I do want to make a clarification on the first line of the post in question. I truly believed during preseason that OWU was going to be in great shape to be a legitimate contender and posted same. I have realized since that I was off base and wanted everyone to know I admit I was wrong in my assumption. I guess after reading it again it could have been misconstrued as being disgruntled.

MacLeod: Very good points, I just want to add that it was my understanding that Coach H did visit successful DI coaches to look at their offenses and that is one of the reasons I was so optimistic this year. I like the wing t but continue to add some flare to it.

Am actually more familiar with OWUs staff than I let on.  Subscribe to a few wing t newsletters here and there.  Coach H is a publisher and I followed some of his trek this summer.  Believe Shippensburg was one of the schools on his slate and as such, am colored in my opinions.

The two schools of thought that seem to be evolving in the wing t, outside the Wyatt double wing short split, are the fullback as I back multiple west coast looks and the fullback as split back to the tight end side Bill Walsh west coast look.  The latter is the traditional buck and power series with attendant counter criss cross and saly, whereas the former really is multiple.

I am an advocate of the fullback as I back in the multiple west coast, and this is not what I believe is evolving in the Shippensberg school.

The Texas guys and their Penn State progeny (sic) are using a short punt formation wherein the fullbackis the quarterback and they are unbalancing the line.  Heard som allusions as to Franklin using this against OWU.  Not that the quarterback has to run so much, as the discount of quarterback wizardry and a premium on decreased visibility through line play.  Franklin used Sally to beat OWU two years ago, and it amazes me how many people call the wing t ancient when it really is the only way to even go aout assessing a oneback run game without being trivial.

As always, anybody can coach talent, and therere advocates of this and that out there, but right now Im on that bandwagon that is using multiple west coast looks, treating the fullback as an I back and using the wings as a complement to oneback sets ala Mashall Faulk to Robert Holcombe.  Man if only JJ Arrington and Edgerrin James could share carries in AZ.

Probably not as many mesh opportunitys in the pass game with the flank (wing) in so tightbut the dig and smash stuff should be there with the moving pocket.

Macleod: There are times that you get to me with your comments but I do like some of the insights you give. I was told that Coach H even went to WVU to study their offense. Had you heard that?

I really don't know if the focus on OWU should be really on the offense anyway, it seems they are scoring a good deal of points but the defense is not doing their part. I believe Coach H gets a lot out of his offensive players and I expected to see the offense to score enough to win but the defense carry the load. My next question is not so much how do you change the offense for the better but are they changing the defense for the better? I hope they make the changes needed going into conference play but I'm not as optimistic as I was before. The slate will be clean this week and a new beginning to a season emerges.

I don't think I implied anything disgruntled but if I did I am sure someone will point it out. ;D

Not that many people care too much about the Wooster-Case game (outside of the Baird Trophy fanatics), but I think the game will be a lot closer than people think.

First off, last year's game was very competitive until the fourth quarter, when Wooster's running game just wore down Case. But at least part of that was due to the fact that Case was missing several players with injuries. And while Wooster returns most of its team from last year, so does Case.

The outcome of this game will probably hinge on the very interesting quarterback matchup. We all know about Schafer, but Case has a freshman quarterback that has started from day one, and he is supposed to be the real deal. It will be interesting if he will suffer growing pains against the best defense he has played this year, or whether he makes up the difference from last year's game.

What is bewildering is Schafer's numbers so far. Take away the first half against JCU, he is just 15-for-26 for 115 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Waynesburg had a pretty poor defense, and Wooster's passing game was nearly non-existant. Considering all the Scots' receivers are back from last year, this is puzzling.

The forecast is for some heavy rain Saturday, which could make this game (or any game in Ohio) a crapshoot.

MacLeod: Fred Gehrke played HB in the NFL - mostly with the Cleveland/St. Louis Rams; being an art student "invented " the horn on the Rams helmet in 1947, generally credited with being the first helmet logo (if one overlooks Fritz Crisler's development of the winged helmet initially at Princeton); and eventually served as General Manager of the Denver Broncos during the Orange Crush years. But you probably know all that.

What is Schafer's W/L record without Sutton?

The_Bishop

What ever happened to Sutton?  Did he ever catch on in Canada, overseas, or with an arena team?  I thought he tried out for an NFL team but never heard anything after that.

I had this nice post typed up, but then the site locked up and it didn't process. Oh well.

Anyway, the jist of it was he is 5-2 without Sutton. He also just hasn't progressed like you think a quarterback of his talent should have. I don't know if he just hasn't improved his decision making, or the passing schemes just haven't worked for him. Either way, he isn't as good a quarterback as we were led to believe when he came to Wooster.

And now I see seinfeld has done the same research I just did.  I got 5-2 as well.  The five wins were all last season: Muskingum, MacMurray, CWRU, Allegheny, and Oberlin.  The losses were to Oberlin in '03 and Wabash in '05.

Schafer is a decent enough quarterback.  I was thoroughly impressed with his guts in the Wabash game last season.  Nobody can live up to the kind of hype Schmitz littered through the press about this kid when he came to Wooster.  Perhaps having Tony Sutton for two years (no need to get pass happy when you have trusty #7 lining up behind you) and then being riddled with injuries last season have seriously stunted his maturity as a quarterback.

I forgot about this year's two wins. He is actually 7-2 as a starter.

And your credentials for rating and judging QB's are.......................?

What were your records as QB?

Schafer is the real deal.

It sure would be a boring place if we could only talk about stuff that we had "credentials" for.

Anyone want to talk about about whether the Collateral Source rule is still applicable in Texas personal injury suits?

Yeah, didn't think so. Let's get back to quaterbacks.

Thanx for the CWRU props.  Unfortunately injuries have struck again.  A MLB and S were both on crutches at the end of the Kenyon game.  Two starters from last year's OL have not played a down due to injury and a third didn't return to the team.  And the Fr starting LT has a torn meniscus.  Still the offensive performance against Kenyon was the best since 2003.  No one should be shocked if the game is close, but I'm staying grounded (BB 16's view to the contrary notwithstanding).

To clarify, Whalen did not play in game one until the start of the second half.
