Well there you go.  Timing is a little odd though, don't you think?

Maybe not, now that I think about it.  Chris Creighton resigned well into December to take another job.  Is Schmitz moving to another school?  Maybe an assistant position somewhere?  In any case, you guys are getting the shakeup you wanted.  Best of luck on the search.

Damn, that's kind of surprising news.

Maybe he'll have more time to work on his golf game.  :P  I don't frequent that driving range too often, but I swear, he was there hitting balls every time I was there?!

Oops!  Mr. Ypsi and davepi2 - what an idiot I am!  I blew the story on that one - the crowd was indeed, 52,000+ that day for Michigan Tech/Grand Valley, but it was at U of Michigan Stadium...

I thought that game was held at Michigan Stadium as I didn't think Eastern's stadium was big enough to handle 52,000...

So who's on deck for Wooster?  Seth Deurr immediately pops into my head.  He's probably seasoned enough by now to get a shot at a head job if he wants it.  I don't know what terms he left Wooster on to move to Tiffin last year, but I'd think he'd be a top candidate as long as things are copacetic between he and the college.

First I have heard rumors that the emu basketball team hosted and beat purdue and there was a tiny crowd for that game also.

Eastern did indeed beat Purdue:

Depauw is like an unsupervised little boy playing with silverware next to an electrical outlet. Seriously, why is hiring Bill Lynch a good idea? How is that rebuilding? They have a players problem--and all signs point to the fact that Bill Lynch will be a confusing recruiter, at best.  He coached up some athletes that were more or less evenly matched with Wabash, and then he left. Walker was probably doing all the recruiting anyway. Now Lynch's pitch would be: I promise I won't leave this time? GOOSE BUMPS. SIGN. ME. UP.

If Depauw doesn't hire the Monmouth coach, the administration is even more out of touch than we thought. Seems like an open and shut situation to me. For the good of our unbalanced rivalry, I hope that happens.

Agree.  Admittedly I don't know anything about the alum at West Point or the guy from Dartmouth, but Bell seems like the guy who has proven he can do good things as a head coach in Division III for a long period of time.

The first guy Wooster should contact is Brian Wright, now an offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic. Grew up in Wooster, went to Wooster High and the College of Wooster.

Yeah they should.  FBS coordinators are in that zone where they may have outgrown D-III HC jobs though.  Still, can't hurt to call the guy up and check his level of interest.

good luck scots next year.  Best tradition I have seen in person is the scot team entrance. Texas A&M has a couple like the four way cross through and the 12th man but the team running on the field with the pipers is the best. Also nobody plays a better Scotland the Brave then the wooster marching band. Hopefully next year it will go with a winning season.

Hilarious on the silverware ...correct read on all of it...

I don't think the Florida Atlantic coach is going anywhere. They're moving to C-USA, the administration likes Pellini and the offense moved from heinously moribund to just mediocre this year.
Wabash Always Fights!

I can only add this.  When DePauw hired Lynch, the word was that he had strong connections in Indianapolis, particularly in the Catholic schools, and would be a formidable recruiter.  This, from the Wabash coaches at the time.  That he left and didn't have the chance to build a program--could he have?  I don't know where the idea comes from that he can't recruit--because he didn't/couldn't at a higher level?  There may be a difference between capturing the few Indiana seniors capable of playing DI and getting some of the rest (?)

are you doing research for the newspaper? or does the writer read these conversations?
he sounds like you seinfeld!!
only just slightly more likely to blame whole coaching staff!

Funny, I was thought to be a part of the NCAC office a couple of years ago when I posted that DePauw would be joining the NCAC a couple of weeks before it happened. I just keep my eyes and ears open and try not to be a Wooster homer (but strong supporter) and that allows me to learn a lot of things.

I think a lot more people look at this board than we might think. I bet only 1 out of 100 people that actually visit this site regularly ever post, if even that. But I will say that not all of the stuff I posted were necessarily things I thought of first. Vogel, who wrote the story, is a recent Wooster grad who also wrote for the school newspaper, so he has his own connections.

Anyway, I know Wright is very much a long shot, but Wooster should take this opportunity to cast a very wide net. Wouldn't hurt to call. Sometimes these decisions are not completely made by the coach (i.e. the family, which in this case has three young children). There is definitely more job security in Div. III than there is at higher levels.

As for Schmitz resigning, I assume no one is actually buying this, or at least they shouldn't be. First, I know he was forced out, but don't want to say anything more specific for fear of getting something slightly wrong. And with something as delicate as this, it is important to have the story completely accurate. Plus, if you know Schmitz at all, this is completely contrary to his personality. Hence calling timeouts down two scores and the opposition has the ball about to score on you with under a minute to play.

I think Duerr is definitely someone that should get a look, if he is interested in coming back to Wooster. Again, I think it would be wise for Wooster to case a wide net to see what they come up with. If it is Duerr, or someone with a defensive background, it is absolutely essential that an experienced offensive coordinator with expertise working with quarterbacks (like Wright, damn if he wasn't at such a high and far away position) is brought in as well.
