I'll join in the chorus of saying how completely befuddling and sad this whole thing is. Definitely hope they can get things back on the right track in Greencastle as soon as possible.

However, HOW IN THE WORLD DOES SOMEONE IN COMMUNICATIONS SIGN OFF ON THAT PRESS RELEASE???? Why in the world would you include anything more than: Coach Long has been dismissed. Coach Srnka will take over. National search to find a new coach will ensue, etc. etc.????

The quotes from Baker-Watson are pretty stupid. "We have been working with Coach Long since spring to resolve several administrative issues under his control. We made this decision to terminate Coach Long’s employment because he failed to take corrective actions in a timely manner."

They have to have a pretty strong paper trail to be able to back up that accusation. If I'm Coach Long I'm calling attorneys in Indianapolis for a potential lawsuit for defamation of character.

How do you make a decision like this three weeks into the season? Why would anyone ever want to coach the DePauw football team? Why would an alumnus ever give a dime in support of a university that seems to have no idea what it's doing in this area? Why would a kid ever decide to play there?

So many questions. Only time will tell if we get answers, but for now, incredible sadness. I feel for all Tiger fans tonight...except for the Wittenberg ones ;)

good question, wallyworld, about the language of the release.  I've never seen anything quite like it.  Usually those releases are just boilerplate:  "He's no longer with the program. . . .He's resigned. . . . etc.  The bit about since last spring is really tantalizing.  "Administrative responsibilities"--all coaches at DIII schools have them to one degree or another, sometimes referred to as "other assignments" or even denigrated as "secondary assigments."  But what could have been so egregious to get him fired after the start of the season, unless, as several have suggested, he blew a fuse.  Bashbacker 16, with you, Robbie always seemed a good person.  The new AD arrived from North Central College; who knows what new, different standards, expectations, rules are in place, or how they got along from the beginning.  The revolving door does no one any good, and unless there was something within the team and with the student-athletes, what must the players be processing.  The "Indiana Tigers," as the Witt radio broadcasters, referred to them, have Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh this Saturday.  I'm sure we will all be paying attention.

This is instant karma for years of listening to all of that junk about how soft this league is.  It is not rugged top to bottom, no.  But you don't just show up here and win this league.  There are some good teams and good programs that you have to beat to win it.

Well, no offense, but DePauw didn't just show up in any shape to win this league, and everyone saw it last year. This is kind of gratuitous.

DPU won their former league twice and were good enough to win it in 2005 had the Trinity game not been cancelled. They lost to Wabash all three of those years and went 0-2 in those playoff trips. Ignore the last two years. Even when they were good enough to win the SCAC they lost to us. And they didn't make any noise in the playoffs. And they didn't have to play Witt. I think Wally is just saying that league wasn't as much better than the NCAC as they thought it was.

"During the search process, Stevie demonstrated great enthusiasm and experience along with a vision for making DePauw athletics one of the premier programs in the nation," said Head Football Coach and Director of Student Athletic Recruitment Robby Long. "She will be a great leader, fan and advocate for our athletes, department and University as she builds on the great tradition of Tiger athletics."

Aside from the drama in Greencastle, the Wittenberg v. Wooster game is this weekend. I may have missed this, but is there any reason why this game is not being played the last week of the season?

Could be ... it's my understanding that a similar error was behind one of last season's Wooster-Witt men's basketball games being played on a Wednesday night in December.

The up-side for Wooster is that it's homecoming and a (relatively uncommon) home night game.  If the weather is nice, too, I expect a completely-packed stadium and a bunch more folks sitting on the hill.  Hopefully, the Scots can bring their "A" game (as they have the last two times that Witt came to Wooster) and be in a tight game in the 4th quarter.

A-MAZ-ING.  Stevie "Wonder" should become Stevie Wandering ... wandering somewhere else.  Anyone who has administration leadership responsibility and puts out such gratuitous damaging statements, damaging on so many levels ... should be sent "wandering".

Unless you can have faith in your AD as "having your back" against what is normal Dannie administrative leadership dysfunction, why would you go there as a football coach ... WHY? ... YOU CAN HEAR THE CLOCK TICKING YOUR TIME THERE AWAY AS YOU TAKE THE JOB.  Folks, the cancer is not in the football coaches/program ... it is in the "pancreas" ... the administration.  Stevie "BE GONE SATAN !" ... "BE GONE SATAN!".   The Dannies need an exorcism.  Until that happens there will be good and bad.  Both are the same:  1) the good ... it will continue to be be "Yum, Yum, Yum" time for the Little Giants when they play "womp the Dannies", 2) the bad ... it will continue to be will be Yum, Yum, Yum time for the Little Giants when they womp the Dannies.

