If your team plays WashU at WashU, you play the game on Francis Field where the 1904 Olympics occurred. If your team plays Chicago at Chicago, you play the game on new Stagg Field on the campus where old Stagg Field had been - the site of the Manhattan Project. If your team plays Wesleyan at Wesleyan, you play the game on Andrus Field, the oldest (1881) football field still in use as a football field . If your team plays Williams at Williams, you play the game on Weston Field, the oldest (1875) athletic field currently used for football. There must be certain claims for places like Centre (Bo McMillin and the Prayin' Colonels) and Sewanee (charter member of the SEC). What about Nixon and Whittier? I don't believe Coolidge (Amherst) played football. Garfield (Williams) attended college before football was devised. Etcetera, etcetera. No active site seeing required.

You left out Ronald Reagan, who played football at Eureka College (though I don't know if they still use the same field).

frank:
Great and interesting history review - thanks.  That experience of playing on historic fields is one of the tangent aspects that always was a thrill for me during my playing days.

Mr. Ypsi:
Eureka still plays on their historic football field McKinzie Field, which is where Ronald Regan played.  I believe his brother played there at least one year also (have to go back and check Eureka's athletic website in the history section).  Although a very small college with small enrollment, Eureka's campus has a nostaligic and historic feeling - something really neat IMO.

If you play on the Mountain at Sewanee, where the hotties still wear dresses to games, you play at McGee Field, the oldest football field in the south (1891); if you play (played) at Colorado College, you play(ed) at Washburn Field, the oldest football facility west of the Mississippi. ;)

D3_DPUFan:
Thanks for adding to frank's list and reminding us of these two also!  Very neat, but again, sad that CC has thrown that historic aspect away.

BTW, speaking of CC, does anyone know the status of the movement for reinstatement of football there?  Haven't heard anything of recent.

Oops!  frank already beat me to it in looking up the history of historic McKinzie Field at Eureka.   See his post regarding this over on the OAC board (which he probably meant to post on this board!).

There have been rumblings of going DII...but I'm sure if that happens, it won't be for a while. Tough for CC to work as a DIII school...just don't have anybody relatively close to play so they have to fly everywhere,,,they are DI in hockey and I think soccer, so maybe DII is in their future at some point. Beautiful campus and setting and some pretty nice facilities.

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but the CC administration really handled this poorly...waiting until the spring to announce the intention to drop football. I feel especially badly for the players and coaches...and CC hosed all of the other teams in the conference as well from a scheduling standpoint.

Wooster will open 2010 and 2011 with B-W.  Will JCU and CWRU switch off with them for 2012 and 2013?

Wabash travels pretty well in the NCAC ... attendees at games be they football or basketball include - after parents and relatives of players - a goodly number of alumni and friends who root for the LGs.

Question:  When DPU travels to Texas or other "fly to" places or even long bus trip places, what is the attendance?  Does the distance autstrip those who might otherwise attend?  My sense without spending a loit of time looking it up is that DPU - similar to Wabash - has significant Indiana support and support of the immediate surrounding states.

I know our footballers enjoy the Wabash support at away games and it is a 12th and and 13th "man" sometimes.  Wabash and Witt comes to mind verses DPU and Trinity.

Is this something which has been overlooked ... or matters?  It does to me ... that , if I am so motivated, I CAN (except for that Gheny trip) spend the Saturday and see/enjoy the LGs and a good game (delete "good game" from Kenyon and Denison ... but good campuses neveretheless.)

I know Wooster will play B-W in 2010 and 2011. My guess is that they will replace Waynesburg on Wooster's schedule. I suspect Case will stay on Wooster's schedule for a while, with the NCAC-UAA agreement. Plus, Wooster has been playing them forever.

Wabco-
I have wondered about the same thing.  It may be great for the team to travel to other parts of the country to play but how often do the parents/family get to make the trip to see the game?  Does that carry any importance to the athletes?

When I was at Wabash the college had just withdrawn from the Indiana Collegiate Conference and started playing an independent schedule.  My parents would go to a Friday night game at a high school where my brother coached and then get up early Saturday to go to Hope, Albion, Centre, Wash-STL, Kalamazoo, etc.  I believe about the only trip they did not make was to Oberlin.  At that time that was about the longest trip the fb team made.

It was fun to be part of the fb program but it was even better that my parents got to share in the fun in actually being at the game rather than listening on the radio or waiting for me to get home to find out the score (no such thing as the internet yet).

Attendance is usually not very good when you get outside of Centre & Sewanee.  Pretty good contingent makes the trip to both of those, but once you get to like Hendrix, Millsaps, and Trinity/Southwestern, it can get pretty ugly.  Football's obviously better than some of the other sports, but they sure don't travel as well anymore now that Rose-Hulman isn't in the conference anymore.

I should add that the attendance, or lack thereof, isn't just a DePauw issue - it's a conference-wide issue.  I know that's not earth-shattering, but an important point nonetheless.  Nobody travels particularly well in any sport.  When even Trinity or Millsaps comes to Blackstock for football, they might bring a fan base of somewhere between 25-75.

I don't doubt that Wabash fills the home side of their football stadium better than DePauw, but I am certain that they do a considerably better job of filling the visitor's side, too.  You're hosting Witt who comes with a few hundred, we're hosting BSC who comes with 40.
