I did just a little bit of nosing around through non-profit tax return databases today and found that Larry Kehres made $159,000 in 2012, his last year as head coach. However, keep in mind he was/is also the athletic director.

By the way, it appears Dean Paul made $84,000 that year. It seems he is a relative of a member of the board of trustees and the school is obliged to report payments to him even if he's not among the highest-paid employees.

I was more intrigued that LK is in a 457(f) deferred comp plan.  They're deferring $25k per year. I'd love to know how common that is for HC's in D3, but my hunch is not very.

For the time, effort & commitment that Div. III coaches (HC & Assistants) put in.....  I already had a ton of respect for them regardless of salary level.   Having run into a few things on and off line since this topic came up on this board.... and realizing the true reality about what they actually get paid,  my respect has gone up significantly.

You're welcome.  For the record, I don't think D3 coaches get paid enough.  But you probably figured that out.  vbg

If I recall, head coaches at Wabash are considered faculty members and professors. I remember seeing "Associated Rank of Associate Professor" on some titles in the catalog. Would they also be part of the professorial salary scale?

Smed, the answer to your good question is NO.

For what it's worth...many years ago...when Frank Navarro left Wabash, he recommended to the Wabash administration that they hire Stan Parrish as the next head coach.  But the Wabash administration still followed through with a national search with Parrish and either 2 or 3 other coaches selected to interview and meet with the team in an informal meeting in the Little Giant Room. My personal preference after meeting with all of the candidates was still Coach Parrish.  I would have to believe if BJ stays and is either recommended by ER or just steps up and expresses interest in the head coaching job that Joe Haklin and the administration will still seek outside candidates.  That is just the way the hiring process takes place at the collegiate level for the most part for any vacancy whether it's administration, teaching or coaching.  When big money, alumni pressure and TV revenue is involved then, yes, it may be a sure thing to go ahead and promote an assistant without the time needed to conduct a search.  Another thing to remember or take into account is that once the search begins there will be quality coaches already prepared to apply before the job opens.  I believe this happened with a previous coaching vacancy at Wabash...the timeframe for accepting applications was very short due to overwhelming response.  Would love to see BJ get the job if ER leaves...I have always been more of a defensive minded football guy...like the defensive philosophy and coaching of BJ's teams...but still would hope that ER is still coach here next year.

The low end of D3 head jobs is approximately 50k. It goes up from there. My sense is that the vast majority of D3 head coaches make between 60-70k.

Do we think that another factor that is a part of the consideration of the UWW selection committee is:   How long do they project each candidate staying with the school IF the program continues the success it has seen in the past 8 years?

The internal candidate may have a tendency to stay longer....than the external candidate that is looking to continue to advance to a higher level.  Which in this case would be a higher NCAA division.

Thoughts?

I don't think most guys take D3 jobs with their eyes on higher levels. Guys that want that tend to go a different path.  I don't think UWW worries about people moving on.  And there's no going up from there within D3 anyway.

I believe that is true for the majority (I assume you are talking about those who are vying for the head coaching positions), although there is always those occasional situations.  Those who desire eventually moving on to the higher levels are usually more of the assistant coaches.  Gaining valuable experience as a coordinator at the DIII level (or DII) is almost always a prerequisite for getting one's foot in the door as an assistant in DI (even if it ends up starting out in a GA position). Of course, it also always helps with regard to "who you know", although I guess we could safely say that applies to almost any profession today.

Still "ouch"! ::) :P  One had better have some scholarship grants for the Post-Graduate degree program they are in while coaching there (or some $ from mom/dad)...although that is probably less likely as the only two PG degree programs listed for Marietta on their website is for Masters in Science for Physician Assistant and Masters in Art for Psychology.  A tough/tight situation for sure.  Still, the $12,000 listed is better than the $10,000 listing for essentially the same position at one of the eastern DIII schools a couple of years ago ;) ::), perhaps Hamilton or something like that-I don't recall the exact school.

Yikes. Those are some dedicated folks out there.

Adjusted for inflation that is about what I got paid at the internship I had in law school which required no more than 20 hours per week of attendance and at most half that of actual work. And that work was doing research, indoors of course.

You would almost have to find a foster family to put you up rent-free.  I assume the on-road recruiting would allow for an expense account (or tag along with someone with an expense account!).

A few of us had dinner with Coach Raeburn tonight. He is a very engaging, authentic, and sincere guy. It is obvious he is a really good man. Easy to see why you guys are glad he's your coach.
