You have to be kidding me this is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard of.  I have personally seen a high school game where the first, second and third team offenses were pulled by the end of the first quarter.  If I am not mistaken the score ended up being 90-0 and the Freshman team scored 42.

Yeah. I've seen games like that too. I'm not buying this. I meant that I understand the idea of trying to avoid these types of games. But punishing a coach isn't the way to do it. Why you have a "mercy rule" in baseball (even the Big 12 has one) but not in football is beyond me.

TU2698,

I have not seen him play.  He got  a lot of press this past year.  It did seem some schools wanted him as a db instead of a QB, but that is where he got all the press.  Maybe he is overhyped I don't know but he was very successful in High School in many sports and he played top-notch competition being from a Division I high school in Ohio(Columbus area).  He obviuosly wanted to play QB.  I do not know Witt's QB situation for next year but I would not be surprised if he starts just based on what I have read and heard.

The jump from high school, even a top division school, to college isn't easy for a QB.  At the high school level, even a top notch team might have 3 or 4 key defensive players to be aware of, and the offensive play book won't be to the level of a college team.  At the college level, a qb has to be aware of all 11 defensive players, and to manage a more sophisticated offense.  Some qb's adapt quickly for others it takes some time.  This is not to say that a freshman qb can't be effective, but he will be more more effective after playing at the college level for a year or 2.

The MUC tackle you are referring to is Larry Kinnard.  It wasn't as cut and dry as originally posted but he has some academic troubles at OSU, and was a local boy from the Alliance area if I recall correctly.  I also seem to remember reading there might have been some family health issues that prompted him to come a little closer to home.  He never made it very far with the Buckeyes and certainly never saw the field.  He had a nice career at Mount but he wasn't exactly a prize Buckeye recruit according to the Mounties that post on here regularly.

Re: the blowout rule from ESPN.com

I am living in CT and asked the guys in the OAC what they thought when this story came out a couple days ago.  First of all, HS football in CT is a joke.  I was mocked by coworkers when I said I was interested in seeing a game here.  They basically said if you don't have a kid playing or a family/friend coaching, then you should never be caught at a game.  They already treat football like a joke here so it doesn't surprise me that they came out with this ruling.  Of course, it sickens me, but it certainly does not surprise me in the least.  I feel bad for the kids, this state is a black hole for hs football.

Kinnard never played, never practiced, did not attend a class and might never have enrolled officially at Ohio State. He had a 2.495 high school GPA and did not qualify through the NCAA clearinghouse to get a scholarship. The program did not want to help him appeal a potential error in a summer school transcript that could have made him eligible.

With that and his father's health, Kinnard elected to go to Mount Union.

Yeah...what Pat said.

I knew he didn't get much farther than I did when it comes to suiting up for the scarlet and gray.  I wasn't sure who was the family member but I knew there was a health concern with someone back home.

Can OWU go into the Wabash game undefeated? The Bishops open with Franklin (no winning seasons in last 7), Catholic (5 straight losing seasons) and Bethany (3 straight 1-9 seasons). Not exactly murderer's row.

Now is as good a time as any to look at non-con schedules....

Allegheny - @ Westminster, @ W&J, vs. Hiram...egads, add those two road games with NCAC games at  Wabash, Wooster, and Witt and you get about the ugliest schedule I've seen in a long time.  The Gators are going to earn everything they get this year.

Denison - @ Randolph-Macon, vs. CWRU, @ Gettysburg...this seems like a strength-appropriate schedule to me.

Earlham - @ RHIT, @ Manchester, vs. Anderson...does Earlham have an honorary HCAC membership?   :)

Hiram - vs. Carnegie Mellon, @ Bethany, @ Allegheny...I'd love to see  Hiram win one of these...best chance will be against Bethany.

Kenyon - @ Grinnell, @ Claremont Mudd-Scripps, @ CWRU.  Talk about your road dogs.  Kenyon could run that table in spite of the loooong trips.

Oberlin - @ CWRU, vs. Heidelberg, vs. W&J...so help us all if the 'Berg snap their 26-game losing streak vs. Oberlin.

OWU - see post below

Wabash -  @ Franklin, vs. Millikin, vs. DePauw.  I'm very anxious to see the NCAC vs. CCIW matchup.  The CCIW lost just 3 regular season non-conference games in '05.

Witt - @ Capital, vs. Dayton, vs. Alma...same brutal gauntlet they faced last year.  Let's see if they can get the Capital monkey off their back.  If you're keeping score from '04-'05, the tally is Capital 103, Witt 16.  Yeouch.

Wooster - vs. John Carroll, @ Waynesburg, vs. CWRU.  Good OAC tester, and of course, the fish stringer.

Looks like plenty of good September football.

Anyone know the out of state commits for Wabash and any information on them? I know they landed a few in Illinois and Ohio, just curious if anyone had name or information.

Wally_Wabash on Earlham's honorary membership to the HCAC yes they do have one they also scrimage Mt. St. Joeseph.  Interested to see how OWU does against Franklin and the Mike Leonard Offense.

BashBacker#16

CB3454,

I think Bash landed kids from IL, MI, OH, FL, AZ, and CA.  I don't believe they have any from Texas this year which is the first in a while.  It seems to be a good mix with the majority of this class being IN kids.

It is interesting to see the ties coaches have in certain areas and how those change as coaches come and go.  Coach Ward used to score in AZ.  Coach Lemmond is from FL which probably played in to the "hits" this year from there.  I am glad to see IL coming back a bit.  Witt landed some Roncalli guys (Funke - starting Center) and Perry Meridian (Harmon - starting MLB) - I think due to connections with former OC - Isphording (wasn't he a Roncalli grad?).

OWU held Franklin to just 14 points last year.  The Bishops are usually pretty stingy on D.  I believe they're the only NCAC team that Wabash hasn't put 40 up against since joining the confernece.  In fact, OWU hasn't even given up 30 to Wabash yet.

Franklin/OWU should be a decent game...an interesting contrast in styles anyway.  By the way, what's with the 1:30 start times?  Is that an HCAC quirk or what?
