DePauw is a great addition to the NCAC, in all aspects, academically & athletically...
and as I read about Tom Mont, I thought that as great as it is to have them in the
conference, we also celebrate their past and those that made the Tigers what they are.
My Best to the Mont family and all Tigers

It would be highly unlikely for Wabash to fly its Mall American flag at half staff for a Tiger, but if anyone from down south is deserving, it would be Coach Mont.  Great, and funny, man; great coach.  Noble opponent.  RIP "Tommy."

Pete left a lot of good memories behind him at Wabash, and has really moved up the ranks. Good for him!

FYI...this is from Inside Higher Ed piece on the DIII issues as the NCAA' begins its annual convention today in Indianapolis.

Division III

The NCAA's only division that does not offer athletic scholarships to its players will also consider proposals Saturday that would allow for more electronic contact between coaches and recruits. As in Division II, legislation will be approved if a majority of members institutions want it in place.

At this point, there are two proposals on the table that would lift the ban on text messaging as a recruiting tool, but one that includes social media is expected to be withdrawn because of worries it would be too intrusive for athletes. In proposing the legislation, Division III leaders said text messaging has become a communication crutch for students, who might not respond to e-mails or phone calls, and permitting it in recruiting would likely allow for more interaction, but this "wouldn't be the communication on which relationships are built." If the rule is approved, all forms of electronic communication would be subject to the same regulations: unlimited in quantity and timing.

Another proposal would prohibit voluntary strength and conditioning workouts one day a week during the off-season and on in-season off-days, but that proposal faces opposition from some of the division's governance groups, including the Management Council; some have questioned whether the rule would be enforceable.

Athletes who suffer a season-ending injury would face a heavy penalty for practicing with the team during the season, if one piece of legislation passes: they would have to use a season of eligibility. But again, most governance groups oppose this proposal, in this case because it would apply only to a few athletes.

any news on the OWU coaching search?

aueagle

Ohio Wesleyan has not released any information on the search. But, there is word on a Ohio native
with experience at all college football levels....solid offensive mind with an outstanding D2 resume.
I would think Prez Rock & Ad Ingles have some-what of a short list by now. With the coaches conventions
wrapping-up, spring ball just around the corner and recruiting being key for the Bishops: to set the tone
for the new era....This can't drag too long.
I know of a few Ohio high school HC's that submitted...they have to be a long-shot...no college experience.
Good intel on Germano, ADL70....an Ohio Wesleyan guy has thrown his hat into the ring for the job in Delaware.

That's good to hear. Hopefully we will hear something soon.

I think OWU making the right hire for the long term is a bigger priority than rushing somebody in to maximize recruiting time for this very next year.  This is a bigger move for OWU than one recruiting class in the spring of 2012.  This is about the recruiting classes of 2013 and beyond.

Also remember that in 2007, Chris Creighton left Wabash sometime around Christmas and it wasn't until sometime around mid February before Coach Raeburn was announced as the next HC at Wabash.  Things have worked out fairly well there.  I realize that the situations are quite different, but the point is that, if you're serious about getting to a league championship level at OWU, it's worth taking an extra few weeks to get the right guy.  It'll pay off in the long run...and you'd be surprised what the right guy can do even with a shortened recruiting period.

I have an idea, but I've gone out of my way to leave those folks alone this year.  Pretty petty stuff when people actively seek me out to ding me when I've been quiet entirely here for a month and away from their domain for 10 months.  Whatever...I'm not losing sleep over it.

What's that you say, Herm?

Excellent point here.  While everybody is eager for OWU to be relevant in this conference again, let's make sure we can see the forest through the trees.  Don't screw this up by trying to salvage a recruiting class for a season that won't be relevant anyway.  Somebody out there is the right person for OWU football.  Getting them in place by January 15 or February 1 shouldn't be a priority in finding him.

Yeah, I think there's some serial karma snipers afoot. On days where I don't say anything I'm dinged too. Or day I don't say anything.

wally & wes have words of iron in the timetable for the Bishops. And on Jan 1st, I stated that
the new coach would be in-place by mid-February. I'll stick with the 14th of that month....or before.
