Indeed.  I had also intended to mention that when I discussed about having a national search, however, inadvertently didn't-hadn't gone back to proof-read my post.  At any rate, that is essentially no different than for most businesses, organizations, hospitals, etc., that are required by law to post an employment opening for both "in-house" and "outside".  I also do not believe/would find it hard to believe that UWW administrators were "just going through the process" for the finalists.  I do not doubt they were serious and gave each candidate a sincere full in-depth look in the interview process.  I also do not think they wouldn't have offered second interviews to anyone if they weren't really serious about continuing them as a candidate. JMHO.

Thank you formerd3db,
I think it needs to be stressed here that the interview process was completely legitimate. The Search and Screen Committee sifted through a ton of applications and narrowed the field to a manageable number to conduct telephone interviews. After the telephone interviews, the field was narrowed to five Finalists. Soon, the Head Coach will be named.

There are a whole lot of people who put in a ton of hours on this process including AD Amy Edmunds, Coach Berezowitz, the Search and Screen Committee, and the Stakeholders.  Time was also arranged for each candidate to tour the campus, meet with the Chancellor (I know that was on the agenda, whether he was on campus for each candidate I can't confirm. I know it was on the agenda for Coach Raeburn as of the night before), meet with the strength and conditioning staff, meet with players, meet with coaches, and the Open Forum.  This was a lot of time and hard work by a lot of people.  And this is on top of real lives and the responsibilities of their full time jobs.  I have heard back from candidates and it was a great experience for them.  Regardless of how this officially turns out, I can assure you the process was legit.  In no way was this going through the motions.   I saw the hard work first hand and just wanted to acknowledge and affirm it. It would be a real disservice to a lot of people to infer or imply otherwise.

I'm more suspicious about private schools hiring in house with no search than a public conducting a search like this...

Absolutely no reflection on UWW's process here.  After several decades in and around federal agencies, Smed, I won't bet anything too valuable on your premise.  "Do as we say - not as we do" is far more prevalent than many imagine...  :-X for a couple more years.  ;)

Sometimes by promoting from within teams miss the better coach. I see it in baseball all the time - "keep it in the family" and then depression sets in.

I have to agree. Many Baseball coaches at almost any level have some previous connection with the program. For some reason I think Baseball has that as a higher priority than many sports. Now this may not be true of a consistently bad program.

Final Thoughts on All of This:

If you think about it globally -

One could say,  Bullis was the "Safe" choice here for the committee to make.   Only time will tell if it was the "Right" choice.

You have a program that has won 5 of the last 6 National Championships.....  (wow... just typing that was impressive)   How can a new coach improve on that?   Answer:  They can't...  well maybe 6 of the next 6....  They can only keep it going.

So the committee  had a decision to make.   Go with the internal candidate that has been in the program for all of those championships; is known as a good coach/person, loved by the players, fans and administration OR....... bring in a quality outsider.

POINT:   If the internal guy "safe pick" lays an egg and the program falls back a bit, I believe the committee is much more "covered"  than if they had overlooked the "popular pick" and brought in the outsider.

Another Silver lining to all of this for UWW is Stability.   If the program continues it's amazing success,  I believe Bullis stays longer.    If ER would have been offered the job, I believe after his 1st or 2nd championship at UWW, (easier said than done)   he would have moved on to a coordinator or head coaching position at a higher level.   (See: Chris Creighton)  ER is a young and very talented coach that has bigger things in his future.    I personally have always looked at career moves in terms of:   Can I affect enough change and/or is it an opportunity I can win at?   While all/most of us on this board realize that keeping a collegiate sports program at the top is, in itself, an extreme challenge,  to the casual fan/alumnus or supporter, it is much more of an expectation.  the UWW job has a fair amount of potential downside, with very little room to improve or take the program to a higher level.

Kehres at Mount Union?   While still wildly supported by Mount Fans, players. etc.  They have been on the short end of the National Championship game 5 of the last 6 years.  If this continues within the Mount program,  when does pressure begin to Mount?  ;) or does it ever? Getting to the game is still an exceptional achievement.

Bottom Line...  The hire makes sense to me.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

Raeburn isn't going to stay forever. Maybe others know if Creighton ever got nibbles or bites to move before he leapt.

I mean, I'd LOVE him to stay forever, but with ER's talent, he's got to land a job outside of the bright lights and big cornfields of Montgomery County.

I happen to agree with this.  We won't know for a while if it was the "right" choice but it's a much more difficult sell to bring in an outsider.  Bullis, one suspects, will be embraced by the fans, players, etc from Day 1.  A quality outsider might be liked by many/most fans and players, but will always hear at least a couple of man, he ain't Lance, we should have kept it in the family whispers.
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

Jim? No, but I'd love to have a beer with him!  ;)

For the record, any inference that I was somehow "ranting" is misguided. No one attacked the process that I saw. I was just letting you know it was legit.

Have a great off-season. I hope we play against you again next year.  ;)

I'm pretty sure you have all the younger posters scratching their heads at this one Bleed.
+1 from me, though, for a fun reminder.  :)
