I may be in the minority, but I think in a game against a team like UWW is precisely the time to have your qb selling out for touchdowns.  It's unfortunate that Huffman took a nasty hit and was knocked out of the game, but if that sort of thing is going to happen (and it is...this is a violent game), I think it's best that it happen trying to win a regional championship than have it happen in the third quarter of a game against Denison.  There is no tomorrow in the playoffs...that's when you want your money players carrying the load.

Oldtiger, I'm just curious why you would put the word "tackle" in quotation marks? It's often difficult to determine just what a person means by a comment and I didn't want to jump to any conclusion without asking.

maripp2002, it wasn't a stretch play or at least it didn't look like one.  It appeared to be a quarterback draw.

From my view.... there was nothing dirty about the tackle.   Football is a violent sport and helmets are going to hit other helmets.   Huffman had tucked himself and was heading into the line when the two defenders came in off the edge with speed.   The fact that both defenders met at Huffman virtually at the same time was what (IMHO) delivered the violent outcome.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

I call it a "stretch play" because every time that Wittenberg ran it in the Trine game it was off tackle, and the QB would essentially just sit in behind his o-line and wait for a hole to open, often just stretching it down the line until there was an opening. I think of that as a QB draw-stretch. No fake, follow your blockers to the first open hole, often takes you to the outside.

Admittedly, I didn't get to watch the Witt v. UWW game, so it may be something altogether different that they ran. But, I kind of doubt that, because they ran the play at least 6 times against Trine. As to wally, I agree you want your players selling out in the playoffs. I guess what I mean, I don't really like that play no matter who calls it, unless you have an option/running QB. If you're a running team, with a pocket/drop back passer, use your fullback or halfback. I mean, you have a 1200 yd gainer in Weber and an oline that can make holes. I suppose part of me, just thinks of Hudson's long gangly frame running straight up, and I always get a little nervous. Without a doubt, Huffman is a better runner, but he still has that tall lenghthy frame, and it just doesn't look like it could take a really solid hit. I don't know hindsight is 20/20.

At any rate, congrats to Wittenberg on a truly amazing season, next year is looking like a dogfight in the NCAC. Also, good look to UWW,  Linfield looked tough against St. Thomas, but St. Thomas didn't do themselves any favors. If Wabash, then Wittenberg, can't win, at least someone from the bracket can. Go get em "Wakefield Warriors", just kidding, good luck to the UWW warhawks.

Vince Kehres's wife (an old friend from High School and Capital) posted this on Facebook:

Vote for VK for D3 coordinator of the year:

Interesting that 2 of 3 choices are MUC grads- VK and Zebrowski and that all 3 have ties to Ohio with Waddle from Witt as the other candidate.

You can all vote for Waddle, but I posted to the OAC and WIAC boards as well. :)

I did.  AS he should be.  Nice year from the Witt Defense.  As I introduced the post by mentioning VK's wife and copying her facebook post, I didn't want to make it seem like I was here trying to get you all to vote for him (that would just be silly), which is why I added the line "you can all vote for Waddle if you like..."

Just wanted to make sure you all knew about it.

Huge congratulations to Evan Isaacs (Wabash OL) who was named to the AFCA All-America team!  Great guy, who has overcome multiple knee injuries.  Congrats also to Eddie Vallery of Witt, and Dan Whalen of Case (still high on my list after his letter to Coach Raeburn after last year's playoff game).

Wow. That was a surprise. They just were 6-4 in 2008. Perhaps Denison was tired of the stagnation?

Interesting move by Denison for sure.  But to be fair, in Fletcher's 10 years at Denison he had just three seasons of .500 or better and five times won just two league games.  Maybe it isn't realistic or even part of Denison's athletics plan to be a football powehouse, but I'd think that a decade is long enough to have made your team be consistently better than Kenyon/Oberlin/Earlham/Hiram/OWU and that just isn't the case.  What can it hurt for Denison to try a fresh approach?

That being said, I don't think that Denison is the place most in need of a coaching change in this league.

It's now been a few years since the upgrade of the facilities at Denison.  I'm wondering if the clock for on the field progress started with the upgrade, and now, 4 years later there's not been significant, sustainable improvement, so it's time to make a change?  I'm sure there were many factors involved in their decision, but their facility is no longer the barrier for recruiting it once was.
