Received my Wabash / DePauw DVD last night ... stayed up till 1 am watching it.  The good guys won ... AGAIN.  As comentator, Rob Doyle traded his old DePauw QB uniform in for one of a Dannie Cheerleader.  His comentary was lacking both sophistication and truth.  Especially in the second half when he kept pointing out how the Dannie running game was getting in gear.  NOT on the DVD I was watching.  The LGs did what they did all year ... in the second half especially, SHUT DOWN THE RUN.

The DVD kept referring to the "interim coach" for DePauw who took over under challenging circumstances.  Hmmmm ... what were they?  and  Where in the world is Walker?  Is it time for another coach in Dannie land?  Perhaps - given the Dannies history the last several years - their head football coach whould simply keep the moniker "Intrerim Head Football Coach".  DANNIES:  remember ... THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE !

Wally,

How do you assess the Raiders chances against UWW this Saturday?

How much of the QB situation with/without Rocco will change things for UWW?

Will UWW feel more confident or too confident?

I assess the Raiders chances against UWW the same way that I assess the Raiders chances against anybody in D-III: good.

If Rocco doesn't go and MUC is stuck using Cecil Shorts as a qb, then everything changes.  I don't think you can beat UWW unless your offense is two-dimensional.  If Shorts isn't a threat to throw (and I honestly don't know), then MUC is probably going to struggle to score points.

MUC and UWW have separated themselves from the rest of Division III.  Right now, I don't believe that there are any teams capable of beating either of these two...except each other.  I expect a pretty close and probably lower scoring game tomorrow.

I have followed the playoffs with the teams assigned to be beaten by UWW and/or MUC ... for the umpteenth time.  I would propose the following proposition for debate:

Resolved the continued overwhelming dominance of the Division III football playoff tournament by MUC and UWW is damaging to the intended purpose of the tournament.

Now I suspect this will generate heat from some and absolutely from UWW and/or MUC ... but, as a serious topic for discussion: ... is the continuing overwhelming dominance (essentially to the effective exclusion of all other Div III schools) healthy for the playoff process?

Forgot to add to my earlier post:  NO I am not an Div IV supporter as is the President of Earlham.

I am simply facing up to a reality which appears to be becoming permanent or semi-permanent.  First, is it?  And then, if so, is that good, fine, acceptable, baloony ... whatever.

Robby Long has had the interim removed from his title, no doubt for winning the SCAC championship and his trip to the playoffs. They couldn't fire a guy who had the season he did.

Try as I might. I have been unable to unearth the reason Walker left. The closet thing I heard that it was trivial, in the over-all scheme of things.

Wabco -

You are seasoned enough to remember UCLA's dominance of NCAA hoops. Did it kill college basketball? Nope. I argue it helped make big time college hoops big time. Everyone wanted to tune in to the UCLA game, especially against Houston (when they had Elvin Hayes) or Notre Dame to see if the Bruins would go down or not. It also forced teams to compete against the Wooden standard at UCLA and not be content with just showing up in the final four.

The key was the NCAA unlocking the 'regionality' of the hoops tourney. Doubt that happens here. However, D-3 could use the Mt. Union / Whitewater matchups as on-going storylines. Yes, the other D-3 teams are supporting cast mates right now, but it's not a guarantee.

Isn't the intended purpose to crown a champion?
