On offense it would have to be: Jake Knott.  A playmaker.

On defense I will go back to my HS days at Cville and say Craig Terril from Lebanon HS.  He went on to play for Purdue and now is a backup for the Seattle Seahawks at DT.  He was a beast.  He killed us.......well just about everyone did.

Vince McMahon

For offense, although I never went directly against him in practice (Center vs. corner is a pretty rare matchup), I'll go with a close friend of mine Bill Andrews.  Yes, I'm biased here, but I NEVER saw him get beat by anybody.  I guess in some cases a stalemate can be as bad as a loss, but we all know the importance of the big uglies up front.

On defense, I'll give the nod to the Duerricane.

KC

On defense, it was either Andy Pope or the younger Hammer.

Offensively, it would be Quinton Porter, the BC quarterback.  In the NCAC it would be Tony Sutton.  A name that I'd throw out is Neundorf (?) or whatever the Denison qb's name was from 2001.  That was my freshman year, but I remember thinking he would at least put up Knott's numbers if they switched teams.

ghostface

you older bash guys should know both of these names

offense: Terry Dickey rb

defense: Neil Ringers de (the best d lineman in NCAC ever)

Tyrell Sutton update:

Since Michigan plays Northwestern tomorrow, the Ann Arbor News had a full article on him today.  I never knew before that his favorite team growing up was ... Michigan!  He made a visit here, but got the impression the Michigan coaches were not really that high on him.

Probably the best choice for Sutton; with the wealth of RBs that UM has, I suspect Sutton would be buried deep in the depth chart and would not have gotten the game-time opportunity to show what a fantastic back he obviously is!

What wealth of running backs? When Hart who incidentally is a small, slow guy goes out, the drop off in production at the Michigan TB position is extremely noticeable.

Ghostface,

I have no idea who you are but you have to be a former teammate???  Ringers was WWWWWAAAAAYYYYYYYYY overrated bro!  If you were going off of Boonie's scouting report, I will give it to you but he was not that good!!!  He almost got as much press as Hollway's kid when he was 1st team all american at center???  Dickey was good (RB - DPU), Voris was better (QB - DPU), Werner (TE - DPU) - played with the NY Jets was probably the best, although I am going to go with Brad Lamb (WR - Anderson) that dude was a freak!  He was one of these track studs who was tough and caught everything.  I think he was something like a 24' long jumper.  I think he played a bit in the NFL (Packers) as a return guy.

Lancer - nice topic...great memories!  One more thought for OWU fans, the big fullback that weighed about 260 was pretty good too, can't recall his name - late 80's.  Man I'm old!

I think the best player I ever played against was Jeff Backus from Upper Arlington in High School.  He was Mr. Football in 00, and started at Northwestern.  He was DAMN good.!

In college, I honestly can't say.  Too many good athletes.  I would have to say the running back for Ursinus in 01.  I can't remember his name, but he was really really fast.  He was also short which made it impossible to see when he was behind his line.

I think you are right about the milage aspect, regardless of who wins.  Also, no problem on the Alma "thing" i.e.  assumed prediction ;).  I just had to give you some levity chiding on that, being I am a HOPE guy, but have connections to both!  Good luck to 'Bash tomorrow.  Dress warm ::)

frank,

Are we discussing the same Michigan team?!  If Hart is a 'small, slow guy", I guess his 1400 yards in 9 games were an hallucination?  Kevin Grady was the #1 ranked hs RB in the country last year.    Jerome Jackson (#4 on the depth chart) scored the winning TD last Saturday.  And #3 Mike Martin ain't exactly chopped liver.  Yes, 'small, slow guy' Hart is the best, but they DO have a wealth of running backs, and I'm not sure Sutton would have received the opportunity to show what a talent he is if he had gone to Michigan.

Their main problem this year is that Chad Henne is NOT the QB he was as a true freshman last year.  I'm cautiously optimistic that Henne and Hart will be the Leinart and Bush of 2006 and/or 2007, but THIS year Henne is mediocre and Hart is hurt.

BB16,

Good call on Brad Lamb.  I don't remember Ringers, but what about his teammate Keith Rucker?  He had some time in the NFL as well.

Ypsi: My eyeballs tell me that Hart is small and slow. Furthermore when he is out of the lineup, Michigan's rushing game becomes subpar bordering on the anemic. If Sutton were on the Michigan team, at worst he would be splitting time roughly equally with Hart (and with Hart out of the lineup would be getting the vast majority of the rushes) and could look forward to 3 more very productive years at Michigan, not Northwestern.

Mr. Ypsi

frank,

I think we've somehow gotten into a very silly debate - I'd LOVE it if Sutton were at Michigan, but I'm not sure he would have gotten the chance to show his talents if he were.

You can SEE Hart as small and slow all you want, but he had the #2 stats in the nation for a freshman last year.  Kevin Grady IS the real deal, once he learns to hold on to the ball!  Mike Martin is a STUD, but he too has a propensity to fumbling.  Jerome Jackson was the starter last year, 'til Hart beat him out.  I've seen his first rush (19 yards) against Iowa 4 times now - I STILL don't know how he wasn't taken down for a loss.  There WAS NO OPENING!!

I'd LOVE to have Sutton on the Wolverines, and agree that he would give Hart a run for his money as top dog - I just don't see that he would have gotten the opportunity to prove it.  Unless he was able to prove it in practice (NOT the same as game-time), I fear he would be stuck at #5 on the depth chart.

For Tyrell Sutton's sake, I'm glad he went to Northwestern (and I hope UM can totally shut him down THIS week)!

Lamb played for Buffalo - I recall him dropping a pass on Monday Night Football and Marv Levy almost ate him for dinner on the sidelines.

If Tyrell Sutton had gone to Michigan, Lloyd Carr would probably be playing him at outside linebacker... :-\
