What type of offense does Denison run?  Since their QB rushes so effectively.  Do they still spread it out like they did a few years ago?

Which players stats make them the "Defensive Player of the Year"?
(just on stats alone)

                                          |--------Tackles--------| |-Sacks-| |---Pass Def---|

                                      Solo  Ast Total   TFL/Yds   No-Yds  Int-Yds BrUp QBH        ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
         (A)                                33   36    69  15.5-57   7.0-37     3-15     3
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
         (B)                                40   37    77  17.5-64   6.0-36     1-5
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
         (C)                                49   36    85   1.0-2       .        .       .   2   2-0

There are also forces fumbles and blocked kicks not added. Also, some teams don't calculate the QBH's.

On stats alone, I'd lean toward player A.  Player A seems to be everywhere...in the backfield, in the pass coverage....a real ball hawk.  Based on the stats, I'd say A is just slightly more disruptive than the other two...but the stats are all pretty even, particularly between A and B.

The problem with Defensive POYs is that you can't always look at just the stats.  Sometimes great defensive players don't fill up the stat line because teams very purposefully run or throw away from that player or constantly double that player, etc.  Defensive POY is more of a subjective vote, I think.  Certainly the stats are great evidence of a very good player, but I think intangibles play a bigger role in selecting a Defensive POY than they do for the Offensive POY.

kcreds: I agree that defense wins championships/games; and the Bishops have had some outstanding "D" squads/players. I just don't buy into the "wing", and have communicated that since 2003. I want what you and jr want....victories that turn into championships and a shot in the playoffs. Until Coach "H" tables the offense or a more drastic change is made, the Bishop faithful will have to "wing-it." I have felt that football is not a priority at Ohio Wesleyan, and until some changes are made, having 6,7,8 wins a season, or a 3rd place finish, is going to be acceptable. As I stated in '04, I felt that change was in the air; hence the new AD. I also feel that more changes will be coming to the Bishop program, as directed by the AD. The school, current/former players, alumni & friends of OWU deserve football prominence within the NCAC & D3.

When Blair Hammer won defensive POY his stats were pedestrian - however coaches saw his importances as he was double teamed all the time.

If you're looking at players just by their stats, what position they play is a pretty important piece of information.  I didn't bother to look into what player was who, but if they don't all play linebacker that would be pretty important.  Lack of interceptions for a lineman wouldn't mean much, just like TFL's or sacks for someone in the secondary would be that much more impressive.

Player A is Pyneberg, an ILB from Wabash; Player B is Owen Case, a DE from OWU; Player C is Casey McConnell, an ILB from Kenyon.

Not to take anything away from Mr. Case, but it occurs to me that he might be getting more than usual opportunities as teams from away from his respected teammate, Mr. Clervoix.  Similarly, Mr. Pyneberg benefits from an experienced DL and an experienced partner at ILB.  Mr. McConnell has the weakest defensive supporting cast.  He probably is more important to his defense than Mr. Case and Mr. Pyneberg are to theirs.  But those are just my humble opinions.

I am sorry, but the above post should read--"as teams RUN away from."  Is there a way to edit our posts once they've been posted?  Thanks in advance for any help you give.

WARNING: WING-T POST FOLLOWS. ALL THOSE NOT INTERESTED, PLEASE SKIP AHEAD

sorry, if i could have pasted this in a few pages back i would have but have been out of touch and just read all the updates.

oldguy-your logic is ridiculous. when was the last time a team with a left footed punter went to the final four? national championship?

not many people run the wing-t (for many reasons other than its out dated). the point is that augie runs it and is a top 30 team EVERY year and usually a top 10 team offensively EVERY year. they compete for the CCIW title EVERY year. when they are able to get through a brutal CCIW schedule and get to the playoffs they face a team in Alliance, just like every other team in the north region every year the last 10 years.

btw, in 1999 augie took said wing-t to alliance against a top 5 defense in the nation and rang up 49 minutes of possession time (out of 60 remember) and 400 yds on the ground. they were a two pt conversion away from tying the score w 3 minutes left in the game. problem was they went up against the best offense in the nation and gave up 35 pts in under 12 minutes of possesion time (a 90 yd KOR was the other score in a 42-33 loss).

If my hunch plays out there is a real good chance you will get to see the wing-t this year in the playoff field and with a bit of defense and special teams, you may even get it in crawfordsville!! we can all chat then about what you think.

best of luck to a very good wabash team. I too am a big creighton/neathery fan and hope you pound those ladies in greencastle.

since the north central/augie matchup is a very relevant game for you ncac folks I believe the dreaded and too oft-discussed wing-t is the key to the game. if augie can keep the explosive ncc offense off the field and control the clock, they will win. i believe they can and will.

We see the Wing-T when OWU comes to town.

but when is the last time you say a playoff wing-t? or final four wing-t? a national championship coach wearing wing tip shoes? or a team other than purple in salem?  ;D

oldguy

usee,

My logic is fine and basic.  My whole argument was for the NEXT level...ie championship level.  Teams in the final 4 are championship caliber teams.  I want to know if there have been "championship caliber" teams who run the wing-t recently.  Simple question, simple yes or no answer.  The answer proves my argument.  My argument was never that Augie wouldn't compete.  It was that the wing-t will keep teams from the NEXT level.  Simple.

By the way, I'd be willing to bet that several final four teams in the last 10 years have had a left footed punter.
