BashDad... the comment to the Star article is still there.

Sure looks like a "quit or be fired" type deal, doesn't it?

On the surface, yes, but I'm still not sold that's the only thing that is going on here.

Wes, for the record, the football players do have to pay for the sportswear they get.  The first 2 years, it was New Balance gear.  The coaches designate a package - shorts, tee shirt, warm up suit, sweats, etc - and we pay for it.  The parents can choose similar stuff or there are other items offered.  We wrote a check to New Balance the last 2 years in the neighborhood of 500 to 600 with about 150 or 175 for the player's packet.  This year the sportswear is offered thru a third party and it's Adidas brand sportswear.  The players packet is charged directly to our DPU account just like tuition.  The parents can go on the website and purchase other items.  Seems to be a much better set up and this company has guaranteed on time delivery.  I haven't asked my son if he has received his packet yet.

Any word from around the league on how the camps are going?

I do not know anything about the situation at DPU or the contract with New Balance but it is not unusual for the vendor contracts like these to provide that the program (whether it is run by a School or Club) receive credits for the sale of sportswear to players, parents and fans that could then be used to outfit coaches in gear or even purchase equipment.  As a result, a coach or program does have some motivation to require more or more expensive gear so as to maximize the credits.  It would be rare for the contract to provide for a cash payment to the coach though and, like others, I would be surprised if requiring too much gear would be the reason for a termination.

I may have misremembered 2004, then.  I don't recall that.  Regardless, from your scenario, it still seems unlikely that something shady could have occured there.

DePauw football subject of Michael Pointer's column in the Indianapolis Star this morning...

Thanks for the input DPU. I haven't entered my 2 cents about the story because you & Wes would be all over me. I think I could have added something that wouldn't be sarcastic, but it's hard when the subject is DePauw. You two guys have been bricks and kept us all honest. Hopefully BreckinridgeBear will stay on his own self-created site, and not bother us as we find out about football games. Your post about DPU's freshman numbers exposes lastest taunt about
a"Real university". Turns out all DePauw has besides a liberal arts college like us (with girls) is a music school. I always thought when I was down there that the "University" referred to a Nursing school, so well- to- do young ladies could position themselves to marry doctors.   Good fortune to you Dannies in the SCAC, but not further. GET THE BELL!!!

Here is what "word on the street" has returned to me:

Whatever Matt Walker did either: 1) violated a written or understood policy(not a personal bad deed at all) or else 2) a new  president exercised some sort of "I am in charge here" (hmmm . that has happened before) which caused a conflict which Matt could never win.  The fact that this occurred a week before football camp was to start with a sudden excising ... leans toward a sudden clash of a new sheriff with a very popular and successful headstrong citizen.  Result:  DPU and its Darth Vaders and Matt reach an agreement  (one-sided - life insurance policy-esk) that Matt immediately cease as coach and leave the premises with no notice or talk to anyone on DPU payroll or student body or "other".  The arrangement (the school has experience in this ... having done it poorly the last time) involved a cash settlement/buyout/severance and provided (signed by Matt and a school rep ... read: lawyer) to get the severance Matt has to keep his side quiet as will the Darth Vaders for DPU.   Failure to abide - in the event of Matt means no severance and possible suit by DPU (probably not) and in the event of the Dannies possible suit against the school (Hey ... we have been there before) if the Dannies talk.

Investigation from the C-ville end reveals that no one on the relative of Matt side will say anything other than to remark they can say nothing and follow it up with it will be a cold day in hell before the Dannies get any further contributions.  Matt for his part is MIA.

Unless someone cracks the Dannie side, I suspect we will not know.  Except from what I have been able to determine, the moral badness thing it is not.  Most probably he was getting dangerous as a young popular person/coach, was headstrong, causing some strain on the system, and was working for otherworld types not known for their interpersonal communication skills or even real world views.  A bad combination ... which calls out:  YO ... DPU Heads of Baseball and Football ... keep your resumes up to date.

I've caught wind of that, too, wabco, but I'm not certain that's quite it.  I've heard from a source very close to the Walker family that has spoken strictly off the record about a slightly different scenario from what you've posted above.  They've asked that I not publish that until I hear it from somebody else, though.

I still don't have a why, but I've got a how.  I'll keep efforting.

Either way, I'm getting really tired of the DePauw administration flexing its muscle on this stuff.  He's a good football coach.  Get over your stupid insecurities.  I don't think Casey is like this.  I don't think he's the guy that's going to throw his weight around on this.  I still think it was somebody else.

That is something I hadn't thought about until your post Wabco.... Money makes people shut up.

Many evils have been hidden for years behind the cash settlement with a gag-order.

I feel the worse for those players that had gotten so close with Walker and were playing very well under his leadership.

some of what you write, wabco, is plausible....but as has been said by others, we may never know exactly what happened...at least not for some time. I would also agree with those who have said the team and the staff have moved on and it is not an issue in the least (as Wes and others have said, more an issue to the adults). This team is wrapping up what has been described as a "tough" camp with "high energy and lots of intensity"... we'll see how things are soon enough where it counts...on the field.

QuoteI don't think Casey is like this.  I don't think he's the guy that's going to throw his weight around on this.

Totally agree, Wes...no reason for him to. And outwardly each had expressed goog things about the other on numerous occassions.

Nice effort, by the way with the video...well done.

Any scrimmage updates?

Wabash's intrasquad scrimmage is happening on Saturday.  I'm sure there will be plenty of chatter here after the fact.  I'll be tweeting from C'ville during the action on Saturday afternoon for anybody who wants instant observations.
