7:00 Saturday Selby Stadium OWU vs. Wooster...Big game fellas...Biggest game in OWU history?

Can appreciate your excitement, bishop, but even if OWU wins, which I don't think they have a chance of doing, do not think it can be considered a "big" game.  OWU once again will not be playing for anything this year from all appearances.  I love the stadium, but a truly big game requires exitement and drama on the field.  Do not think you will have that until Hollway retires, although I really think that your game against Hiram will be your biggest game this year. Denison beat you 21-6 I believe and barely beat Hiram in overtime.  But unless the school can get a decent number of people in there Saturday evening, a game under the lights may draw even more attention to the scarcity of supporters your team has.  I did see where the school is trying to get the whole community involved and have a big turnout.  My guess is there will be a good number of Scots fans there too, because of the night game atmosphere and proximity of Delaware.  Plus I know a few Wooster folk like me, who will be checking out the mismatch in the  Horseshoe in Columbus for a while, then travel to Selby.
However, I have been wrong before.

Dave Harvey #11, QB - Some Little Giant - passed away yesterday, September 22, 2010.

Just to let you know what kind of a guy he was here is a little story he, himself, told at a '77 Stagg Bowl reunion banquet a few years ago.

For all the records he set at Wabash many of them have been broken in the following years.  But, he still has one on the record books that he knows will never be broken.  Of all his accomplishments, he did have a terrible day against DePauw the week before we would go to the playoffs for the first time.

Although the score of the game hides his blemish quite well, Wabash defeated DePauw, 30-6 on ABC regional TV that day.  However, "Harv" had 6 passes intercepted during the game.  His worst day in a Little Giant uniform.  Why does he think this record will stand forever?  Because in his words,  "No head coach these days will ever let his starting QB stay in long enough to throw 6 interceptions!

Rest in Peace, Harv and may God bless you and your family.
Repulse them, repulse them!  Make them relinquish the ellipsoid!

In 2004 OWU had a home game on the last weekend of the season against Wooster. Winner went to the playoffs. That game was bigger than Saturdays game is. Also, any game involving a skull is bigger than Saturdays game.

Biggest game in OWU history????????????????

I'm not  truely familiar with Bishop football history but, beating a very average Wooster team cannot be a big game.

bashbrother

He is excited about OWU Football which is great.   The program can use it.   I hope a big crowd makes it to Selby to see the game.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

It is a noteworthy game, but not a 'big' game.

A big game is like Wally posted. It means something tangible.

Also worth noting that the Wooster-OWU game is a non-conference game. Yes, it makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

I hope a lot of people show up, too and I will be rooting for Wooster.  Just do not think they will, based on OWU's recent performance.  If winning is not important to administration, then 0-3 and 0-4 and 0-5 starts are no big deal to all but a few.  And we are that few, because I bet just about everyone on here would love to have each NCAC team competitive.  In all honesty, the best games I have seen at Wooster over the years have been losses, dating back to Judd and Chris Cabot and Reggie Ray and then during the Sutton years, come playoff time.  But Wooster played their hearts out, competed and for the most part were well coached.  I will take that day in and day out.  That is why I get excited to see Hiram coming back.  I think if they beat OWU on the last day of the regular season, OWU higher ups will have had enough.

The OWU-Wooster game tomorrow is definitely a big game. Sure, "biggest game in history" might be a bit much, and while it may not have playoff implications, it is without doubt a big game for both teams. First night game in school history for OWU, who need a win to get the season going in the right direction (not to mention that the head coach has a "countdown clock" to the wooster game each year...) A win for OWU will have a big impact on the rest of the season, IMO. A win here, and they've got some 'mo and probably stay out of the cellar... a loss, and who knows? Talk about taking the wind out of OWU's sails (if there is any left...)

Same goes for Wooster. This is a young team that is improving, from what I've seen. A win this weekend, in a big stage, will be a huge boost in confidence for 1st time starters that took an early ego hit. A loss might put a huge damper on the development of those kids. A win, and the improvement continues. I think Woo will come out with a win in this one, but this is one of those "trap" games that might end up defining the season for the Scots.

