Slow football day, so I looked at the fictional "All Sports Trophy" Rankings.

If you take only Mens sports (somehow missing Wrestling ... in which Wabash has a team) for the Mens All Sports Trophy, the rankings are as follows:

OWU 79.5
Den 76
All 74.5
Wit 70.5
Woo 70
Wab 67.5
Ken 66.5
Obe 46
Erl 21
Hir 20.5

Now, Hiram has no Mens Tennis, Erl has no Mens Swimming and Wabash alone has Mens Wrestling.  Ignore these variances for purposes of the Mens All Sports Trophy.  HOWEVER ... 4 schools (All, Erl, Hir, Wab) do not have Mens Lacrosse.  In fact NCAC does not qualify for auto bid in Lacrosse because not enough teams participate.  Yet ... NCAC includes it (with only 6 teams) for purposes of award numbers.  Excluding this obviously scewed aspect (unless, of course you wish to provide 10 points to Wabash for its Wrestling team ... using the same logic), the Mens All Sports Trophy comes out as:

All 74.5
Owu 70.5
Wab 67.5
Deb 66
Wit 64.5
Woo 63
Ken 58.5
Obe 41
Erl 21
Hir 20.5

If the arguement is "you have to include all mens sports ... then, giving Wabash 10 points for first place in Wrestling, ... VOILA makes Wabash 2nd in the first one (Mens All Sports regardless of number of school participants).

Pat Coleman

I think if a conference offers a sport then it should include it in its all-sports award -- go figure.

I believe it only takes five schools offering a sport for the NCAA to recognize it as a conference sport. Seven is not the be-all end-all standard.

According to the Wabash site, the Little Giants won the game against the Panamanian All-stars 18-0.

OK, time to look ahead to 2006.  I'm interested in thoughts about skill postion returners. First,  QBs.  Kenyon returns Sanchez:  1000 yd. rusher, adequate thrower, or perhaps a bit less than adequate.  Hiram has Henderson, who started as a freshman. Does this matter?  Wabash, probably Huff, who backed up Harbaugh and has had off-season shoulder surgery. Big unknown there.  Wooster, an experienced Schafer, injured part of last year and more effective earlier on with Sutton behind him. Talented. Can he be as good as many thought he would be?  Wittenberg, will it be Stokes or maybe Brumfield, who saw very limited time as a freshman?   OWU--Hymes??  Earlham, Is it true that Rummel will return?  He makes them hugely better   Behind him is Kerns.  Denison:  Cappetto took all the snaps and graduated. Who's there? Allegheny:  Savage is gone.  Who steps in?  Oberlin, Stein returns, with some ability to run and throw.  Those of you who know the league. What do you think?

Hymes got a lot of playing time last year for OWU. I like the idea he comes in with some good experience and he made some very nice plays last year. I think he will be better this year because he has more experienced and better skill players around him, compared to last year. Of course the biggest factor will be how good is the offensive line? The jury will probably be out on him and the line until after the season starts. My hope is that he can generate points in the air as well as the ground, not turn the ball over very often, and allow the defense to control the game. Goooooo Bishops!

Just wanted to correct a couple of things you said in your post. First, Stokes is no longer with the Witt program. Their quarterback is likely a kid named Jaren Collins, who was at Tennessee-Martin last year but has transferred to Witt. Rummel is back. Savage is still at Allegheny, and according to their updated roster, he looks to be the lone QB, as James Jones has been moved to WR.

Seinfeld:  thanks on Collins and Savage.  Wow, another transfer to follow Murray.  Good for Witt, but maybe bad for other teams if Collins is a top caliber QB. Do you know if Savage is a fifth-year senior? Maybe just a fourth year (?)  A healthy Rummel will make for an entertaining Earlham offense.  To continue a quick look at skill positions, consider the following ( please correct my errors):  Top Rbs---Murray (Witt), of course, and Coombs (Kenyon), both high quality.  Following closely or even on a par is Tarquinio (Gheny). Sheppard (Woo) had a good freshman start and should improve.  OWU will have its usual bunch of hard-running backs, to include Willis (also a good frosh last year).  Lee returns at Denison; he's big and sturdy.  Myers comes back for Earlham; undersized but solid.  Carroll (Obe) may be good.  Wabash:  question marks.  Brown returns, often injured.  I've heard Billy King will move over from defense. Hiram--don't know.  Hymes and Sanchez, QBs who run like RBs.

OK, while I'm at it on the skill positions.  And just to try to get some discussion going during the doldrums period.  WRs.  Wabash has depth and talent with Russell, Walker, Green returning. Nelson at TE.  I hear Banach is healthy, too.  Wooster has a big cast as well:  Swearingen, Peltz (TE), maybe Schrock and Miller.  Earlham with White and who knows, but maybe Jewel moving back from QB to his natural position.    Oberlin's Schubert might be the league's best threat.  Allegheny, I can recall only Lieb, and from Kenyon only Johnson. Witt, probably Harriman, and they always find another one.    Hiram:  Kravitz and Hardy (TE) return. OWU, the backs usually catch most of the balls.  Denison, I don't know.  All in all, some solid receivers based on last year's performances, with maybe Schubert, Russell, Walker, Swearingen, White leading the way.  But it seems receivers come out of nowhere based on the ability of the QB to deliver and the OL to give time to throw. Help!

sigma one, what about Tinsley at Wooster...did he return...showed flashes of brilliance at running back early in the season...

Wabash has a stud running back coming in from Penn HS
in Indiana...great junior season but injured in senior preseason...came back and finished strong...should bolster the Little Giants running game...also, great receiver out of the backfield...

Sounds like Finchy is looking for the quick fix...more cherry picking on higher division washouts.  I'll be excited when Witt lands an impact recruit out of high school.

In other Witt news, Witt has (another) new offensive coordinator this year and are currently without a defensive coordinator.  2006 is off to a rip-roaring start in Tiger country.

Tinsley was brilliant enough to get shuffled right on out of the rotation at RB for Wooster last year.  Did he get hurt?  He looked fine on special teams against Wabash.

Tinsley is long gone from school. I would assume Sheppard, considering he was the Newcomer of the Year, will be Wooster's back, but who knows.

One of the assistant coaches for Penn is a Wabash graduate from my class. My guess is that the RB you mentioned had a friendly little push toward the Little Giants.  ;D

Thanks for the info, Scotty.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

Wabash should be fine at RB with a healthy Don Juan Brown (surgery after the season), King, and a good crop of Frosh led by Sobecki - mentioned by Scotty.  Footnote - that is from a Wooster fan so it must me legit  ;D.  Not to mention, the O-line should be a great group with book end OTs in Hilts and Millikan along with Certain at one of the Guard spots.  They have plenty of guys who will compete for the remaining 2 positions and all of them have size, strength, & talent.

Anyone know any more on the Witt QB transfer?  Was he heavily recruited out of H.S., is he a drop back guy, dual threat, what?

Lastly, I would not want to defend the Bash WR corps with Banach and Russell (both 6'2 track/speed guys) and then mix in Mr. Juke with Walker...yikes.  Then don't forget Green - WR, Nelson - TE - they are absolutely loaded.

I just hope the Wabash D is OK... ;D

Gosh, I wish Bash could land a D1 transfer one of these days...  ;)