It does make me (and I believe the olther Little Giants in this blog)  reflect upon and renew your faith in Wabash; its traditions, its common sense, its methodologies, and the "good faith for the betterment of the College" reflections of Wabash leadership before making decisions/taking actions ... AND ABSOLUTELY BEFORE  just gratuitously plunging a knife into the stomach of the institution STUDENTS AND ALUMNI care so much about, support, and want to make better. I understsand that, if Robby did something which was aggregious enough to require being addressed/action taken ... as has been done,  you do it.  BUT you do not then hide behind such sophomoricly poorly written announcement as Stevie Wonder has.

I say ... "off with her head".  That is the exorcism.  Then find a good coach (not too good a one ... not of the Reaburn caliber) and lets get on with it.  Dannie alums ... where are you?  Rise up!  Get this train back on track!  ake your facilities something to be proud of!  Give the money for it!  Demand common sense out of your leadership!  Wabash doesn't want this ... we want to whomp you when you are healthy.  You alums have some lifting to do.  Your leadership treated you as babies not to be trusted with the Rogers and then the Walker saga ... is this to be more of the same?  Unless there is a sea change in the way the Danny dysfunction works ... I fear you cannot come back.  As just one Little Giant faithful ... I want you back.  I really really really want to beat the tar out of you in every sport and any other competition ... academic or otherwise.  But in a certain (sick?) way ... I feel I can say all these anti Danny things ... but Witt (for instance) better not.  They have not earned the right.  Guys, for better or worse we all are a bit tied at the hip.  You taking a dagger such as you have and as ineptly delivered ... harms us.  Danny alums, arise ... fix this ... Stevie, will you please start your wandering, and lastly:  DEPAUW TO HELL, WE HAVE THE BELL!!!

OWU plays Case this weekend.
Case squeeked by Marietta. Started from behind, 0-10. Came back and built a good lead 26-10. And almost let it slip away to win 26-23.
Case Beat Hiram 35-0.
Then they lost to Frostburg St. It was close the whole Game.

How do you think the OWU will fare vs Case?

Well.  Under the lights, home opener at Selby with a little bit of steam behind the team after two road wins...yeah, I think OWU is going to have something for the Spartans this weekend.  I think it's going to be a good game in Delaware.

As a UAA fan, I'm a little nervous about this one.  OWU has looked very promising early and CWRU is clearly down at least one peg from the last five years (not that there's any shame in that).

Broadly speaking, over the last five years once could mark the UAA teams as demonstrably behind Wabash and Witt, about even with Allegheny and Wooster, and a notch better than everyone else in the NCAC.  This year I think we might see some of the NCAC's "other" teams post a few wins against the UAA.  Good sign for NCAC being more competitive, bad sign for UAA being clearly down this year.
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

The Tigers need to solve the problem in Greencastle....and, remember, it's bad for all of us in the NCAC.
I looked at the stats for Witt, Bash & OWU....The Tigers are 53% on 3rd down conversion and have the best
balance in rushing & passing. Bishops are only 84 yds/rushing per game, but the LG's are at 65.5.
The Red & Black are giving up 23 pts/game.
I don't know the Vegas-Line on the night-cap at Selby....but I think the boys from Cleveland better have their
track shoes on....GO BISHOPS

+1 Tartan,

I certainly hope that OWU is in the process of taking the steps required to get better and be more competitive with the top teams in the NCAC. If they beat case thethe middle of the schedule brings on Hiram, Depauw and Kenyon. Those 3 are winable, but we finish with Carnegie Mellon, Wabash, Allegheny and Wooster.

Looking at CM, they have handled 2 of the three teams they have played and the only team they beat in a close game is Grove City. That will certainly be tough.

Then we will see how we match up with probably the best team in the conference, Wabash. At least we get them at Selby. Hopefully we will give them a good game.

Finishing up with Allegheny and Wooster will show what we are made of. Last few years we have finished with Kenyon, Hiram and Oberlin. At the end of the season there was always talk of momentum going into the following year. Hopefully this year it will be more than talk.

Best case I think OWU may finish 8-2 or 7-3.
