D3 Poster: No idea on Parker. He was listed in the program as the starter.

At halftime I sang a rendition of  Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me... :)

TT: I need advice.......Woo is 10th in the standings. Does an oxygen mask drop from above???.... :o

Looking forward to the home opener against Waynesburg. The band and pipers always provide an excellent show... ;)

In your "Weird Stat of the Night," Witt's box score says that both Huffman and Assman threw for 112 yards.

And, on a side note, Mount Union.  Wow.

What kind of offensive set did OWU go with? I was told that they had gone to some type of power I. Looks like it was Hymes left, right and up the middle.  What happened to the freshman backs they had a couple years ago? When they went 7-3?  Ever since I visited that huge Selby Field, I have kept my eye on them, especially when Wooster plays like they did today.

I am listening to the Witt Cap game.....

I was at the Wabash Wheaton "game"....The report above is accurate.....

Bright spots for Wheaton....

QB Ullrich is very athletic and makes plays
#12 Ittersagen DB has speed that kills.....He shuts down a pc of the field

Bright spots for Wabash....
No serious injuries
Defense was potent......but not flawless yet and on the field a long time in the first half
OLine gave Huff time.....am sure that will just get better

I posted some thoughts on the wabash/wheaton scrum on the CCIW board.

one thing I found interesting:

the Bash punt return team was on the field and wheaton had a short punt. the return man is taught to yell something to his teammates to alert them as they block the ball was punted short and they should abandon the block and take evasive action lest the ball hit them unknowingly. the most common word used by the return man is "poison, poison, poison!!" loudly and with emphasis used to alert them something very bad is in the vicinity. The wabash return man has been taught to yell "Tiger, Tiger Tiger!.

Very good stuff. Got a laugh out of me.

Haha...that's great.  Thanks for posting your impressions from the scrimmage...I feel a lot better after reading the comments of yourself and Mugsy on the CCIW board than I did when I read the "score" of the scrimmage.

the "score" is meaningless. keep in mind it was 10-0 at half when it was 1s vs 1s. wheaton drove the ball well but still only had 10 pts. and wheaton completed 2 long passes w 25 seconds left in half to then kick a 45+ yd field goal as the siren went off. huff didn't have his two studs at WR. Bash will be fine. they are a very good team.

Things are not looking much better for Wooster next week. Waynesburg looks like an improving team, beating OAC Muskingum 28-10. But the real story is that they have a fresman running back Robert Heller that ran for over 200 yards and 4 TDs in the game. Here is an article on him. Looks like Wooster is running into some ringer running backs:

seinfeld,

Woo did ok with JCU's ringer RB.....he had 68 yards and a TD. What was troubling defensively was the lack of pass coverage and QB pressure......JCU had 316 yards passing. Offensively for Woo, there wasn't much there. I would guess Holter got the call at QB as he tends to be more of a scrambler than Parker and he needed to......he gained more rushing yards than Sheppard yesterday (of course he lost a chunk of that on 4 sacks). They had trouble with 3rd and 4th down conversions and were unable to capitalize on their single trip into the red zone. There are a number of areas that need development and improvement. Kudos to Friedman, the punter, who did his job very well.

Usee's post from the CCIW page...

Mugsy,

great summary of the scrimmage. I was also there and will add a few more comments:

-I don't put much weight on scores of scrimmages. circumstances like playcalling and injuries have a big impact on the outcomes.

-The wabash defense is really good, particularly up front. their front 4 is athletic and physical and their linebackers come downhill and make plays. they play with a passion and get after it. Pynenberg is fun to watch.

-Wheaton had a hard time running the ball but I give most of the credit to the wabash front 7. Wheaton's Ullrich is the real deal. He made the wabash db's look bad and they aren't that bad. Ullrich releases the ball so quickly guys look more open than they are. He made one throw from the left hash on a 17 yd out cut to the far sideline that is a D1 arm.

-I know Huff is a good qb. he has put up some unreal numbers against good competition. for whatever reason he was not a good qb today and I think that's as much the fault of his recievers as it was him (mugsy noted their best 2 recievers were not playing).

-Wabash plays with more spirit than any team in D3 I have ever seen. their celebration (on the road I might add) after the interception of Ullrich would have made someone think they just won a playoff game on the last play. I love it. We should all learn from their passion.

-Wheaton looked a lot better than I would have expected without the defensive player of the year as well as their leading tackler.

-wabash will be fine if they get their WR's back. their OLine is athletic and strong. Two very good teams IMO

Thanks for the comments, good to hear.  Hopefully Bash can get ready for FC in the opener and they will learn from this.  Luckily, I think a lot of the guys that did not play were held out for precautionary reasons so hopefully they are close to 100%.  Not sure why Huff did not play better.  He'll be ready.

Wow, bad showing for the NCAC yesterday.  I think it's time we all learn a lesson from Capital and start scheduling teams we can beat in the first week.

Sorry, no offense meant to Witt fans.  I know yesterday wasn't the result you were looking for, but if you averaged the score from the last few years, yesterday could be declared a small victory.

As for my Yeoman, I am extremely disappointed.  With 20 starters returning (their program says they're returning 12 on offense, last time I checked that wasn't exactly legal) they are essentially the same team as last year.  It's incredibly important for them to get a few wins early in the season, especially before they play Wabash and Witt back to back, both on the road.

seinfeld

I may have gotten a little carried away with Stove from JCU, but remember, he hasn't played football in at least two years, maybe three, and he is in his first year with JCU. I think he did a pretty good job, and by the fourth quarter, was running through Wooster's defense pretty easily. I think Stover won't be someone who racks up 150 yard games, but he is strong and will consistently move the chains for JCU.

Of course, you don't have to be a great running back to have success against Wooster's defense, if they are forced to be on the field all day. A running backs success against Wooster will depend just as much on how long our offense can stay on the field as it is what Wooster's defense will do.

ScotLass,

I saw that WR Peter Spachner from JCU had 5 receptions for 79 yards......how did he look...he played with my son in HS and was his counterpart at WR

ScotLass

"Petruziello and Stover make them a better football team," Wooster coach Mike Schmitz said. "And their wide receivers made the plays you expect really good players to make."

I'd say he did very well, although I was more focused on trying to figure out what Woo was doing.

Major Spartan - I can see them beating Denison for sure. Kenyon is decent, and Wooster will improve no doubt.

Kenyon put 57 on Grinnell last year and CWRU shut them down totally.  35 pts suggests the new DC hasn't made a difference yet.  Wooster better inmprove or they may just leave the fish in Cleveland.

Can anyone tell me what kind of  offense OWU is playing this year? Have they dropped the wing-t? Their qb still is carrying the ball a lot.
