Surely helps last year's best passer in the land is gone from the Crusader's roster.

Was he the best passer or the best quarterback?   :)

I think perhaps even more important than the loss of Pentello will be the graduation of the Hauslers.  I think the Tin Man could have qb'd Capital to wins over Witt the last few seasons because Witt couldn't score any points.  Even without Murray (Witt is never hurting for running backs), I think Witt should be able to find the end zone this time around, hence (shameless plug alert!) the relatively conservative spread on the game in the NCAC Pick 'Em.  Who knows, Capital's identity for the last 3-4 years has been Pentello and Hauslers...the Crusaders are enough of a mystery that Witt might even be able to pull this one off which would be a great win for the Tigers and for the conference.

It would be nice if there were enough non-Wabash conversation to keep a board going. :)

This is what I actually said to medicine man, for the record. :)

In this instance wally, both.  Just a damn fine football player.

Have to take into account some things besides the Hausler's.  Three of the last four meetings have been such blowouts so early that Witt was surely taken out of any semblance of a game plan.  Moreso blowouts by the Cap offense, though the Cap defense did its fair share of scoring.

Pentello, Hauslers et al graduating, this game is undoubtedly a huge test for even the most veteran of teams.  Factor in the mojo, Witt doesn't know how to beat these guys, the generational opposition, Cap's Witt Alum coach thinks the Checkmates are greater than the Red Swarm is greater than whatever the defense is calling or (hoepfully not calling) itself.

Being from the Red Swarm generation which technically began under Coach Willis during the first year of Coach Fincham's tenure as the head man, want our guy to beat their (the 70's) guy.

Forget the namedness of the defenses, think its getting to the point where the Tigers show up and call themselves the Tigers on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game.  Unity of effect.

If this group of Tigers find the intestinal fortitude to conquer their personal Capital demon, then will probably have to out and out start start talking smack to you non kilt wearing hooligans from Crawfordsville, because that win might just stoke the fire.....

I think I can I think I can...

Somebody wake up Walsh and tell him to mention the appropriate tag line here..

On second thought, save it for Denison week.

We are MOST interested in fans of Denison, Kenyon, Hiram and Oberlin because they do give us insight on their teams. We WANT them to be better - it helps the NCAC as a whole!

Quote from: ScotLass on August 24, 2007, 09:42:22 AMThe Wooster fans on the basketball boards argument is kind of like "two wrongs don't make a right" OR my asking my kids what they were thinking and they say "everybody else was doing it"

Then, come hoops season, I don't want to hear the Wabash domination of the football board as a justification for the Wooster domination of the hoops board. That argument has been thrown in both directions as justifications of the status quo.

Neither the Wooster hoops nor Wabash football fans on this site have ever (in my recollection) run off any poster from another school or even loudly complained about the presence of fans of other schools (except of a certain OAC poster in the NCAC Baseball board).

The real problem is people who post things they would never say to someone's face. Like b.s. little denigrations and insults. That's a problem from people in all camps. That deserves to be called out.

"The real problem is people who post things they would never say to someone's face."   per Lil Giant.

I have no fear of saying anything to your face, don't flatter yourself.

Many posters have tired of the NCAC board.  If anyone from Denison, or Hiram, etc. were to, as Scot Lass said, get on to discuss their teams they would without a doubt be ridiculed.

Tell me the four years spent calling Justin Schafer "Elway" was meant in a kind manner. I don't think so. But to say anything about a Bash player would be a sin.

Again, as per Scot Lass, congrats on being able to put someone down.

I have a crisp Benjamin with your name on it if you can quote me calling him that. I agree with you. Those are the types of remarks that are the "b.s. insults" I was talking about.

Don't assume that because I'm a Wabash fan I'm going to automatically defend what another Wabash fan says.

The only time I quoted you was in quotation marks.  I did not say that "Lil Giant" called Schafer "Elway"  but I will take your "crisp Benjamin" if you wish.  I can use it.

As far as "Mr. Internet Tough Guy"  you assume I am a man... maybe, maybe not.

However, you were the one who said people would never say these things to a person's face, just letting you know that would not be a problem.

Really?  That's what this is about?  You know, if there wasn't a good amount of respect for the kid, I don't think most people would even bother to take that jab.  Further, if you can separate the tongue-in-cheek posts from the rest, you'll find a good number of Wabash fans have heaped praise on Schafer in the past (self included), particularly after the gutsy 2005 game vs. Wabash and then again a few pages back during a brief discussion about Wooster's current qb situation.

