Wes, isn't 5 man pressure more about whipping people across from you than scheme? Not many schemes work when the other guy beats you

Yes and no. If you're just going to play me straight up as a defense, meaning that you bring dudes in the gaps they line up in, then yes. It's about who's got the bigger stones. But, the more games you use as a defensive front, the less it becomes about that and the more it becomes about exposing schematic weaknesses. Wabash also gets very creative with their games. Lots of slants, angles, and twists with LB blitzes. That's the thing about odd. It's a 3 man front, so your LB blitzes can come from anywhere. It sounds simple to say "well, just block your gap inside out" but that can get tough when you have NO clue where that comes from. Some teams run a very vanilla odd front, which seems like a total waste. Wabash is so good at bringing guys from 2 or even 3 gaps away. Typically you put your least athletic offensive linemen at guard. You want your best athletes at tackle. They have to set the width of the pocket and defend those edge rushers who are basically RB fast anymore. The guards are uncovered vs an odd front, meaning that as a defense, you have the opportunity to make those guys try to make plays in space.

A lot of teams try to pass pro odd with a BOB (big on big) scheme, meaning the tackles lock on to the ends and the center locks on to the nose. Doesn't matter where they go, those guys are man to man with those defenders. Then they leave the guards to pick up any blitzes, typically working inside out. Take any inside blitzer in your area, if one doesn't come, then work out for an edge blitzer. But, then you get in situations like this:

This is a 5 man pressure I've seen from Wabash against these type teams. Center has to work to his left to take the nose. That inside backer to the offense's right hits the B gap hard trying to get the RG to go with him, leaving the A gap wide open for the backside backer. Wabash will figure out how you pass pro, and they will exploit you. It also messes with zone blocking schemes. You've got guys twisting 2 gaps to the zone or away from the zone, which can really confuse a 19 year old kid. Wabash has dudes in that front 7. No doubt about it. But they put those dudes in great situations to succeed schematically. That's the difference.

Second quarter, Butler beating Witt 2-0.

Interesting game but these two commentators consistently yelling over each other is a level of cognitive dissonance only exceeded by a troop of primates during breeding season.  Witt's doing better than expected, but back to Wooster - WJ.   ::)

that was a great atmosphere today in Crawfordsville. Wabash defense was outstanding. Our fan base was nervously confidant coming into the game but WOW. Save 3-4 long balls and a couple of stupid/questionable penalties the final spread could have been much greater. The defense just wore out their offense and by the middle of the 3rd quarter their stands and players were sort of stunned (in my opinion which is nowhere near as knowledgable as Wally_Wabash or Bashbrohther). From reading the board I think they thought they would come in and roll. The Buresh pick-6 couldnt have come at a better time. we were down 14-7 and the momentum was definitely on HSC side - then bam. Wabash defense was everywhere lead by our 6'1 230 lb saftey A Brown and of course the Buresh Brothers. Holmes and Zurek are just huge and they just flat out pound people. Hopefully the one HSC fan who was spouting off so much earlier in the week has a new found appreciation of the top team in the 16th ranked conference, blah, blah, blah. See you next year and you will be in total awe by the number of fans Wabash brings down there. WAF

Oh, Gheny. This isn't the start to the season y'all needed.

edit:

Witt is within 6, 22-16.

Great game Bash! Started out a little rough with the 60yd td pass courtesy of Nance and Walker but the Wabash D stepped up and took care of business. I thought the Bash defensive backfield did a good job as Walker really got frustrated early grabbing db's facemask, jawing a lot with the db's, and looking for a lot of help from the ref. Seemed like quite a few times he wasn't able to run his pattern(on time anyway) as he was tied up at the line. Nance being on his back 6 times and who knows how many hurry ups didn't help the situation. HSC is a really good team and will win a lot of games this year. Nance and Walker is a great combo. Nance has a nice touch with the deep ball and Walker is strong, has great concentration, and can definitely catch bet his hands are as big as a dinner plate. Offense looked really good and Raeburn came with a good game plan short, simple, but effective. I don't know if Holmes is a 100% ye but still looked good and I sure would hate to be a db  and see Zurek coming straight at me full speed, then lowering that head a little bit like he does looking for contact. I would like to see a little more of him but hey the coaches had a great game plan on both sides of the ball today. Great game by everybody!
GO BASH!

After that fast start this has turned discouraging for Woo.  Not only are they down 44-17, but they're being physically dominated by W&J's O line.  They just ran 28 consecutive plays without a pass attempt.  And these were scoring drives, not burn clock and punt drives.

Bishopleftiesdad

After being down 27-3 Hiram is within 5 points ar 22-27, and has the ball.

wally_wabash

Wittenberg has also creeped back into their game.  They have the ball in plus territory down 22-16.

And W&J has dropped a fifty burger on the Scots.  Again.  Barnes and Owens can be as explosive as they want, but you can't win giving up 50.

Hiram making it interesting.

Witt needs a stop in a bad way.

Woo is too far behind now.

edit:

that was a massive pass play by Butler. Witt desperately needed a stop there on 3rd down.

Butler was driving to put it away and they fumbled. Witt has just under 3 minutes to score. WOW  :o

This is true by the way. These two guys do an AWFUL job of avoiding talking over each other.
