the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to w in or lose.

More appropo to OWU's situation would be this nugget of advice from Sun Tzu regarding your enemy:

If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him.

Re: medical redshirts

I know you can play into your third team game and successfully petition the NCAA for a medical hardship waiver (technical term for medical redshirt) as evidenced by Jason Trusnik's 2005 season at ONU.  I am also pretty sure you can successfully petition for a hardship waiver from seasons in the past (ie. petition for you freshman year back as a junior) but it's no guarantee.  I imagine it is harder to do so for an injury in the past but I recall it being done so succsessfully in the past.

If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

You gotta love the "diddly poo" rant.  :D

You guys are giving me C&T flashbacks...

OWU has had two weeks to prep for Wabash before ('04 and '05) and it hasn't mattered.  The A-#1 problem for Ohio Wesleyan in a game against Wabash is that OWU refuses to try and exploit Wabash where they are weak.  If there has been one soft spot in the Wabash defense over the course of the CC era, it's been the secondary.  You can get yards through the air, but you've got to have the stones (and the players) to throw it down the field.  That simply isn't how Hollway coaches the game.  Option runs and swing passes won't get it done because Wabash's LBs are too fast for that sort of thing to work with any consistency.  This has been proven time and time and time again in these OWU/Wabash games over the last five years.

Your point is well taken, wally........

ScotLass,

I had Robert Baird for Microeconomics at Case back in 1991.  He was a cool old fart.

Did anyone on this board from Wooster ever take a class from his brother?

nike: OWU has one (1) NCAC title, and that was a co-championship with Kenyon in 1989. The "other" Osborn is Preston...a Jr DB with one (1) letter earned. Regarding 25 years......Mmmmm...I would have to know what you mean....

wally_wabash

I think 25 years refers to the length of Hollway's coaching tenure (if you count the Marietta years as well)...the point being that a quater century is a long time to coach without having won more than a share of a single conference championship.

I love a good coach rant! (Of course, I posted the Mora thing on my site yesterday in my mega You Tubing).

Oh, and speaking of rants - this is LONG but worth it at the end- it's on talk radio after last years' MSU - Notre Dame game. After the article, hit the play button:
