The absence of updates on the field's progress is surprisingly frustrating.

Pictures! I want more pictures! Gimme more pictures!

ER just posted this at about 9:50 tonight on Twitter:
"Our new goal board came in today. The background is a crowd shot from the Bell game after Chamblee's TD! I'll post a picture soon!"

Awesome!!  :)

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

Bash posted some new photos online this morning, but I don't see that it includes the new board coach referenced in his Twitter post. And he hasn't updated anything on there today.

The latest photo album is excellent.  The playing field is going to look absolutely fantastic when the project is complete.  Never ever again with this:

I do like watching football in the mud, though. I loved playing in the mud too as a kid. But the grubs I could do without.

I like football in the mud as much as anybody, but I sure don't like Monon in the mud.

Football in the mud is not great.  If it were, schools wouldn't be tripping over themselves all in a hurry to install artificial surfaces.  Football in the mud slows the game down, turns the game much more into a game of chance than a game of skill, and isn't particularly safe for the players.  I'll admit that there is a certain novelty to a game in the slop....kind of a tough guy, throwback aura around a game like that, but it wears off for me after about two possessions when I realize that the players can't stand up let alone run precise patterns or execute a 5 step drop without slipping.  I'll gladly trade dirty jerseys for a surface that doesn't compromise skill.

Ask BashDad about '04 Allegheny.   I don't think that game was much fun.

Bottom-line for traditionalists,  playing in whatever elements are thrown at you is the only way and that is fine.

When the field becomes unsafe for athletic competition, that's another story.

With turf, you still have the elements in play; wind, rain and snow.  You just have a secure playing surface that allows athletes to still move and participate safely.

Anyone know if the endzones are staying the same green as the rest of the turf? At Olivet, our end zones are red.

BashDad

The initial plans were red, but it seems doubtful at this point; they've already sewn in the green.

As to the Chamblee "goal board," I'm confused by your enthusiasm, Tipps.  I'd guess it's one of those locker-room accouterments. Am I mistaken?

Hollet's looking suh-weet.

(By the by, someone from DPU was whining some months ago about how the conference re-alignment would damage recruiting, what with the lack of plane trips and all. While I have my doubts regarding that argument's validity, I will say that the perceived "product" of Wabash football after these renovations will almost assuredly be above that of Depauw. That's a problem for the tigers, I think. We'll see how it plays out.)

wally_wabash

Think it's probably for the best to keep the end zones green, else you wind up with pink end zones after a few years of sun-bleaching (a la Wittenberg's end zones on the old Astrocarpet).

Can't believe that DPU won't take some of that money that they aren't spending to fly all over the country for league games and spend it on some facilities upgrades.  Oberlin, Hiram, and (in 2012) DPU will be the only schools in the conference not playing on new-style artificial turf.  My guess is that Blackstock has a new surface by 2014.

That's a full recruiting cycle!