Funny, I never saw the "countdown clock" in Coach Hollway's office during my entire 4 years there.  ;D

Good games around the league tomorrow...here's a few.

Witt @ Allegheny - It's the game these Gators have waited their whole lives to play.  Can they rise to the challenge?  If they're going to do it, now is the time.

Denison @ CWRU - Good measuring stick game for Denison to see if there is any substance behind their 3-0 record.

Chicago @ Wabash - Unlike the previous two opponents, Chicago's offense is going to be good enough to make Wabash pay for turnovers (5 in two games) and gratuitous penalty yardage (206 yards in two games).  We'll see if the LGs have tidied things up a bit this week.

I hope I can look across the field and see a ton of people in the home section tomorrow night.  I do like the fact that the visiting fans have their own bleachers at Selby. OSU will be crazy even with another MAC school.
The high school game tonight will have a couple thousand.  Still the most fun to play in and watch for me.

wally, while I think you're engaging in the classic Lou Holtz practice of talking up an opponent that you know (deep down) is inferior...I'd be surprised if Chicago stays within 20 vs. the LG's.  Putting up 56 on Concordia (Ill.) does not mean that Chicago has a good offense, and last week they were down 31-7 to Elmhurst before tacking on two TD's in the last five minutes.

I agree that CWRU-Denison is a nice measuring stick game; the next two weeks will show if Denison is capable of reaching 7-8 wins, or if they're a .500 team masquerading as a contender.
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

Late Report:
Comments on the OWU/Wabash game...
I liked how rb Yoder had a couple cutbacks & #29 Baker (I know-only 2 touches) on how he picked his holes & followed his blocks....your qb is young...needs to look-off db's (like OWU's Espinosa)...aahhh youth. He'll be fine, but, LG's need to continue to improve to tame the Tiger.....
Lots of problems in Delaware....The week before the LG game....At practice a player throws a tantrum and tells everyone where to go & walks off the field...oh, he played on Saturday....
No Emotion...No Passion...No Anything from the Bishop sideline...this  is by design..Something like a team takes on the coach's personality or something.
Parents, players, fans are not happy....But, look at the bright side...the lights are there to attract Ohio high school play-off games (like I said 2 yrs ago), the Bishops will play1 maybe 2 nite games a season...Lax & soccer are the main attraction for the nite...qb Espy & se Mogilnicki could be special...both have the right size...41 of the 79 on the roster are out-of staters....Better cash package for some and not others...In talent rich Ohio the Bishops lack recruiting....Talked to a Florida parent, they got many phone calls and came to a Ohio winter and the deal was done...Saves on a coach recruiting to a high school, eh? "Phone calls & foot lockers...is this why I'm here Danny?" OWU will open the pocket book on Selby face-lift, locker rooms & 2 FULL TIME assts...I think they live in the dorm rooms in Selby...nice. But hey, new look "O"....because someone figured out the old "O' was crap....Watched the coach get interviewed by the Delaware Gazette...it looked sad...defeated, spent....When your 0-3 and last in most NCAC stats, there is no-where to hide. nike asked if "H" will get fired during the season...I say NO...But with what I saw and heard last Saturday....who knows? COW-Nite the biggest? How about the 1971 Stagg-Western Regional Championship....Saturday under the lights will be cool...but, it's window dressing. I feel for the guys on the squad, the Sr's...
Our country and OWU are in the same spot....Big problems...Now the people are wondering if the men in charge really know what they are doing..GO BISHOPS

First day to post for me. I have been reading for several years. I won't be as entertaining as some of you guys but I can tell everybody is a fan of D3 football. The last several years I plan a season schedule and usually get to a game every week. I'm in Northwest Ohio and I get to all of the Heidelberg home games, and the weeks I'm not in Tiffin I get to OWU, Oberlin, and work other games in during the season.  I always get a trip in to Selby Stadium to watch OWU. The first night game tomorrow should be fun. I hope the Bishops get headed in the right direction. Maybe they can get a start tomorrow night.

Nice to meet everybody and I'll be following along all season.
