Short is right that DeGrand was second in the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year voting last year. If he was a senior, he probably would have won it. And since when are judgments made on players based on one game? Based on the one-game evaluation, you could justify a dozen players who could be player of the year.

Reminds me of a discussion a couple of years ago when a Wooster poster said he thought Pynenberg was overrated based on a game he saw him play. Several Wabash posters corrected him and explained he was one of the best linebackers in NCAC history. The Wabash posters were probably right. Not sure this situation is any different.

That's fair and I should have mentioned that my sample size is obviously much smaller than you guys that get to watch DeGrand play every week.  But again, in the two games that I've seen McKinley play against Wabash, his team has nearly beaten the LGs and he was a big big big reason why on both occasions.

You're not going to go wrong with either of these players.

The artificial turf is being put on the field at Wooster.  It appears that it's still being secured; hopefully, some photos will be available by the end of the week.

Did the turf at Byron P. get pushed back another year?

There's no denying their history. But it's just that. History. It amazes me how much that history translates into the perception of success today.

That's one of the many reasons I will be rooting for Washington State against Notre Dame this October in my seat at the Alamodome.

History can be repeated and lack of success overcome within 5 recruiting classes.

No doubt it can. It just seems like every year is the year that ND supposedly gets over the hump. And then it's not. Maybe everyone should stop talking about it happening and wait until it does happen. That's all I'm saying.

Couldn't agree more.

BTW on the ESPN 50 in 50 on Wisconsin today, Wisconsin-Whitewater got a mention with video...and a telephone interview with their coach...some DIII exposure...

Short of Urban losing his mind and taking that job, the glory days of ND are over.  The things that made ND football a huge attraction (most notably television exposure) are no longer exclusive to ND.

Notre Dame was a huge attraction way before the arrival of television. At any rate Notre Dame had a very long, very high quality run which will be very difficult for others to match or exceed in the future.

Well, except that Michigan is way ahead in all-time wins.  (Despite 2008. :()

ND once had a monopoly on Catholic fans.  I just don't think they have the mystique anymore.  Plus, they suck! ;D

Well, there is that 47-game winning streak by Oklahoma....

Notre Dame was Oklahoma's last loss and first loss bookending that streak (oh, and a tie after the Notre Dame loss...)

Now, of course, it'd take an act of God on a grander scale than finding the Nag Hammadi library to get teams like that to play each other in the regular season.

Yeesh.

On a personal note, I'm taking a 3-week medical leave / sabbatical. Doctor says no cell phone, no internet, no work. (No phone, no pool, no pets...)

So I'll see yas in August.
