Knew someone who had played there in the 80's, Robert Fraiser (sp?), who I believe later went on to coach in the NFL

Hey gents

It's the off-season so I don't feel so horrible asking this question.  Wife is looking into a pretty decent job opportunity in Ft. Wayne.  I know there are plenty of knowledgeable Indiana folks in here.  Wondering if I can get an informed opinion on the Ft. Wayne area.  We are looking for reasons/excuses to return to the midwest and trying to investigate whether or not this would be a good place to relocate the family.  I did the logical first step and looked up the driving distance from Ft. Wayne to Ada.  I like that part of the equation so far.

They actually have seasons in Indiana so that could be a plus.  And you're alot less likely to run into trouble from the Mexican Cartels in Fort Wayne.  Thats all I've got for you.  Good luck with your decision.

While I am in Indianapolis, I would be glad to share my perspective. Fort Wayne is a nice, mid-size Midwestern community. Generally still a manufacturing economy with agriculture and some service sector jobs. It is a strongly Republican area of the state, for what that is worth to you. You will get all four seasons. It is near a fair number of lakes and has a river, so some boating and fishing is accessible. Generally good schools, both public and private. It is its own media market as well.

They have minor league baseball in a nice downtown stadium. It also has minor league hockey and basketball. IUPUFW is a Division I sports school. It has strong high school football and soccer teams. They do have a concert scene (second tier acts) and some professional theater.

Don't know if this helps. Of course, since this is a message board, there may be other opinions.  :)  If you have any other questions, feel free to message me.

That was actually just the kind of stuff I was looking for.  I mean I can look some stuff up but I just wanted perspective from someone not living 2000 miles away like me.  I am thinking it's not that different from what I remember growing up in Dayton, OH.

I'm less familiar with FW than some on here, but have spent some time there.  I'd concur with what others have said.  I've also spent a little time in Dayton, and my impression would be that your comparison is apt.  And certainly, FW housing seems downright cheap compared to much of SE Michigan!)

I'll echo the Dayton comparison.  The other one I was going to say was Akron, but I figured Dayton was more familiar to you, RC.  I had a friend live in FW for years and it seemed like a decent place to me.  Like any decent sized city there are nice areas and not-so-nice areas I'm sure.  The parts I saw were pretty nice though.  And the cost of living is pretty cheap which is a bonus.

Dayton was a great town to grow up in in the 60's and 70's. I grew up in Kettering and remember it fondly. Also remember the Fort Wayne hockey team was a big rival at the time of the Dayton Gems. Something tells me Fort Wayne is a pretty good place to live.

Hey Ohio, I was in Centerville about that same time frame. Da worked at NCR and  moved us up to Columbus about the time NCR was having trouble. I rememer Dayton fondly.

My Dad briefly played goalie for the Gems organization before I was born.  I come back pretty regularly and I miss Dayton but moving away has illustrated how much the city has deteriorated.  I think it's easier to see because of my distance.  The factory my dad worked in for 30 years is now an empty field.  My grade school doesn't exist any more.  My neighborhood is not the same as it was when I grew up.  I know there are great parts of Dayton but I see the changes and it saddens me.  I'll be back in town the first of June and will visit all the places I have memories and see how things have changed once again.

When did he play for the gems. I remember going to hara arena to watch their games from about 66-74, not to mention closed circuit fights in the old barn. What neighborhood were you from. Kettering has changed a lot also. All the boomers moved out and really changed the place.
