Bashbrother,

I thought that only one player could be invited from any one team to the aztec bowl.  If that is the case, then Elliot would not be able to go.

bashbrother

Yes, I think Jdean mentioned that Elliott was invited and is going to the Hula Bowl.

I do believe the rule is one per team.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

"Cap99 -

Finally, a poster from your planet that speaks some reality.  If you need a safe house or two to stay at for a while, we have connections.  We also have a network of tunnels that can get you out of Ohio quickly.  You will meet a man named "TY" at the park tomorrow to receive further instructions.   ;)

Good luck."

LOL  :) Will he be wearing red and white striped pants or will he be in camo?

I am not to worried about getting out of Ohio. I know several ways. I could always stay with family in Michigan. (I bet that will get em goin)

I don't claim to know everything about DIII football I just said what I thought I saw in the ten games that I saw CAP play.

Actually, I think that almost all of the Capital posters over here were respectful and cordial. Note, that said almost all, and CAPITAL posters...as opposed to some of our other visitors from the East.

Not this Time :D.  I may not always agree, but I enjoy your post.  As I'm sure you don't always agree with mine.  I think we all wear rose color glasses.  That's what makes us fans.  As always.

I'm a little late to the ballgame but I was quite surprised by the outcome of the Wabash-Cap game.  I honestly thought Cap would blow them out.  Wabash's defense obviously kept them in the game.  It was better than I expected and I think Wabash proved themselves as a good team vs. a worthy opponent.  Based on the results thorughout the year with Wabash's close wins against Witt and 'Gheny I thought it wouldn't even be close.  I think that is a good indication that what happens earlier in the year or even weeks before a game is not always necessarliy a good indication of how a team will far against a common opponent.  Unfortunetly that is all we have to measure sometimes, but in this case it is not always a precursor as to what will happen.  I guess that's why we play the games!

As for Woo, what a way to finsh the year.  I thought they would struggle early and finish strong.  It was the exact opposite.  Granted injuries played a factor but a lot of improvment needs to be made between this year and next.  The talent is there so I am still optomistic heading into next year.  It will be interesting to see how some of the younger players develop.  It's amazing how one year can make a difference.  Look at Harbaugh this year.

This sucks.  College football is essentially over.  On the bright side, now I actually can do something productive on Saturdays.

jdean,

Elliott's going to be playing in the Las Vegas All-American Classic on Jan 14th and then the Hula Bowl on on Jan 21st.

I think you undersell Witt and Allegheny a bit, lancer.  Yes their records weren't great, especially by the standards of those programs, but they weren't bad teams.  Allegheny had one bad loss and six extremely close losses...any of which could have gone their way.  In all seriousness, Allegheny could have just as easily been 9-1 as they were 3-7.  Witt started out horrendously, lost their qb, went in the tank for a few weeks, then got their D straightened out and came back strong.  The Witt team that Wabash saw in October wouldn't have lost to Capital they way they did in week 1.  I don't think Witt could have beaten Capital, but it would have been a much better game than 54-0.

We shouldn't be surprised that Witt and Wabash played a close game.  Most of the games between the two in the last four years have been close.  I think you can expect closer games in conference because of the familiarity that two confernece opponents have with one another.  Creighton has a bead on Fincham's tendencies and Fincham has a bead on Creighton's tendencies.  Additionally, Witt was essentially in a do or die situation against Wabash and they certainly played like it.  Losing to Wabash essentially ended their year.

There is good football being played in the NCAC...it's about time we start recognizing it.  Anybody who watched Wabash this year shouldn't be surprised that they played about even with Cap (check the stats...it's about as even as a game can get).

I am doing a stats project at Earlham, I used third down percentages in my project.  I said that 33% was a good percentage, but my teacher wants information to back up that number, anyone know any sources?

Go to the NCAC stats, or any Conference for that matter.  You can go to the NCAA or even the NFL and compare your stats.

I am doing the project over our whole conference from the past 3 years, and 15 of the 18 teams that had winning record the past 3 years had a third down percentage over 33%, but my teacher wants hard evidence.  Any other suggestions, thanks.

Duster72

I don't think you could get "hard evidence" to support a term like "good."  It's all relative.  How "good" is "good"?

wally_wabash

If by "hard evidence" you mean a big data set, you'd probably have to gather numbers from all teams over the last handful of years.  From that data set, you could conceivably calculate a mean, standard deviations, etc. etc.  You could also correlate a team's winning percentage to their 3rd down conversion percentage pretty easily.

The hard part here is gathering the data...that's going to be a chore.  Most, if not all, conferences have websites that have a statistics page.  Most, if not all, of those pages will have the 3rd down conversion percentages for all of the teams in the conference.  The good websites will have stats archives as well so you can find those numbers from previous seasons.  That would give you data for 210 of the 228 D-3 football schools.  If you wanted to include the independents, you'd probably have to look their stats up at each school's website which may or may not have season stats linked.

33% sounds a little low to me.  I would say a good 3rd down conversion percentage is closer to 40%.  In fact, the average 3rd down conversion % for the NCAC in 2005 was just over 39%.  "Good", if we take "good" to mean significantly better than average, would probably be somewhere closer to 43%.

Re: 3r4d down conversions.

I am not sure how big a data set you may need.  The OAC statistics seem to dovetail nicely with the NCAC's

1. Mount Union......... 85  161  52.8
2. John Carroll........    63  131  48.1
3. Ohio Northern....... 53  116  45.7
4. Otterbein...........     64  146  43.8
5. Capital.............       84  196  42.9
6. Baldwin-Wallace.....   3  143  37.1
7. Marietta............      55  158  34.8
8. Heidelberg..........     49  165  29.7
9. Muskingum...........   36  137  26.3
10.Wilmington (Ohio)   37  148  25.0

I would say 33% is poor actually.  40% or so is the middle range.  50% is excellent.

smedindy

I agree. I think if you are 45% or above of 3rd down conversions, you are doing well.
