We've discussed the targeting rule a bit on these boards - for an excellent example of why it's troubling to eject players on bang bang plays, see this play from the second quarter of the Alabama vs. Texas A & M game.  Alabama safety was ejected on a bang bang play in which that WAS head to head contact but I've seen the replay five times and NEVER ONCE thought it looked like a dirty play. Guy tried to make a play on the ball.

Overturned by replay and he's allowed back in the game. Thank goodness.

Exactly. But we don't get a replay in D3. That's been my concern on this thing from the jump.

Quick assessment:  Wabash was just too powerful today.  If Britt had played for Hanover I could imagine a Slightly Different Outcome.  Maybe Wabash would not have grabbed six interceptions.   But that is academic.   What did we learn?  Defense is terrific; today maybe better than anticipated, but with inferior QBing from Hanover.  Of course, the D was at least partly responsible for that poor QB play--and having a freshman start v. that D is certain for disaster.  Offensively, Wabash had many short fields, a harbinger of things to come throughour the year.  QB was efficient.  Holmes is going to be hard to stop.  Passing game shows promise.  I don't think we saw enough today to really know how the Wabash O will turn out, but they took advantage of every opportunity.
Lastly, a big shout out to C.P. Porter.  After he was injured last year, a physician told me it was as bad as any injury he had ever seen on the football field, everyone thought career ending.   He came in as the fourth running back and produced a scintilling effort, including the TD.  He is reason to continue to believe that football produces special individuals, or that special individuals play football.  I will try to remember his effort today when in the future I read how some players have let down their teams and communities.

Kenyon is down 3. They've got the ball at their own 5 and 4:38 to go. You can't know the mettle of your team until you've stared down the Earlham Quakers and a double digit 4th quarter deficit. Let's see what these Lords are made of.

Fumble on the first snap. Quaker ball.

Touchdown Quakers. 25-15 and you can put this one to bed.  THAT is as nauseating a result as we're going to see in the league this year. Can't happen, Kenyon. Can not happen.

First play after Kenyon fumble...Earlham pressured on pass, QB "grounds" the ball backwards.  Official says "the direction of the pass is immaterial. It's grounding. Loss of down"  Last time I checked a pass backwards is a lateral.  Kenyon should have had ball.  Instead--20 yard touchdown pass on next play.  Anyone care to explain how a pass  backwards is not a lateral?

Did Kenyon pick up the ball or did the thing go out of bounds?

Kenyon "recovered" the ball is what I saw on the video, but it's not great video.  The Kenyon coach was beside himself.  And just hearing the official say that the direction of the pass is immaterial is comical in the least.

While you'd like to think a decent team beats earlham handily enough that the refs don't matter, from your description it does sound like they got screwed on that call.

It's probably worth noting that by this point in their game last week, Wittenberg was done. Franklin leads 14-0.

Just think:  Kenyon was a season finale win over Denison last year from getting the conference AQ.

I double dog dare Mason Espinosa to throw 60 times on this defense on 10/12.  Try it.
