Li'l G,
You covered that one well.  ::)

I've long felt that the 'Heisman' should select a different role model, since he was guilty of the worst 'run-up-the-score' in college history (216-0 over Cumberland).

Those who call the Gagliardi the 'd3 Heisman' are not JUST ignorant, they are insulting Coach Gagliardi (who should never be demeaned by being in the same sentence as Coach Heisman).

Li'l Giant

The Heisman is about hype. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Gagliardi is a much more worthy honor. Good luck to all the finalists.

While I agree with your second line, I think your first line is overly harsh.

MOST years I think they get it right about the best qb, rb, or wr.  Of course, that is pretty limited as far as the best player! :P

As far as I can recall, I think Charles Woodson was the only primarily defensive player to ever win the Heisman, and even he may have passed Peyton Manning only because he cajoled his way on to the offense (my memory may be exaggerating, but I seem to recall that he had 5 plays on offense and scored 3 TDs!).

There's no reason why a guard or tackle couldn't be the best player in college football. The last year Orlando Pace played in college he WAS the best player in the country.

Oh, God.  Come on.  The reason that linemen don't win the Heisman is because there's no way to assess it.  There are an elite group of linemen out there that have everything it takes physically to do the job.  What puts a lineman above the others is whether or not he's able to figure out whom to block, and there's no way anyone but the coaches can know if he did it right or not.  How can you actually try and say that he WAS the best player in the country?  Were you on the headset?  Are you saying you watched Orlando Pace every snap instead of watching Eddie George?  When Pace wasn't on the field, did you also watch all five of the other team's offensive linemen simultaneously?  While you were doing that, did you happen to catch how many blockers Dan Wilkinson occupied while Katzenmoyer cleaned up on tackles?  Maybe Pace wasn't even the best lineman on the team.

I'm not saying he isn't/wasn't great.  I'm just saying there's no way you can legitimately make that claim.  You must be a Bucknut.

Right. A Bucknut??? Get real. You don't know me very well, I 'pose.

I just saw what I saw, and I think it's a very real possibility that Pace was the best player in college football that year.

Dan Wilkinson played with Katzenmoyer???  Hmmm....the Big Kat was a freshman in 96 and I believe Big Daddy was already in the League at that point.

While we are on the subject....I want to say Katzenmoyer had Luke Fickell(current OSU co d-coordinator) and Winfield Garnett as his DT's.  ;)  Don't quote me on that though.....

I'll tell you how you can measure an offensive lineman. Number 1- How many pancakes did he have, (not the eating kind) 2-How many sacks were allowed from his area of blocking, 3-How many times you saw him downfield blocking defensive backs and pancaking them. Pace was a phenom. The press and game announcers talked about him constantly. He was huge but quick. He was the basis behind an airplane flyer during an Ohio State bowl game that stated "wider is better." It is not a stretch to believe Pace should have won, even though I knew he wouldn't. I never saw any offensive lineman do what he did prior to him and I haven't seen one since.

Pancakes?  Pancakes? .... Ben ... where are you?

Would you spot shadow an offensive lineman that the press was not telling you to watch?  Or one that did not appear on an airplane flyer?  I'm just suggesting that you have never paid much attention to other linemen.

Really, I think he's a great player.  I'm just saying that assessment is impossible to make.  Unless, of course, you're a bucknut.

You made my point, how many offensive lineman that you can recall that the media really hyped? Not just mention as part of a key to a game but really hyped. Maranavich or something like that is the only other one I can remember that got a lot of attention. Not only for being good in college but how he bombed in the NFL. You however make a good point, a standard needs to be set for offensive lineman to be considered. How bout we base it on how they compared to Pace?  ;D

You are right about me too, I am a huge Buckeye fan! I never missed an Ohio State game at home for 5 years straight, not a big deal right? I scalped tickets for every game. I also scalped tickets and went to the Rose Bowl against Jake the Snake, Holiday Bowl against BYU, and the best game of all, the 2002 National Championship. Can't do it now because I have one in college and another a senior in high school. My next major bowl game that I will attend someday will be the Stagg Bowl! Yes I am a bucknut and a football nut.
