Hawk, I have to say I agree with you on the perfect recipe!

Leadership is a must.  Proof of this can be found in the last few seasons of the NCAC.  The team with the most leadership (by way of seniors with experiance) typically won the title.

Defensively, those who know me know I am all D!  For me, D wins championships.  You can have the greatest offense in the world, but if you can't stop the other team from scoring, you can't win (by the way, a defense can score, but an offense can't keep an opposing team from scoring).

Haha, I believe I said this a few times last year, RUN THE BALL!  ;)

I almost want to disagree with your last three pics.  I think a well disciplined team is more important than playmakers.  Discipline starts with the coaching staff.    So I would put coaching next (both for discipline and for calling the right game plan for the talent on the field).  I don't care if you have Tony Sutton on the field, if the Defense is disciplined to fulfill their jobs, he wouldn't have anywhere to run.  Speaking as one who has been shook outta my shoes numerous times by Sutt, if others were where they were supposed to be, he would spin right into another defender.  I'm not saying talent is important, I just think that Discipline is a lil more important.  As I mentioned, coaching creates discipline.  But coaching is also important to call the right game plan for the situation.  If you have a Bettis in your backfield, you don't call plays for Bush.

Finally, Luck.  Yeah, luck is important.  But if a team does its job, and plays to its own level (Make it a NO DOUBTER) luck is a no factor.  Woo was lucky in the '04 games agains Bash and Witt.  Of course, if the pass defense was better, Woo would never have been in a situation where they needed luck (missed field goal, interception).

BB16, thanks for welcoming me back.  I have been busy with work, trying to get into law school.  Don't know if I will make it to Hollett.  I'd sure love to.  I think Woo will shock some ppl.  Course, I thought they would last year.  The did!  Unfortunately it was by way of a loss to the Krudyons (a lil townie lingo for the kenyon ppl  ;D)  I think had Shaff stayed healthy, Woo woulda finished in a much better position.  I am excited for this year.  I think Woo has some guys coming in that will help the program back to the top.

Let's go Scots, bring back the Black D!  Woo has the talent, I think some ppl need to pull their heads outta their asses (especially on the D side) and play how they know how to!!

And one last thing.  I know this is a D3 board, but I gotta vent.

I am sick of hearing about Notre Dame.  What have they done.  As a Buckeye fan...they should be talking about the butt whooping the Bucks put on em last year.  Why is ESPN all about Notre Dame spring game?  Notre Dame opens camp?  How many teams are there in D1...let's spread the wealth.

And now, as it is my day off...Spike TV has a wonderful marathon of MXC.  Later

Defense is a southbound train LG.  Darkside probably gets his rocks off from physical as well as psychological trauma.

The first Phd is in torture and torture is most illegal so hell fit right in.

Notice how theyre going to the SJD as the Phd is not so much popular amongst the law school professors.

All say if they had it to do over again they wouldnt have gone, but then they wouldnt be in the position to make such assertions but for.....

Just what this board needs....another lawyer.

Nothing wrong with Gerry Spence....well, except for that jacket. Of course, down here in Texas there are lawyers who wear cowboy boots with their suits.

Fortunately I don't run in the Tax Attorney circles. I see guys down at the courthouse who look like they got off the ranch, put on a sport coat and tie and went to work. Yeesh.

Hawk1404,

Do you know who is in line to to be the other starting cornerback opposite of Geffert? It seems like losing O'Connell will be a big loss. Not only did he look like a real good corner, but was really the only bright spot on special teams last year.

And can Wooster find a better backup in case Schafer goes down again? Wooster's offense was pathetic with Reiff at the helm.

scotty

seinfeld, did Keith Adams rejoin the team...hadnt heard anything official...
Boo Creepy Foot Doctor, Hooray Beer.

seinfeld

Not sure, Scotty. I know he is in school, but I'm not close enough to the program to know if he is with the team. I would imagine so. Not sure why he would come back to Wooster if he wasn't going to play.

From looking at the responses on what makes a championship team, I believe we are all on about the same page. I am now going to disprove what I originally stated in my last post. If everyone including coaches agree that you have to have a solid defense, be able to run the ball, and have talented athletes with leadership skills, then the main ingredient in a recipe is the coaches. They are responsible for the recruiting in those areas and placing the athletes in their right positions. It is also their responsibility to establish good leaders. Unlike the NBA ones that play poker at halftime or don't show up for fan appreciation night. I retract the statement that coaches are overrated and now state, coaches are invaluable. One more point, especially in the NCAC, coaches should be held accountable for the growth of their players academically. Woody Hayes comes to mind when I think of coaches caring about their players. He went to great lengths to assist players in graduating. Woody recruited, won championships, and cared about his players. Coach H is a good recruiter, cares about his players, and hopefully will win a NCAC Title. Goooooo Bishops!

Being a wing t advocate - and no, im not looking to start this convo again guys - one of the major reasons for running the wing t is the number of backfield positions and their transferrable skills to defense.

A kid looks at a team running I or whatever else is out there, sees theyre set at tailback for the next three years and decides to go elsewhere.  A kid looks at the wing t and sees that theyre set at fullback or wingback or diveback or halfback or whatever and says, hey theres still an opportunity for me to get the rock.

Its supposed to be simply a matter of getting the kids on campus and then retaining them.

Once little Johnnies in the program, bait him to the other side of the ball with some immediate gratification playing time, and voila you have a nice set of extremely athletic and talented linebackers etc.

Goes without saying, good colleges recruit defensive linemen and make them into offensive linemen, recruit big defensive backs and make them into linebackers, recruit big linebackers and make them into ends.

I agree wholeheartedly about leadership being the number one key to winning a championship, problem is it can never come from an individual or even a group of individuals.  Needs to be a dense core of leadership that overwhelms the team identity.

This is another area that is supposedly accentuated by the T.  No glamour boys in the backfield, "no block, no rock!"

I do have this feeling that Wabashs influence on the league is morphing the league into a fun and gun, dump and chuck, insert whatever cliched passing term you might here.  This really undervalues defense in my opinion as the composition of a game gets helter skelter.  I remember the old ICAC days, thats what the leagues going to become if the land of point guards sways the ideology too much.

Youll find, while I dont believe in exotic offense so much winning conference championships, generally speaking, not just the NCAC, I do believe exotic offense works well in the national playoffs.  Note Pacific Lutheran, Linfield and St Johns.

Ray Griffen
