Oldguy,

Funny you mention the arrival of the strong armed qb at OWU.  I in fact played with one named Dan Hover.  Unfortuately, he was an excellent runner too.  Hollway brought in a coach from Maryland on the heels of some great success with the passing game there, who installed that pass offense with the bishops.  We ran it very successfully, but just not enough, and the next year it was scrapped in favor of waggles because Hollway wanted Hover to have the run/pass option.  The other tragedy in the situation was that two of the receivers, Joe Buckley and Matt Apel, were as good as anyone in the conference and Apel was a DIFFERENCE MAKER of the highest order.  None of them really got to capitalize on the combination of the three, and OWU trudged to 6-4 in 1995, Hover's senior year.  Poor guy was a great sport about it, though.  He left it all on the field every week

TU,

I think I was at the Witt-OWU games in 1994 and 1995.  Both amazing games.  If memory serves me right, I believe 1994 was a last second TD pass for Witt in Springfield, and 1995 was a last second FG for Witt in wet conditions in Delaware.  If I am wrong please correct me.

Two great games.  I don't really remember what style of offense you guys ran then, but I remember the Wing-t was at least back in 1997.

I had forgotten about those games, thanks for giving me the chance to remember them.  They were on the cusp of the transfer of power in the conference from Allegheny to Witt.  Crazy how a couple of games here and there could have changed things.

"oldguy"  you are right about the 94 and 95 Witt/Wesleyan games......in 94 Ken Magateaux hit Eugene Hardin with the game winning pass with around :30 left, 21-17. The '95 game was won by a Jimmy Watts fg 15-13. That was the year Witt finished 10-0 and went to the playoffs, losing at Wheaton in the 1st round. Allegheny beat the Tigers in '96, but after that, Wittenberg won 97 through '02 vs the Gators

kcreds,
Do the kids at your son's school like the T? Hope that's not too personal. And is Sir Louis still hurt or has the new qb beaten him out?
Will you be at the Wooster game?

How do you spell portapotties?

Didn't know if you were coaching this Saturday?  See you then.  As always.

I see you have been doing the local weather here in Dayton, would you rather be doing TV or radio?  Keep up the good work.

BashDad:
Looks like your "other favorite" team (Adrian) along with mine have put themselves "out of the running."  Anyway, good luck to your other team this weekend.  It's coming down to the stretch.  I hope the weather is good again this weekend.  Later friend.

Oldguy,

Both of those final Witt drives in '94 and '95 were pure torture if you were on the other side of the ball, but I'm sure incredible to watch as a fan.  In '95 (that game was ten years ago?) it was overcast but not wet.  For as well as OWU played that day, I remember the passing stats being something purely horrid like 2-7, 2 yards.

TU,

Remember though in '95 there were a variety of factors that brought about the very disappointing 6-4 record:  Apel getting caught from behind on a punt return in week 1 against John Carroll, severely twisting his ankle and never being the same, in fact I believe having 0 yards receiving the next week at Wooster; Hover - for as great an athlete/guy he was - not being able to step up as the leader of the offense and thinking that he had to break it open on every single play; and by far the biggest problem - no leadership whatsoever from the seniors that created an at-best tepid atmosphere and little team chemistry.

nice discussion about the wing-t. i think owu's team on 2001 isn't the best test case though. that offense was stacked. their qb was probably the best owu has had in years, they had two great receivers, capone, a good offensive line, etc. however, i think their downfall was their defense. in my opinion, that was the worst defense they've had since i've followed the NCAC. wooster wasn't exactly an offensive juggernaut that year, but we moved the ball all day against owu, something that didn't happen at all against wabash, witt or gheny. so what i'm trying to say is that IF owu had their traditional tough defense that year, i think they would have run the table. that being said, wally consistently makes the good point that ANY offense with a bunch of talented players will be successful, and that makes a lot of sense.

by the way, darkside is right...that hail mary was caught, and the receiver tackled at the 1...i think darkside and lancer would agree that as defensive players, from the sideline it looked like he'd scored. we all started going nuts, and next thing we knew owu's players had stormed the field. definitely a back-breaker like lancer said.

Capone said that game was hands down the best he had ever played in.

Wabco, this is a bit late, but get it through your head Kenyon not playing Bash or Witt this year or last year has nothing to do with them "threatening" to back out of a game.  That happened 4 seasons ago, and they didn't *threaten* anything, they straight out refused to play them.  Utterly embarrassing move made by the AD and not at all supported by the football team or staff.  Players on the team actually wrote letters to Fincham and Creighton apologizing for the AD's decision.  Get over it.

After reading about the last ten pages, I want to make a few comments.

Pat, I don't see how preventing "rookies" from editing their posts improves the site.  After all, it would have been easier to make my post more readable than to put the correction in another post.

Also, I think people should lay off criticizing the young man from Kenyon.  He stumbled onto this site a couple years ago while making his college choice.  He never really said anything provocative.  But he has endured nothing but denigration and abuse--especially from the Wabash fans--merely for having the temerity to post here.  That he remains at Kenyon and is still on their roster speaks well for him.  He really did go there for the education and to be part of their team.  I applaud him for that.  Now, Pat, since you protect the posters here from the editings of rookies, perhaps you can see your way clear to protect the young Kenyon man from the slings and arrows of the veterans.  Fair enough?

wally_wabash

I think you misread most of the stuff posted about Ben.  There isn't nearly as much vitriol as you are reading....there are some of us who are interested in both in his progress and the progress of the program, especially since we get positively no Kenyon posters.

And leave your broad brush at home....there are plenty of Wabash posters here who haven't said word one about our friend at Kenyon.

As it pertains to OWU/Witt '94,

I remember standing right there next to another poster on this board in jubilation when OWU hit that field goal to go up on Witt in 94, and then about 5 minutes later I don't think I ever felt greater pain as I did when Witt went back on top.    That really was the best game I think I've ever witnessed, as it was clean and guys on both teams made huge plays over and over again.  Win or lose, those are the types of days that make the sport worth playing/watching.

Yes, the bishops were running the wing t back then.
