I just heard a late report - Earlham just scored again, on a 71 yard pass play.... ;D

Some week 2 thoughts...

Big time gut check for Wittenberg.  They deserve a lot of credit for playing like they did on Saturday.

A tip of the cap goes off to Wooster as well...leaving no doubt is how the top half of our conference sends a message.

Unless of course Gheny and OWU both lose.  Where was the OWU defense?  Looks like Allegheny lost on turnovers for the second week in a row...turnovers will kill you in big games.

Sorry to see Denison deflated...I was hoping that they would be legit this year.  Good to see Oberlin win and it's good to see Hiram score some points.

Kenyon appears to be doing well...they racked up 453 yards of offense and pretty much dominated the box score against Centre.  Some 4th quarter miscues tripped them up though.  I'm setting the over/under for the Kenyon/Earlham game at 130.

And finally, Wabash.  Not much to add on to what's already been said.  Wabash dominated, start to finish, as a good team should against a team like K'zoo.  Everything looked pretty easy for Wabash on Saturday...things were in sync, the qb had time to throw, the rb's had holes to run through, the defense contained everything.  It gets tougher next week, but right now I'd say Wabash looks worlds more comfortable than they did at this time last year.  And keep your eye on Don Juan Brown...he's pretty good.

I agree with you.  Yes, talk to you later.  Have a great week.

Reality Check,

Tony got a look from the Cleveland Browns in a Rookie Minicamp but they opted not to sign him to a free-agent deal.  It will be interesting to see if he pursues othe opportunities such as NFL Europe.

As a side note, Tyrell Sutton rushed for over 200 yards and scored 4 touchdowns for Northwestern on Saturday.  Not a bad start I would say for him.  It appears he has a great career ahead of him.

Let's hope the Scots can keep the momentum going.  I would love to see them 5-0 going into that game against Wabash.

Yes, DJB looks very special!  And, Chris Ogden back and running with strength was great to see--Wash U's defense will be a meaningful test for both.

Also agree with your comments concerning Bash's OL play on Saturday--they were fine.

I think OWU has a little payback in store for Olivet on Saturday.  If Franklin can beat them, you've got to like your chances.  Just bring some run defense.

Nice to see Wooster & Wabash play tough.  Witt played well against tough odds.  5-0 going into Wabash week would be a nice event.

Yeah, starting with Jim Barnes at Wooster, the coaching staff has always hired former players, some years more than others.  It seems Schmitz has really taken this philosophy to the next level as the past few years has seen a number of recent and not so recent grads take assistant coaching positions.  Some have been around for awhile now, like Rooker, other came home after stints elsewhere, like Duerr, and some recent grads hung-around to coach their old teammates, like Sutton & Kearney.  I think this goes to show how much faith Schmitz has in his former players.  This is a good philosophy, I think, when it comes to hiring coaches b/c you already know the kind of person you're getting on your staff, plus you already have a repoire with them, even though that relationship must evolve into a working relationship.  Heck, Lancer, I'm sure Coach would let you come back and coach DBs if you asked!

I left out someone in my comments regarding the website coverage of the Wabash game: Jim Amidon. He took the photos. Didn't mean Jim any disrespect. Good job, Jim.

Wabash also has a history of having a recent alum or two on the coaching staff.  This year former all conference center Tom Meeker and former all-conference safety Stu Johnson are on the staff.  Both were members of the '02 playoff team.  These guys are just the two current examples...there has been a recent alum on the coaching staff for about as long as I have been following Wabash football.

I left off Seth Mastrine on the former Wooster players now coach list.  I think he's been there since he graduated in 2001.  Sorry.

Don't know if anyone outside of Wooster nation will be interested in this, but Tyrell Sutton has been nominated for Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week Award.  You can read an article about it, as well as vote for him, http://nusports.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/091105aaa.html

You'd never know Coach Meeker was an all conference center ('02) since he has dropped a ton of weight - he looks like a wideout.  3-7 miles/day on the treadmill can do that.  Glad to have Meeks and Stu on the Wabash coaching staff!

It should also be noted that I think Wabash will get some key guys back this week for WashU...Billy King should be back at Free Safety, Millikan should be back at OT, and Parker will be back on D at ILB!  Do you think WashU will be watching Parker closely after his 4 sack performance against the Bears last year???

Congrats to Rummell on NCAC offensive player of the week.  This is a great honor on an athlete in a program such as Earlham.

You shouldn't need any extra players this week as Wash. has virtually no offense other than 1 very good end. They do have a decent defense that pursues the ball better than alot of D's.

Some interesting notes from some of our games this week...

Denison trailed 17-0 at halftime again this week, but couldn't come back as they did against Waynesburg in week 1.  The likely reason is because CWRU ran the ball and controlled the clock with the ball whereas Waynesburg kept putting the ball in the air and inviting interceptions.  But don't worry about Denison's loss...after all, they were playing at the grand opening of a brand new stadium. :)

Oberlin's dominance of Macalester is hidden a bit in the box score...Mac outgained Oberlin, but most of their yardage came after the Yeomen took a 34-0 lead.  Oberlin was only 3 of 14 on third down...something that needs improving.  Congratulations to Coach Ramsey who wins his first non-conference game as Oberlin's head coach.

Strange, strange game for OWU.  The Bishops threw 30 passes...in the same game!  Sir Louis breaks the OWU record for TD passes in a game with 5.  Bizzarre.  OWU got killed on third down...Thiel converted 8 of 11 third downs.
