In rankings watch, Salisbury beat SJF in OT. It probably will knock SJF down a little, not much, but a little.

Play calling predictable and execution poor!
Once again Wabash and Wittenberg!

Wabash into the wind in the 4th quarter.  Wooster should load the box and make us throw into the wind if they want a chance to win.  But, Barnes has no time to throw the ball.  I don't think Wooster will have + yards passing after this game.

Wabash and Witt! Again.
Is Wooster that bad today or Wabash that good?  Where is Wabash Witt game played this year?

Wabash Hokie

IMHO Wabash is that good.  When the LGs are on, they are tough to beat.  The Witt game is at Witt this year - 11/8.

Not an exciting game, but Wooster could not do anything right, even when given opportunities.   Wabash not as explosive as in the past, but keeps pounding away on both sides of the ball.  Barnes could not do anything. Would have liked to have seen more outside running from him and running back first half.  Terrible execution!  Really thought Wooster would make a real game of it this year.
Enjoyed announcers critiquing the refs.
Well, after bringing home dinner tonight will ask wife if she is up for road trip to Springfield this year.  Have not done that for a while and even she likes Witt's stadium.  Should be a terrific game.

DePauw offense not having an A day - Tigers lead Denison 27-9 in 4th

Back from Hollett.  The game felt more like a 42-6.  Woo started running up the middle on Bash and it continued.  They pounded the A gap over and over.  The Scots had 2 drives that stood out.  Having said that, the Bash D played well.  The fake punt hurt and the hook and ladder stung super late.

Barnes was 6 for 22 for 48 yards.  Business trip = bad

Hoping the SJF loss puts Bash in the top 10.

Zurek ripped.

Quality team win for Wabash

It's business time!

Agree with BB16 there that the game didn't really feel all that close.  Noticed smed mentioned the 2012 Allegheny situation, but I never got the feel that Wabash was off to the point where Wooster could steal it.  Wabash had trouble getting the Gators off the field in that game...a lot of long drives with 3rd and short conversions.  No such thing today.  Wooster was rarely in short third downs and their third down conversion percentage had to have been awful.

There's really not a lot of variety in that offense for Wooster.  But how can there be when you're snapping every 10 seconds?  Seriously, how many plays can you really have loaded up when your goal is obviously to just snap as fast as humanly possible?  If the four plays you have in that tempo package don't work, it's going to be a rough day.

Barnes was just 6-22 with 48 yards, but hey- he finally got his touchdown pass against the Little Giants.  With a hook and ladder with 12 seconds left.  Who runs that play in that spot?  I don't understand it.  Why not save that for later against Witt when you might actually be in a game and you might actually get something meaningful out of it.  I digress.  One that that we didn't mention in the lead up (I blame my memory on that one) is that Wooster's receivers drop a LOT of balls.  They dropped a bunch today, including at least a few that would have converted third downs and kept drives going.  The whole Wooster-dropping-passes thing isn't new.  It's been a problem there for as long as Barnes has been taking snaps.  His line isn't all on drops- he definitely made some really poor throws today, but he isn't getting a lot of help from his receivers when he does put the ball on them.

Wabash's offense was kind of up and down today.  After being told that Wooster had zero quarterback sacks on the year, they promptly came out and sacked Putko on the second play of the game.  Wabash used field position thanks to the wind in the first quarter to get a lead, had a sublime second quarter offensively, then just kind of tread water until Holmes and Zurek started taking huge chunks on a couple of drives in the fourth.  Hopefully we'll see some more consistency there over the next month.

One last funny thing about that hook and ladder play...it produced one of the strangest stat lines you'll ever see:
Darrien Owens - 0 Rec, 17 yards, 1 TD.

I agree with BB16 that today was a solid win for Wabash.  Unfortunately, the officials for the game were an incompetent bunch!   What in the world is a "do over"?  On another play, a player tackles an opponent 3 to 4 yards out of bounds, the player doing the tackling injuries himself and doesn't get flagged because the idiot ref feels bad for him.  This kind of call might be appropriate in pee wee football, but has not place at the college level.

Inadvertent whistle...that garbage cost Wabash a game at Witt several years ago.  2006 I believe.  Wabash had the lead late in the fourth quarter, had stopped Witt on a 4th and 1 (forced a fumble as I recall) but then out of nowhere "inadvertent whistle".  Witt got to run the play again, converted, and went down and scored the go ahead touchdown.  The difference today was that I actually heard the whistle.  I thought Barnes had maybe stepped out while he was scrambling around over there on the far sideline.  I didn't hear a whistle at that Witt game- and I was closer to the play then than I was to the play in question today.

Trying to put some perspective on the Wabash/Wooster game today.

Trying conditions:  windy and cold, definitely affected play,
Wabash's longest pass, 21 yd TD.  Woo's longest, 23 yd. TD, hook and ladder with 12 sec. remaining in 4th qtr.
Wabash rushed for 10 or more yds 12X, with a long of 22.  Wooster rushed for 10 yds or more 8x, long of 46 on a
fake FG, and 45 on A Barnes carry.  Woo was impressive running the ball in the 2nd half against a very strong
Wabash defense.  On the other hand, I never thought Woo was seriously interested in getting back into the
game after Wabash led 28-3 at the half.  Perhaps they knew that they could not throw the ball effectively.

Barnes was 6-22 passing (!) for 48 yds. (!) and was sacked 7X.  Putko was 15-22 for 121 yds. and 3TDs.  Sacked
               3X
Rushing:  Wabash 243 yds.  Wooster 233 yds. (!).
Wabash 41.7  yds. per punt.  Wooster 29.1.

To put some historic perspective on all this.  Over the past 5 years, all Wabash wins, the scores have been 35-16 (today), 48-14 (2013), 30-0 (2012), 19-7 (2011), 21-17 (2010), and 44-10 (2010).  And going back 5 more years:  37-27, 45-24, 21-10, 20-10, and 44-10.  All in all, over 10 years, including this year,  when Wabash has not lost more than 2 games in a season and Wooster has been 51-43 (including today), Woo has been reasonably competitive just as often as not.
All this is to say, that despite some doubt from some Wabash fans, today was a solid win, 19 pts, over an opponent whom Wabash has defeated by a bigger margin half the time over the past 10 years even though the teams' records have diverged widely.  Wooster has more often that not played Wabash reasonably tough.
The LGs also covered Wally's spread of 17.5.  Good job,Wally.  Very close to the result today.
