Concerning Witt and 5th years:

Goldsbury was a fifth year for the reasons discussed earlier.  Personally I think it showed pretty good commitment by him to come back and play his final year after all the adversity he went through (given, it was mainly self-induced).

Most the players mentioned had some sort of injury that caused them to miss a season.  They decided to hang around the extra semester (either by choice, or by academic need) and play one last year of football.  I know that I would do the same thing if I were in that position.

Also, some players who transferred from a D-1 school and were redshirted while there have also used that extra year of eligibility.  I know John Hauser (strong safety from 99-02) did that.

Many guys from the Clark County (Springfield) area often try to go to D-1 or D-2 and decide later to come home and go to Witt.  That can account for some of the 5th years as well.

I understand what y'all are saying. I know in the micro sense of a discussion of "thuggery" in the NCAC that what I was talking about isn't the case. And it may be imagined in the larger sense, too. I had no intention of impugning anyone.

I guess I so rarely hear about "thugs" in this discussion and so often hear about it on some of the I-A boards I hang out at that I forget that we really are talking about two different universes.

Sorry if there was any offense taken to my post.

Congrats to all of the NCAC players that were honored by Don Hansen's North Region team.

Nice to see T. Murray and J. Lange get some love.  Both great athletes.

Off-season has reduced me to this; posting about ebay items...but, alas, it's still D3 related! GO BISHOPS

oldguy, you're right, I agree the vast majority of 5th year players had injury issues or were transfers, etc... .  Wooster's had a couple in the past, notably Seth Duerr and Haijar (I think he was a 5th year guy...I might be wrong).  Believe me, I truly respect the guys that come back for a 5th year after battling an injury.

WooScot,

The name of Goldsbury strikes up an interesting memory.  Do you recall after our 2000 game, which we lost 28-14, when Godsbury hung around that evening in Wooster to stay with Wally and partake in our yearly end-of-football bash?  Needless to say he took it pretty hard that night from the Wooster players which he did good naturedly.  But then again he didn't have a choice even though they won the game.  Damn that game still pisses me off.  He endured a multitude of chants from us including "Goldsbury sucks!".  Not original I know but I guess you had to be there.

That was all before we broke the foundation on the house we were in and had to move the party back to the section.  Awww...Good times.   Now back to work and reality.

Haijar played basketball and baseball as a freshman.  He then gave up both and played just football the rest of his career allowing him the fifth year or fourth in the program

Lil' Giant:
No offense taken.  I didn't mean to imply that you were implying any racist aspect because I realized you were essentially making the statement that some people could potentially construe that term to be used in a racist manner.  Likewise, I was just trying to state my opinion about what I perceived the general context of that term when it is used.  On the other hand, I can see where perhpas in some instances (perhaps in some DI programs or in the pros even) someone could inappropriately intend it in that manner, or at least it be perceived as such.  Anyway, thanks for the follow-up.

So pleased I was with the results of that decade that I imbibed sidecars and danced the Charleston and Jitterbug to the melodic sound of the hurdy-gurdy until I needed several spoon-fuls of Goody's Headache Powder (trademarked).

I was despondent over the Black Sox scandal for most of that decade.  Only over the last few months have I fully recovered.

Lancer98,

Wow, that's a night I haven't thought of in awhile.  I do vaguely remember the Goldsburgy taunts, but the foundation cracking at the house (was that really the same night????) is a vivid memory.  College days...

Don Hansen's Weekly Football Gazette All-American selections are up.  NCAC represented by three picks:
Tristan Murray RB (Witt) 2nd Team Offense; Cisco Clarvoix DT (OWU) 2nd Team Defense; Russ Harbaugh QB (Wabash) Honorable Mention Offense.

Congratulations to all!

A team can return everybody they want and it doesn't matter if the personnel isn't up to snuff.  Wooster has some fine players, but based on what I saw in '05, it's my opinion that the Scots are a half step behind Witt and Wabash.  Let's be honest...it's not as if Wooster was knocking on the door against either of those teams last season.  A break one way or the other wasn't going to make a difference.  I expect Wooster to be better next year, but I'm not sure that they are going to make up the 5-6 touchdown difference that they had against the other W's in '05.

You want a prediction?  This is ridiculously early and I reserve the right to change my mind when we get into August and September....I think Wooster drops games to John Carrol, Witt, Wabash, and then one to either OWU or Allegheny (I think Allegheny is a legit player for the NCAC title next year).  I'm calling 6-4 again for the Scots next year....but it will be a lot more respectable than the 6-4 they posted in '05.
