Darkside: Out of the over 1400 four year colleges and universities in the U.S. only 117 play college football at the highest level - Division IA. Duke is one of them.

DarkSide-D

That may be, But I'm saying that they regard other sports as more important.  Im not ripping on their program.  I am sure Duke is a proud program.  If you wish, I will strike the use of Duke, and just limit it to Georgetown.

Just because a team is D1 does not mean they are an awesome team.  There are many d1s out there that are flat out horrible.  Not to say Duke is.

Here is hoping Wabash scores early and often ... it is Homecoming and the Rhynes need to play in front of their parents and friends.

If I were Earlham I would not play Rummels. He will get hit often and hard and will agravate his healing injury.  Why ruin the rest of the season when there is no chance on Sat.?  By the By ... that is called Kenyoning .... as in Earlham "Kenyoned" Wabash by not playing Rummels.

As for "Tiger Down" ... I vary between concluding that Witt is in terminal trouble and then ... being affected by their past and thinking ... the teams they lost to were pretty good and they will jump up and bite someone ("Tiger Up")  ... just hope that is not Wabash.

My pick is Wabash for the conference ... it was before the season started and has not been diminished by the various team performances of conference competitors to date.  Olivet stinks and not putting them away early and often says something.  0- 3 and 0-3 are the other two echos.  BUT ... perhaps it will rain and rain and rain and Mud-O-Rama will come into play.

Vince McMahon

yes, and I'm sure if it does rain and Allegheny wins we'll go through another year of AC's poor standards and evil conspiracy to win through underhanded measures.  The drainage on the field has been significantly improved since then, so even if the playing surface is still not top notch, we shouldn't have to witness another mud bog like the one in '03.  Yes, I know you were just joking, but don't think I'm foolish enough to believe we won't hear about that muddy field if Gheny wins with a single drop of rainfall.

OWU put out a press release that Cisco Clervoix (gotta love the name-All Madden, etc) is NCAC Player of the Week. I didn't find it anywhere else, but, congrats to a fine defensive player. GO BISHOPS

Here ya go Aueagle.  On the left side of that page is a link titled players of the week.  Click there and you see that your boy is in fact a player of the week.

My vote for NCAC defensive player of the week would have been for Mitch Fonseca, Witt's safety.  He led the Tiggers (that's right, I said it) in tackles for the third straight week.  That's a tough trick to turn.  :)

Obscure traveling trophy alert!!!                         Obscure traveling trophy alert!!!
I've read just a very little bit about the Fish Stringer...can you Wooster guys give us a little history about this thing?  Where did it come from, how long have you been playing for it, who leads the Stringer Series, is it a really big deal, etc.....inquiring minds want to know....

CPA,

Thanks for inadvertently pointing out a flaw in our software. For some reason the last team in the poll got cut off. Wabash got one vote from D3football.com voters.

I'll look into it.

Baird Brothers Trophy: One of the most unique trophies, as noted by Sports Illustrated in 1995, in college football rivalry games is presented to the winner of the Case-Wooster game. It is a golden fishing stringer that holds carved bass fish, named the Baird Brothers Trophy after its creators. Bill and Bob Baird were long-time economics professors at Wooster and Case, respectively, as well as avid fishermen. The winning team adds a fish, which symbolizes some aspect of how that year's game was played. The tradition began in 1984, and the trophy currently sports a flounder, a carp, a bluegill, a pike, a walleye, a rainbow trout, a catfish, a sturgeon, a sucker, a crappie, a muskie, a sheepshead, a gar, a largemouth bass, and a smallmouth bass. Since 1984, the Scots are 11-6 against Case. The Spartans won the Baird Brothers Trophy the first five times, while Wooster has prevailed in 11 of the last 12 meetings, including eight-straight following last year's 49-7 rout. Prior to the modern era, the Scots were a frequent opponent from 1902-45 of both Case Tech and Western Reserve. Case Tech compiled a 26-13-4 advantage over Wooster, and the Scots were 9-8-2 all-time versus Western Reserve before the two schools merged into one.

As stated on the Wooster web site, http://athletics.wooster.edu/fb/thisweek/default.php

Very cool stuff.  How big is this thing?  I'm guessing that you got your hands on it once or twice DD.  Is it important to the players?  How do you decide what kind of fish to add to the stringer?

DarkSide-D:

Thanks for the info on the fish stringer--it is good stuff, and a part of what makes college football fun and competitive.

DarkSide-D

Scotty,

There is a new thread under general football, it discusses recruiting in division III.  It may be of interest to you.

Wally,

The Baird Trophy is pretty cumbersome in that it is a giant stringer.  I have a picture of it around my neck, and it touching the ground.  It is probably between 10 and 12 feet in length, if it is disconnected (not connected to itself by its ends).  As far as how the trophy is viewed by players, I can't answer for everyone.  For me personally, I wanted wooster to have it.  Both because I viewed it as ours, and that it meant we won the game.  Typically it was just an afterthought to the game.

Any other Scotties that care to comment on the Baird trophy?

wally_wabash

I guess what I'm trying to get at is this...is there a difference emotionally between your standard practice week and Stringer Week?  Is Stringer Week something that is always in the back of the team's mind, or is this rivalry really not that big of a deal to Wooster?  That is to say, is it just another game for you guys or is it more important than that?
