Wabco,

I believe it is official that both CJ Gum and Wes Chamblee are returning for a 5th year!  Although I sure would feel more confident if BashDad#84 would post it...  ;D

Bummer on the recruiting front losing Jonathon Horn's younger brother (Reece Horn) to D2 UIndy.  He and his QB from Cathedral have both signed to play there.   >:(  I really thought we had a good shot.

Congrats to the Wabash hoops team with a big win yesterday at previously undefeated Wooster!

So what injury qualifies CJ Gum for a 5th year?

Who is going to volunteer to tell CJ he can't play next year?   :)

But seriously...CJ only played a tiny bit of the first two games in 2007 and lost the rest of the season.  I think it was a knee injury, but it's been long enough ago now that I'm not 100% sure on that.

Correction: wasn't the FIRST two games, but he did only play in two games, both in September.  He did not play in Wabash's final nine games that season.

Gotta hand it to Franklin on going after
UW-W and Valpo for non-conference games.
If you want to be the best - play the best....
Just another reason Indiana football has come
so far...I can't wait for the  NCAC - UAA contract
to end...It will never happen, but, I've always
said, OWU should play Mount, BW, ONU........

I have to agree with you regarding Franklin (as I agree with that philosophy and always have - we've discussed that many times over on our MIAA board).  My only question is...would Franklin have done that if Adrian had not cancelled out of their game with them for this fall?  They probably would have, although for 2012 instead of now (in part, since the Adrian-Franklin game had only this year left on the contract).

Anyway, I hope you are doing well and "weathering" this cold front well!  What's the news, if any, from Shelby Stadium i.e. OWU country regarding their recruits?

formerd3db:
I won't comment on the "what-if's" on the Griz/Bulldog contract, BUT, out of the
13 open dates posted on D3, Franklin could have looked at UWSP, North Central (Ill), or Dubuque.
Information out of Delaware is always slow...I did speak with the HC at a CVC and an asst at a GCC school, both  in Cleveland. They did have players that have looked at OWU, I don't know of the final decision yet.
The Bishops lose 7 Sr's, and have 11 Jr's and 10 Sophs for 2011...and of course the
great freshman class that was promoted as;
"an incoming group of 55 players that head coach Mike Hollway calls his "best class of the last decade" ....
On the most recent posted roster I counted 43 freshman...The others must be on the JV team....I'll look to the spring game with much anticipation, because this should be the big break-out season for Ohio Wesleyan. If any intel leaks out on the Red & Black, I'll let you know....Pitchers & cacthers report soon, that means winter is almost over!

CJ tore his ACL in a red squad game his freshman year against the Dannies  >:( - very early in the season.

Thanks for your comments on the scheduling as well as the update info re: OWU and, yes, please keep me/us posted if/when you hear further aspects.  Hope you are doing well.

As you know, Wabash basketball coach Mac Petty resigned after many, many years of service and success.

Though, the hiring of Raeburn and other athletics coaches at Wabash makes me feel confident that the right man will be hired for the job.

The one thing about Mac was that he always encouraged two-sport athletes. In this day and age of football, that's rare. I'm glad the new regime at Wabash wants football players to do other sports if they are interested and able to balance class time and the other sports.

Wabash Always Fights!

That is always tough, although it seems to be more prevalent now with more DII schools in the Midwest region.  As we all know, the athletic scholarship $, even if only partial for DII (as compared to full-rides, of course) is an enticement for prospective student-athletes, particularly with the cost of the DIII schools having escalted in recent years even more, and also if the family had two son's that would be in college at the same time (obviously, I don't know about the players you mention, however, I'm assuming that perhaps they would both be at Wabash at the same time?  If that is/was tob e the case, unless their family qualified for significant financial aid, the choice in going with UIndy is understandable as well all know - assuming, of course, that a prospective player has the talent to play at the DIII level, which would be obvious or UIndy wouldn't have been looking at him anyway. ;D).

Some of us have discussed this dilemma in recrutiing for DIII i.e. the DII aspect on several occasions over on our MIAA board.  I can tell you that it has had a major effect in this for some of the MIAA schools with so many DII schools in the region, with perhaps the exception of Trine.  Regarding the latter, not sure why as they are in close proximity and Indiana doesn't have that many scholarship programs DII or NAIA as compared to our state or even Ohio to compete with, although as you related, there still seems to be a competitive asepct in that regard for some of the schools such as Wabash down in your area.

On the other hand, although there has been an increase in NAIA scholarship programs as well as some newer DII programs in Ohio and Michigan, still a recruit would be looking at "what other tangibles" those programs have to offer.  By that I mean (and putting aside that one would have the notoriety of being a "scholarship athlete"), would you rather play in a stadium (and the fan following) of the likes of Urbana and Ohio Dominican or...Wabash? ??? ;D  I think that choice would be easy, again, assuming one's family could afford the costs of attending a DIII school like Wabash, etc. ;)  However, everyone has to make their own choice and we all know that there are many other factors that are involved in making the decision (from academic programs, the campus, the town, fan following, perhaps even distance, etc., etc.).  Anyway, just thought I'd weigh in on your post for some discussion - after all...it is the off-season. ;D  I would, however, be interested to hear your (and/or your colleagues here) own thoughts/opinion as to how the DII and/or NAIA scholarship programs have perhaps impacted recruiting oveerall for Wabash and other Indiana schools aside from this above particular case.  Thanks.

While we wait for spring ball or better, kick-off 2011...
I thought I'd find some of the best D3 stadiums. I didn't
have to look to long when Rensselaer Polytechnic came
to mind. A great, modern stadium that has the look &
feel of the "big-time". The Engineers have a solid program,
because Joe King roamed the sidelines for 22 season....

Two of the nicest I've been to are in Virginia:
Hampden-Sydney
And Shenandoah, though oddly I can't find a good photo of the stadium.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

Ryan Tipps,

When you can visit Mount Union Stadium. It is the oldest college stadium in Ohio, and one of the nicest place to see a game! :)
