here WASN'T annoyed by the 7 sacks, but exaggerating those admittedly un-poised plays to a broader Belton-Doesn't-Read-Defenses argument seems misguided. He read the D pretty well for the majority of the game as his strong numbers reflect. He was damn-near flawless in burying a team early that gave Witt all it wanted for 3/4 of their last game.

I doubt very highly you'll be remembering Belton for sacks. He's going to give us several big-game memories, count on it.

firstdown

BB 16 - given your long history and keen observations, I value your opinions greatly, which are given in the spirit of improving the program.  I remember more than once in 2003 wishing that Harbaugh would count to 6 or 7 and just fall down, rather than throwing it up for grabs.  He did have some very good games that year - I remember him blowing Witt apart that year, and becoming an outstanding quarterback.
