I wish him well also.

Got a chance to see some of OWU spring football practice yesterday. I was watching OWU play Muskiegum at Littick field and the Football team was on the practice field next to Littick. It was GO, GO, GO, all the time I was there. Not much down time for anyone. Boy did they have everyone hustling.

Former Kenyon HC, Ted Stanley lands at Weber State (say it right) and really...is home.
I wish him well there....

aueagle and Bishopleftiesdad:

Thanks for sharing all that info.  In regards to Stanley, I wish him well also. It is always neat, IMO, to see guys end up back "home", at least in their home areas, and isn't it somewhat amazing that happens more often then not. While some coaches and their families are content in staying a long way from their "roots" for their entire careers when such situations work out for them that way, it is not uncommon to see them eventually return to their home regions in the long term, such as with Stanley.  Of course, those from the eastern United States migrate back there, while the western state guys, such as John L. Smith who hired Stanley, Dennis Erikson, etc., etc., just to mention a couple, end up back in the west somewhere.  I had forgotten that Smith played at Weber State; he has come pretty much full circle.  Anyway, with Stanley being now back in his home state where his parents and in-laws still reside, that is a great situation for him and a great coaching opportunity.  I think he will do fine in his position coach job and certainly his head coaching and def. coordinator experiences will be a huge asset to him.  What a neat thing for him that the full-time coaching position opened up there for him to "go back home".

As to spring football, sounds like OWU is stepping it up.  Even though it is obviousy very early i.e. 4 months to go even before the start of pre-season camp, having concentrated conditioning sessions in spring practice, IMO, is the right way to go.  Of course, hopefully, the players will continue that on their own between now and the start of practice in August - at least those who have any "smarts" ::) ;D ;) and are the dedicated ones will do that.  At Hope, they started spring practice this week also, however, will take next week off and then resume for the final second week of spring practice.  They are "splitting" the schedule like this due to half of the staff, who are the part-time coaches, being h.s. teachers as well as their wives and so that they can take a spring vacation together during the h.s. spring breaks this week.  That is a tough situation in some respects for the coaches in that situation because, at least at Hope College, the college's spring break does not coincide in the same week with all of the h.s. and public school spring breaks anymore, like it used to years ago. At least in the last +decade, Hope changed/evolved that for some reason.  Anyway, I'm told that Hope has concentrated a lot on conditioning this week as well and while that will continue in the final week, they work more on the offensive and defensive schemes and play running.

Thanks for the info guys.  Talk to you again soon.

Best,

any buzz around that Dusty Kiel is transferring to Wabash?  Or had decided to, and changed his mind?

smedindy

Haven't heard, but he'd have to wait behind Belton for sure!  ;)

Pipe dream on Kiel, would be my guess...

I was standing by this kid's Dad at Jr.'s track meet, and he indicated his boy was heading to Witt.

He was a wide-receiver until his senior year.  His HS coach is a Mount alumn.

Oberlin reports a commitment from an All-Ohio QB

Wow- two very impressive prospects. Congrats to Oberlin- and this has got to be helpful for additional recruiting. Both in track too- speed is the game.

Pretty ballsy to post a release on D3 commitments in my opinion.  I'd never see Witt or Wabash doing this.  For one, who's to say they are locked?  There is certainly nothing binding and they could easily go elsewhere.  Maybe they will change their mind. Secondly, if a kid is that good, who's to say an NAIA or a D2 wouldn't offer them??  I know for a fact Wabash has gotten kids in the past that we have held our breath until they show up on campus for camp - knowing they may get offered (especially in the Spring, let alone in the early Summer).

Just my 2 cents.

Looks like 2 solid players although I am not sure how a distance runner translates to an impact guy on the football field :) - I'd rather have a sprinter or a hurdler...

dahlby

Agreed!

There is no binding committment until the deposit money is on the table!
Maybe "leaning" is a better word than "committed".

It's always a wait and see game between now and camp- but I don't blame Oberlin for making the announcement if the kids did express their intent. The worst that can happen if the kids change their minds is Oberlin picks up some other recruits that saw a developing program.

Although we don't associate distance running w football benefit, some of the mentally toughest people I know are distance runners. They say the long runs help clear the mind- a good thing for a QB.

Nothing is ever for certain - a late spring season injury, or even just nagging indecision.  At times, even the obvious is overlooked, uh like - no women except some profs?  ;)  Wouldn't outrightly criticize any one school for over-exuberance as it's probably happened to all at one time or another, especially over the last couple of decades, and with the "signing publicity" so popular with the high schools.

Recall a Dayton commitment a few years back?  Deposit (I assume paid  ???) and his photo (in his Wabash Class of __ T) on the incoming rhynie website into late July.  Camp time, and surprise - he turns up on the banks of the Olentangy as a Bishop.

Cave2Bens,

Not criticizing at all, was more questioning the rationale and/or the fact that it is far from "etched in stone."  If they would do the release later, it would make more sense.

By the way, sounds like there will be another Broecker in unform this Fall.  Very cool!  Bash recruiting class is shaping up nicely as have ER's past classes.

BB16,

Apologies for decided lack of language command - no direct inference to your post intended, but a generalized statement regarding entire process after perusal of news flashes on the cover which (to me) resemble NFL draft day lists.  English and rhetoric were never personal strong suits.

Point being, sans concrete overshoes or until pads strapped on and suitcases stowed, even deposits don't amount total commitment anymore.

Agreed 99.9% with your initial observation (and Dahlby's follow-up) as this gravity-challenged senior no longer comprehends impact of sprints and hurdles versus endurance training when "waddling" is a norm.  ;D

Cheers from SuidAfrika - C2B

Great to see the Albion DB get picked by the Lions.....great story on him....he has the size and speed to do well.
Ashland got a DL in too....hope some more guys get their shot in the late rounds or free agency from the D3 ranks.
