Wrong, BigRed.  The guy spends about half of his time eating, drinking, and sleeping football and the other half with baseball.  Remember, he's the head baseball coach down there as well.

If I'm a 30-year old guy who just had a head coaching opportunity fall into my lap, I'm probably going to count my blessings and do everything in my power not to waste the opportunity.  As such, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to skip a year of summer league baseball, leaf through a copy of Football Coaching for Dummies and start figuring out what I want to do with the program.  The point is that people his age don't get opportunities like this very often and pitching for the C'ville Eagles doesn't give off the impression that he's really taking the whole thing seriously.

I can obviously see why Wabash is jumping on this issue, just another example of a rivalry team talking smack on the other. I see nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun at DPU's expense. This is an NCAC board isn't it? ;D

I wonder what the majority of all college football coaches are doing right now ??? I hope that Coach H is sitting back, relaxing, and getting recharged for this season. 8)

i have to agree with Wally on this one...with the bizarre last year with Rogers and the 4 year merry go round, i would think that "taking it seriously" would trump any personal activities...

could this be an indication that the position is only for 1 year...

He did make a commitment to coach and play with the team this summer, so it is probably the honorable thing to do to honor that commitment. He also had a long vacation in Greece this summer, too. It definitely will be quite interesting down at DPU, though.

I think I have broken the code:

Eagles ..... Dannies;  Eagles ... Dannies; Eagles ... Dannies ... More stability with the Eagles.

DePauw had an unbeaten conference record last year (and I know that they didn't face perennial power Trinity).  However, at worst they would have been 7-3.  Unless, they have lost a ton of seniors I'm sure that DePauw will be alright this year.  By the way I thought this was a NCAC post anyway...just kidding.  I guess some of you are right who feel he should be focusing more on his first year as the head coach.  However, I'm sure he is not showing up 2 to 3 hours early to the ballpark for batting practice like a Major Leaguer.  I'm sure he is spending a decent amount of time in the office contacting recruits and putting together a new playbook.  One year deal or not, I don't feel that he wants to mess this opportunity up--especially since he is only 30 years old and could have a nice career develop out of this.

Geez ... why do I think that Scotty's relentless posts on the subject led to this?

I'm not particularly pleased.

I'm going to declare this axe-grinding under the Terms of Service and suggest Scotty move on. This is not what this board is for.

Though having covered a couple of games for them this year, they were always short handed, and had to play a doubleheader once this year with only 10 players, and five of them were primarily pitchers. So I can see the shortage of bodies as an issue.

GoBigRed: I read the OWU season in review 2005 again. I just realized that it states a win over traditional rival Denison. Is there a real rivalry between OWU and Denison? Can anyone give any insight to this rivalry?

GoBigRed04

kcreds:  I'll admit that football wise it hasn't been much of a rivalry due to OWU's consitent wins against the Big Red.  However, as far as our other sports are concerned we fare pretty well against the Bishops.  Like I said earlier though, aside from the 2004 disaster the margin of victory has gotten smaller and smaller.  This year should be the year that things start to even up a bit.  Denison is finally to the point where they will not HAVE TO play freshman as have since Coach Fletcher came to Denison in 2000.  They are at the point to where they can rely primarily on EXPERIENCED juniors and seniors to lead them.  So we shall see what happens on October 14 when the Big Red and the Bishops go at it--most likely under the lights since Denison has finally decided to get them.  Should be a great game.

Methinks the rivalry has something to do with honor to formation and style of play.

Legendary Denison coach Piper ran the single wing and was considered a great innovator.

Back in the days before Woody Hayes came to Denison, there were two choices to offensive formation: single wing and T

As we all know, OWU in Delaware Ohio runs the wing t, most poetically as the pinnacle of all wing t - dom is the University of Delaware.

Well, the advent of the T formation moved the quarterback under center, for the purposes of greater vision for the offense and, including the ball wizardry of a quarterback turning his back to the offense to either pass or throw, decreased vision and increases decision for the defense.

Before Piper was running the single wing at Denison there was this thing called the A formation, which was probably a great part of the Piper Wing.

The A formation looks much like the I formation without a quarterback under center.  The only wrinkle being the fullback offset just enough to allow the long snap through to the deepset tailback.  The quarterback, meaning the back set a quarter of the way back, was essentially a boneback to the strength.  In the event that the play did not call for a long snap, the center might eggroll the ball and the quarterback and fullback might do some crossing or other wizardry before the ball found its carrier.

The single wing had many of the attributes of todays edge blocking plunge schemes lauded by I adherents, while the T had many of the east west running with angle blocks that most loathe and despise of the wing T.

The rivalry is most probably a claim to the cloud of dust in Columbus and steadfastness to history and formation.  While the T used deception to enhance the passing game, Woody employed many of the tricks of the T for wizardry in the run game as well as the gathered blocking with the devastating edges of the the single wing for the run as well.

Just a thought, not based on anything but pure speculation, but Dension did run the single wing for a few series in the dedication of Piper Field during league play in the 90s.

Pat,

Axe-grinding and scotty are synonymous with eachother.

He's like a rogue sniper, who's weapon of choice is a water gun.  He'll pop up from time to time take a weak shot and disappear for a few days hoping the posters who called him out on his previous blast (for lack of better word), have forgotten the whole thing.