And that whole thing is more the fault of Wooster's coach than anything else...I'm going to guess that Coach S. learned a big lesson in expecations management after that.  It was kind of a dumb thing to put out into the press, and it's one of those things that the opposing fans are going to latch on to and have fun with for the duration of the subject's career.  That sort of thing happens all the time to all kinds of people...I've got unsavory nicknames that have stemmed from stupid things that I've said or done in the past that my friends (even some who frequent this board) still use to this day.  If we can't bust our friend's hump over the stupid stuff they've said or done in the past, what has our world come to?   :)

Of course it is Coach Schmitz's fault, could not be that Bash did anything wrong.

I think, "heaped praise"  might be a little exaggerated.

No this is not what it is about just one that stands out.........

(a) No quote, no Benjamin.

(b) your username is "medicine man". Pardon me for assuming you were male.

(c) again, there are some who post and run and wouldn't dare say the stuff they post to someone's face. I never said you were one of them.

In my profession it's refreshing to meet someone who actually says the same things in public they say in private. If that's you, great. Others around here should follow that example.

Schmitz not only provided the ammo, he lit the fuse!  It was a ridiculous thing to have put into the press.  It would have been irresponsible for knowledgeable, engaged fans to have NOT had some fun with it.   :)

And again, I'll stress that if people truly didn't like the guy, they probably wouldn't have bothered to use their time to talk about him.  Lighten up.  In general, we kid because we care...unless the shots we're taking are aimed at Depauw.  Those are typically born out of genuine loathing.

Okay Wally....I'm game.....no patients to see this morning, so let's talk Woo.

Saw them last week at the Black/Gold scrimmage in miserable weather. Also, hard to identify people as they weren't wearing their assigned numbers.

Lots of experience lost to graduation. That's gonna hurt.

Quarterback: Parker and Holter would appear to be competing for starter. Two of the freshman looked good....one was very quick, but they were in with 3rd/4th stringers so hard to say how they would look with the 1st string offense.

Offense: some miscues and bumbling as one would expect with the first scrimmage. A couple of freshmen on the O-line are big and quick. Sheppard was as always outstanding.....you better really mean to tackle him or he's gone.

Kickers: all pretty good, but one freshman was outstanding......don't know his name but he had some awesome black and yellow shoes.

Defense: the new d-line coach is pumped up and motivating. Schermbeck appears to be moving from the outside to the middle position this year. Ends were Thomas (senior) and Brown (junior) both of whom rotated in for the Watson/Mizak duo last year. Thomas has experience, Brown transferred in from Ohio Northern last year and was named Special Teams Player of the Year and is well known to the Woo faithful for his bonecrushing tackles on kick-offs.

Special teams: a few glitches on the various setups as one would expect at a first scrimmage.

Overall the guys were pumped up.....lots of noise from the sidelines. Are they gonna win the conference? Probably not. Are they gonna be competitive? Absolutely.

Updates as warranted after the B-W scrimmage tomorrow.

Interesting...how do the different qb's compare?  Is one more of a runner while the other is a more of a passer?  Do you think Schmitz might go with a qb rotation or is he going to pick one guy and go with him?

I'm not concerned about Wooster's defense...the Scots typically field a solid defense year in and year out.  I'd be concerned about the first few games with so many new faces (a lesson learned the hard way by Wabash fans last year...it can take a few weeks for a talented but inexperienced defense to click), but I think once we get into October they'll be a typically stout Wooster defense.

I'll be interested to hear how the Scots look against B-W tomorrow...keep us posted!

Medicine Man - What? How do you know they'd be ridiculed? It's important for fans of the lower echelon teams to speak up.

I think you're selectively picking a few posts from a few individuals and then painting Wabash with a broad brush. Check the archives. I LOATHE the broad brush and upbraid my fellow Wabash posters on a consistent basis when they've drank the Creighton Kool-Aid a bit too much (though that brand of Kool-Aid is MIGHTY tasty).

But of course cherry picking posts can allow one to prove anything. I can prove that a cat is a dog by cherry picking facts.

Oh, and calling Schafer "Elway" is giving some respect. It's not like we were calling him "Billy Joe".  Those would be fightin' words.
