I wasn't being sarcastic there...that was a genuine question.  I wasn't sure if it was a scholarship thing or a revenue thing (D-I hoops pays for most of NCAA's championships).  I was genuinely curious as to what the difference is if a school competes at different levels in different sports.

What stops Hopkins from giving a kid a lax scholarship and having him play football?

I'm guessing it is the very real possibility that he was REALLY recruited as a football player, and JH can afford to have him ride the bench in LAX.  (OR even if he is a legitimate LAX player, if he is d1 in LAX, why should he get a free-ride in d3 fball?)

I AM still curious about my scenario #2 (NON-scholarship player on a d1 team being eligible for a d3 sport) - I think it is a travesty that the skiing gold-medalist in the Olympics was ruled ineligible for d1 fball due to his (CLEARLY) skiing-related endorsements.  No SANE human being would think he was receiving money because of his role as a Colorado receiver!  (What?  He's a WR for UC?  That's OBVIOUSLY why they signed him to sell ski-poles!!)

I think LAX at Hopkins is hardcore enough that that will never happen. Same with the hockey D-1 schools like Colorado College.

I guess the question is how is it less likely that will happen with LAX/football than it is with hoops/football? I don't know that it is. But I imagine there's a reason.

Well, I did just SAY that someone on scholarship at a school with a D-I sport cannot play any of its D-III sports.

I believe you CAN ski in the Olympics and play college football.  What you CANNOT do is accept commercial endorsements to pay for your Olympic skiing and still remain eligible for "amateur" college football.   I think it's a silly distinction made by the NCAA, but one they made nonetheless.

DarkSide-D

I believe Union's hockey program is D1, while its football team is D3.

DadofBashWarrior..

This is my first post here at D3. I have been following D3 since 2001. I had a son at Bethel College. I now have a son at Wabash. I would like to weigh in my thoughts on the Capital Wabash game tomorrow.
So far this season I have seen the following games.

Wabash Red-White
Wabash-Wheaton Pre-Season
Wabash-Oberlin
Wabash-Denison
Wabash-DePauw

North Central-Wheaton
North Central-Cathage
North Central Capital

I have also been to 5 Wabash JV games...(my son is a freshman)

First of all the Capital- North Central game was not won by Capital....it was a game lost by NC. Kniss from NC was clearly not having an even ordinary day. He completed 2 passes that were inches out of the endzone and Thorne I am sure is regreting not kicking the field goal (with the wind) when it was 4th and short. Five turnovers by Cap.........

This was the ugliest "Win" I have seen in football....ever....and I mean ever...

I believe Wabash clearly dodged a bullet by not playing NC.

Wabash 17 Capital 10

I believe DePauw's Defense was better than what I saw from Cap

Reviewing the various "pick-em" boards still active during this playoff time, I find only tentative love out there for the Wabash L'il Giants in tomorrow's match-up with Capital. Now is the time for us to break the upper-level OAC hex on the NCAC and to gain some respect for the quality of football played in the NCAC.  Capital is at our place, the weather will be decent, Wabash is on a roll, and we match-up well against the Crusaders.  We have long known that we would have to go through the OAC to get back to the Stagg--how long will we have to wait for this kind of opportunity to come again?  I am sure that C.C. and his staff will have the L'il Giants ready for tomorrow.  Hopefully, many others dressed in red and white will bundle up and join the effort to continue finishing the "unfinished business."  Should be a great game--I can't wait!

Go, L'il Giants!

DadofBashWarrior,

I too have been reading this site daily for a number of years without posting.

While I appretiate the insights on Capitol v Wabash, it is always dangerous to compare teams through mutual opponents.  For example, My freshman year at Bash we beat Rhodes by a sizeable margain in our week 1.  Rhodes beat or played Depauw extremely close in thier week 1.  In our week 10, bash was 9-0 hosting depauw.  Easy victory, right?  Wrong.  Score Depauw more than I would like to type, Wabash 7.  My point is while mutual opponets can give some indication of two teams relative strengths, often times they prove fruitless.  Another point is that I really enjoy reading my own type.

Pat is referring to the so-called "Dayton Rule" and the recent rulings by the NCAA last year, right?.

meat1589-the only flaw in your logic is that you compared a week 1 team w a week 9 team. there is a pretty big difference in my opinion with teams in week 9ff than in week 1-2. that's why i don't have  a great feel for wabash because i saw them in their scrimmage v wheaton and even that was w limited action for the starters.

comparing teams who played mutual opponents in week 10-11 is also a crapshoot but i believe there are some poignant comparisons worth noting. much of that has been done on here already.

i believe much of kniss' bad day for ncc was caused by a speed of defense he hadn't seen before. that of course is speculation. I haven't seen depauw but my jugdement that their defense isn't as good as cap comes from a comparison of stats v lesser opponents. this also is admittedly flawed logic at best.

I think this will be a close game. i have a hard time believing wabash will score a lot of points but i also think capital will be offensively challenged by the little giants. I would love a little giants as i have always liked their program and school (especially w wheaton grad neathery coaching the d).

good luck to all. i picked capital in the oac pickems because my dad always taught me to bet against your heart and you will win one way or another.

I'd be happy to lose the oac pickems to the benefit of all you little giant fans!

DadofBashWarrior...another rabid fan of "Men of Wabash." Welcome to the board, the best of D3, mostly because of Wabash. Re: The Dayton Rule/Butler/skiers...this is the NCAA isn't it? The guys that bring us the BCS, right? I hope Butler does right itself in terms of their football program. kcreds: one of your better posts. Hey, a couple of points here & there, if the Bishops played up in at least one game and we would be talking a different story. Good luck to the LG's...Saturday is just the next step in your great season...keep it rolling!

Keep in mind that DePauw's win in 1998 was augmented by the signal stealing used by DePauw.
