Lafayette newspaper today had an article about the Big 10 pre-season meetings.  During his remarks as part of an interview Purdue head coach Hazel was asked about the Boilers kicking game.  He spent quite a lot of time commenting on Ian MacDougall, "a transfer from Wabash College," noting that Ian was 15-17 on FGs last year, with a long of 45.  He mentioned Ian's "big leg," noted that they had watched a lot of film on him,  and said he was definitely in the mix to kick this year.  The reason MacDougall is on the Purdue roster is that he is enrolled in graduate school in West Lafayette.  He has a year of collegiate football eligibility remaining because he played soccer his freshman year at Wabash.  He was the starting goalie his first year, then decided he wanted to play football.  He had kicked and played soccer in high school.  Ian walked into a tryout some time back, and the Purdue coaches offered him a chance.  Stay tuned . . .

That is awesome!! Way to go Ian and wishing you the best! How cool would that be to see Ian kicking in the Big Ten.

Pep is finishing up his visit in Bicknell, IN and headed north to West Lafayette via US 231 with stops planned at DePauw and Wabash to check out the facilities. Anything else a "must-see" for a D3 football fan?

Definitely get a first hand look at the Monon Bell that you may have heard about once or twice.  Current address:

Looking at the rivalry I noticed 6 ties since the bell was added to the mix.  Does the team who had the bell keep it?  How is that handled.

It looks like a cool and classic rivalry.  WHITEWATER and Platteville play each year for a miner's pick but it's relatively new compared to the bell.

Yes, when there were ties the team who entered the game with the Bell retained it. The last was in 1992, the 99th game.

Really cool. Gonna have to keep an eye on the Boilers this year.

Excellent question.  The Monon Bell entered the series in 1932 and that year's game was a scoreless tie.  Nobody got the Bell in 1932...it stayed hidden for another year.  After that, the agreement was that in the event of a tie, both schools would get some time with the Bell (six months apiece), but at some point that rule was changed and the school with the Bell got to keep the Bell in case of a tie.  I'm not sure exactly when that change was made...that's going to take some efforting.

The same situation worked out pretty well for Steven Hauschka a few years ago. After graduating from Middlebury he still had a year of eligibility left, so he kicked for one season as a graduate student at NC State. After a couple of tryouts he was able to stick in the NFL, and last season won a Super Bowl ring with the Seahawks.
So best of luck to Mr. MacDougall; you never can tell what might happen.

Looking forward to September 6th. Hope the game is worthy and the best team wins. Now for the important stuff, tell me about the tailgating, how, where, when, restrictions, etc. Often times I don't make it out of the tailgate area so this is important to me !!!

I'm sure others will chip in.  In general, tailgaiting is just to the south of the stadium, with the parking lots there
filling up quickly the night before and the morning of a game.  There are no restrictions, just stake out a reasonable amount of space, first come/first served.  The atmosphere is friendly, and there are frequently fans of the visiting team mixed in with the Wabash fans.  A good time for all.  Alcohol is permitted at the tailgate parties.
The first home game of the season is usually Community Day (don't know that for this year).  If it is indeed Community Day, no admission will be charged.  Otherwise, tickets can be purchased at the gate.  The visiting team's bench is on the north side of the stadium, and visiting fans usually sit in the ample grandstand directly behind the bench--though there are no restrictions on seating.  Hollett LIttle Giant Stadium holds about 5000; expect a better than average crowd for HSC.  Wabash home attendance is among the best in DIII, even without the Monon Bell Game, which at Wabash can be as many as 11,500 or so if both teams are having good seasons.  Wabash builds out the stadium with extra stands for the Bell Game to form a virtual "bowl" with a capacity of around 11,000+.

I'll reply with the official word.... the September 6 game versus Hampden-Sydney will be Senior Day (something new Coach Raeburn did last year by moving the event from the last non-Bell home game to the first). Tickets will be the normal price ($5 for adults, $3 for students and children). Community Day will be later in the season (probably the Wooster game) with the Youth Clinic to be the Friday prior to Community Day. More details to come on the Wabash sports site in the coming days.

Pep, in his travels from Bicknell and up US 231, paid a visit to the DePauw campus and visited Blackstock Stadium, taking a few photos, then, wearing his rare black basketball jersey with purple and gold lettering together with a purple AU Football cap, stopped  off in Crawfordsville and took a walk around the track at Little Giant Stadium, took some pictures from atop the grandstand, then walked around the Allen Athletics Center (nice!) and, in the lobby, watched highlights of the 2013 Monon Bell game. Saw that the Little Giants got their 500th football win 1884 to 1997 (that's what the banner said that was hanging in the gym).

Thanks to Bicknell Bulldog/Purdue Boilermaker/legendary Alfred Football Coach Alex Yunevich, Alfred University is approaching its 500th football win, with the Saxons getting their start at America's college game in 1895. From 1895-1936, Alfred's record was an abysmal 89-140-28. Yunie coached 36 seasons from 1937 through 1976 and finished with a record at AU of 177-85-12. Since Yunie, Alfred has maintained a winning edge first with Sam Sanders (49-27-2), then Jim Moretti (70-57-3), and the now departed Dave Murray (108-60), for an overall record of 493-369-45 in 115 seasons. And 2014 marks the beginning of the Bob Rankl Era.

Today Pep is in West Lafayette looking into Yunie's playing career at Purdue...and would like to ask the Indiana posters a question (this likely has already been addressed on these boards, but Pep spends most of his time in the East Region).....what is the source of "HOOSIERS"?

500th win story time!  Homecoming 1997 vs. Rose Hulman.  Now, two weeks prior, the Little Giants had traveled up north to Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium and knocked off a pretty menacing Albion Britons squad.  In 1997, beating Albion was a pretty big deal.  The following week, Wabash dropped a heartbreaker 14-13 to Hope (who would also later beat Albion that year and win a share of the MIAA title)...Hope's (still) all-time leading rusher Brandon Graham was the difference.  That kid was good...like, he was THE flying Dutchman.  Now it's homecoming and RHIT is in town and they aren't very good.  Wabash methodically dismantles the Engineers, we all have a good chuckle at the homecoming queen parade, and then things get very awkward, very quickly.  On consecutive snaps in the fourth quarter (possibly third quarter...I'm not 100% certain on that...I do know it was later in the game and the game result wasn't really in question at this juncture) Wabash's senior QB and top WR (also a senior...both guys were captains I'm sure) blow out knees.  And the wind went out of everybody's sails.  It was bittersweet.  But fortunately, 12 years later, Wabash wailed on Allegheny 37-3 to hit the 600 win milestone.  Wes Chamblee returned a punt for a score and Hudson went bonkers.  Much better times.

Thanks to those of you who responded to my question.  I just think these rivalry games played for a trophy of some sort are pretty interesting and I appreciate learning about the bell.
