Usee,

Great update thank you!  Ver interesting perspective.  #11 is Stella and that is great to hear.

Any comments con the 2 QB's that Wabash used in the 1st half?

I also realize Wabash has 2 full weeks l left to prepare and work out the kinks - ER will have them ready.

If you are a Wabash fan you could only be disappointed in the qb's in the first half. They had multiple short fields created by the defense (at least 5 possessions starting at midfield or better) and produced no points. Only 1 turnover and to Wheaton's credit I saw at least 5 passes that were on target broken up by good defensive hits/breaks on the ball.

To be fair, a Wabash fan would have the same description of Jordan Roberts, who is a POY type qb for Wheaton. He wasn't very noticeable yesterday either. I attribute all of this to early learning curves and excellent defense. The defense is usually ahead of the offense at this time in camp anyway. Tough to gauge whether the QB's are going to be good or not. I can't imagine any other qb's in D3 got a better look in a practice setting that the ones at McCully field got yesterday though. Great experience and teaching tool for both sides. This scrimmage set up has been a real win-win for both teams and I hope they continue it.

I do know I would rather be unimpressed with my qb yesterday, in a scrimmage vs a top 25 team on the road, than in 2 weeks when the stakes are real.

If #42 can play a fraction as well as he can talk he will be an all-american. Our pre-season All-American Center got the worst end of a verbal spat by being tossed after reacting adversely to some of the bantering back and forth.

Well, Scola is a rhetoric major.

When I first read that about Scola I was disappointed to hear it.  Apparently this Wheaton center was much worse and probably would have been ejected.  I hope Nate has the year he can while being a leader and giving the Bash D his intensity!

Nate has always talked a boat load of trash, that is just who he is. As long as he can keep it under control he should have a great senior season. He reminds me of Brad McKinley from Witt a few years ago, always talking trash, but backing it up on the field.

Fun NCAC Fact: Michigan's 59-9 win over Central Michigan featured the most points U of M has scored in an opener since 1905 when the Wolverines defeated Ohio Wesleyan 65-0.

I wouldn't say the Wheaton center (Clark) was worse, he was just the one they caught (and he was ejected). 42 was involved in an endless debate with the Wheaton OL during a timeout. The next play 42 was blitzing over the center and the two of them ended up on the ground. Wheaton's Clark stood up over 42 and was yelling at him, which drew the flag. It was Clark's 2nd unsportsmanlike of the scrimmage (for taunting) and he was tossed. Incidentally, the head referee who threw the flag was Jeff Otterby, a Wheaton grad. He got it right as Clark was the one who reacted.

Three of the incoming 7 QB's have been converted to safety:

SS Doug Sanders
FS Andrew Dennis
FS Kyle Groh

Huddleson may no longer be able to impact  OWU as a player on the field, but he will still be able to impact the team as a coach. Coach Watts brings him in as an assistant. I love this.

Many top middle linebackers are very intense.... they have to be.... goes with the position.   I remember when CJ Gum picked up a large offensive lineman and body slammed him to the ground in a game.   I bet the incredible hulk would have played middle linebacker.  ;)

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

Let's hope that as a senior Scola has learned something.  I recall that as a freshman he had two unsportsmanlike in one game--playing special teams, I think.
We've been over this territory before, but I just looked at the Oberlin roster, which now lists 36 players:  10 freshmen, 13 sophomores, 5 juniors (!), 8 seniors.   I don't quite know what to say.

sigma one

Well, going through the Oberlin roster I do have something to say.  Of the 36, one is a kicker.   Three are QBs (two freshmen).  Two are RBs.  Four are WRs.  Three are TEs.  Seven are OL.   One is a FB.  Four are DL.   Four are LBs.  Seven are DBs.
I know players can be moved around, but this is really, really thin at every position.   Four LBs.  Two RBs.  Four DL.  Will Obie be forced to play several or more players two ways as the season progresses, or even from the beginning?   I feel discouraged about the prospects.  Here, too, I'm assuming that there are several on the roster, as there are on almost all rosters, who should not be put on the field no matter their desire/heart.  I recall Oberlin coming to Wabash with seven basketball players, but this, boys, is different.
When is it appropriate for an adminstration to step in, as did Kenyon's years ago?  But not during the season.  That would be too bad for everybody.  I hope I am not reciting the sky is falling mantra.

Usee,

I specifically heard that the center was 5x worse than Nate and was super dirty. We can agree to disagree but I am just glad it sounded 2-way at the very least. If you look at his twitter account, it confirms the story - although I wasn't there but was intrigued to do some research. :)

Well, I already said he was at least 2x worse by virtue of the 2 flags and ejection. I  watched the scrimmage Saturday and if you want more details you can PM me.  Spencer Clark is not a dirty player.  I have seen most of his games for 2 years.  First 2 penalties he has received.  I have no opinion on 42 other than he is more of a rhetoric colonel than a major.

Another fun NCAC fact, also regarding Ohio Wesleyan (and even older).  In the early 1890's Jimmy Slagle played outfield for two seasons for Ohio Wesleyan.  He was later the centerfielder for the Cubs the last time they won the World Series in 1908.  Got this from "Touching Second" by John Evers (of Tinker to Evers to Chance fame).  Written in 1910.
