What did ER think about last week:  I guarantee we see a different team tomorrow!  I also bet you he got his point across this week at practice...  Let's GO BASH!

Coach Raeburn's Comments
On the home loss to Allegheny:
"I thought we played awful in every phase Saturday. We were 1-of-4
on field goal attempts, we gave up a 40-yard punt return to set up
Allegheny's first touchdown, we were 14-of-32 passing, we had five
trips to the red zone and only scored one touchdown. We had guys
jumping offsides and running the wrong routes. Defensively that was
the worst we played all season. Our strengths on defense have been
stopping the run, pressuring the quarterback and getting turnovers.
We did none of those things Saturday against Allegheny."

What does "outcoached" mean?  This is a word that gets tossed around, almost exclusively after a team loses, that seems to serve as a catch-all for everything that didn't go according to the script in a particular game.  I mean, the coaches can't kick field goals or throw passes or catch passes or run routes or tackle the other team's ball carriers (Woody Hayes disagrees, but that didn't work out so well for him).  And in the case of last weekend's game, the most important coaching decision in the game (or at least which coach got to make that decision) may have been determined by the coin toss, which Allegheny won.  We talked earlier about some of the other tough coaching decisions that presented themselves last week, which I believe Coach Raeburn handled appropriately.  I'm not sure Wabash really got "outcoached" last week as much as they just never were really able to be in a position of tactical strength.

And really, I think we should try and define "outcoached".  For being so derogatory, it's a really ambiguous word.  It probably needs a more concrete definition if we're going to use it fairly.

Tomorrow is the biggest game this early in the season for our program in years.  A win would be huge, a loss devastating.

No excuses, we need to put our best players on the field and take care of business.  Play for the win tomorrow.

Last week showed us that a less-talented team (with respect) can beat you if you don't show up.. Tomorrow will be a battle, even if we show up.

WAF!

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

Whatever Wally, watch the game again.  If after watching it again, you cannot honestly agree that their coaches had their team better prepared for us then we did for them,  I will retract my comment........and replace it with some flowery "PC" comment.....but make sure to watch it.

Also, usually when a team with less overall talent beats a team with more talent,  they were out-coached in some way.  Not always, but usually.

I am confident that ER will have this team and this offense much better prepared tomorrow.

Not trying to pick here, bashbro.  "Outcoached" is a term that I've long wondered about.  It seems to be used as a blanket excuse for losing, which I don't think is always fair.  I'd just like to have some parameters in place so that we use it fairly.  I was in the stadium on Saturday, so I saw up close what happened.  I thought ER's comments before the game about what was key to winning were spot on.  Wabash didn't really do those things very well on Saturday.  So it wasn't a matter of the coaches not knowing what to do or what to prepare for...it was a bad game on the field.  Field goals didn't go through.  Passes didn't get caught.  Tackles didn't get made.  You can lead a horse to water and all of that.

I didn't get the sense that Wabash's game plan was poor.  Execution was off a bit.  If we want to lay at the feet of the coaching staff, I'm sure they'll carry it.  I don't think it's particularly fair in this case.

I'm trying to think of clear cut cases of "outcoaching" that I've seen.  Probably the 1998 Bell Game...DePauw chicanery aside, it was unfortunate that Wabash didn't do anything to counter it (send plays in with players, add a decoy signal caller, something).  I think Wittenberg had a super poor game plan against Wabash last year.  Doubly poor given that they had an extra week to get ready.  I could buy an "outcoaching" there.  Maybe against North Central last year.  No blitzes in the second half when Wabash was all throw all the time and already had their hands full with the down linemen.  Huge mistake there by NCC.  I think if we're going to call coaches to the carpet for being "outcoached" it has to be a fairly egregious strategic error or game plan.

Last week, I don't think qualifies.  I think Wabash had a solid plan and it didn't work out all that well.  I think Allegheny had a great plan as well...basically the same plan as last year when they had a lead in the fourth quarter and just couldn't quite close Wabash out.  Allegheny was definitely better prepared to play against Wabash, especially offensively, than most teams that Wabash plays are.  But I don't think Matlak was playing chess while Raeburn was playing checkers.

Not meant as a slight to the coaching staff.......it happens

Agree on the out-coached...lack of focus is about coaching!!!

Not surprised about Oberlin. Games get away from them in the 4th due to their lack of depth.
