Hard to tell if DePauw has improved that much or if Witt just lost too much. Witt only has 1 sack in 7 quarters of football.

Wittenberg isn't the same kind of deal that they were last year.  BUT, they are still a very good team.  And given that in each of the last two years DePauw was out of this game as soon as the ball was kicked off, I think it's pretty easy to say that DePauw is much, much better than they were 12 months ago.  They aren't going to win tonight, but they haven't had their doors blown off either.

Speaking of doors blown off - Woo 49 and Obie 10 with over 12:00 left in the 3rd Qtr   :o

Witt isn't losing enough to be a mediocre team. Theyre still very good.

We knew DPU was going to be better. That first half against Witt tells us that's true.

A lot of football to be played but these two games in November are going to be tough.

OWU over Kenyon, 35-25.
OWU defense worries me. They are giving too much up to thse teams. They are definately not the pass happybteam of lastvyear. I think Watt is doing a good job of tailoring his O to his athlete's.

Try the SD stream. That's the one that's working well.

Yeah, the stream's good - just don't be fooled by the commentator constantly calling the LGs, Wittenberg.  ;)

Witt broadcaster just call DePauw Denison.
That's not bad, referee at Ohio-Idaho game last night called Ohio Miami

^^^^  That was probably well received in Athens.

Probably more disbelief that he had said it then anything else and it did bring a good chuckle. The scorn was reserved for that fine Ohio cornerback who is continually beat long and the coaching staff that recruited him.

How about a little Monday morning NCAC whiparound?  Why not.

Wabash 31, Denison 12 - Have to give some credit to the Big Red who really played a pretty good game here, especially on the heels of the 8 turnover debacle in Hiram.  Zero turnovers for the Big Red against a defense that is known for taking the ball away.  On the Wabash side, the LGs were just 2 of 12 on third downs which isn't good enough and they fumbled four times (there was a fifth case where the ball was on the ground on a punt return I believe, but that didn't make the boxscore) losing one.  Wabash was lucky to not lose more than one of those fumbles.  It wasn't the most well put together game I've seen Wabash play, but *checks book of football clichés* they got out of there with a road win in league play which is always tough to do.  I really shouldn't be too harsh.  Holmes and Zurek both went over 100 yards rushing in the game, my favorite player ever of the year Drake Christen scored a pair of TDs (and apparently dropped a shmoney which got him penalized).  Oh, on the second TD Wabash went empty backfield (which is RARE), got Drake lined up with a linebacker and that was it.  That's the kind of stuff you can do with #8.  He's fun to watch.

Allegheny 24, Hiram 21 - Tip of the hat to the Gators for getting back in the win column.  They didn't turn it over which doomed Denison the week before (just one TO for Allegheny), they didn't let Britton Lewis go bananas (2 catches, 14 yards), and they did a pretty good job against the run.  Nigro was 23-32 for 278 and didn't make any major mistakes which was part of the problem in 2013 for Allegheny.  This has to be pretty disappointing for Hiram who had a great chance to get to 3-0 before their upcoming double at Wooster and at Witt.

Witt 34, DePauw 17 - DePauw fumbled away their first snap and Witt quickly turned it into 7 points.  And that was kind of a microcosm of the evening for DePauw.  Despite the early mistake, DePauw got themselves back to even by halftime (17-17) and were having a lot of success on offense.  In the second half, DePauw just made mistake after mistake.  When the dust settled, DePauw had turned it over 7 times and failed to score in the second half.  The Jenkins to Culvahouse thing is going to be a big deal.  Jenkins wasn't great (19-41-1, 215 yards, 2 TDs) but it's clear that Witt isn't shy about letting him sling it.  DePauw won't turn it over 7 times again this year.  They're going to be a handful for anybody left on their schedule.

Wooster 63, Oberlin 10 - Oberlin led 10-7 here and then welp.  Probably not the last time we're going to see Wooster's offense light somebody up like that.  Can they do it on October 4?

OWU 35, Kenyon 25 - It's definitely a new day in Delaware.  They got 150 rushing yards out of their quarterback against Kenyon.  I watched a little bit of this one and Orsini runs the read really well.  This kid is going to be a handful in the next couple of years.  Really interesting game coming up this weekend between OWU and Denison.

firstdown

Wabash and Denison was hard played game.  The Wabash D sacked the quarterback 5 times and got a number of hits on the QB as well.  Unfortunately, some Denison players took umbrage at this and took some shots at the knees of the Wabash defensive players.  There is no need for that kind of play.

Fun stat appeared on ESPN today. Ohio State has won their last 40 games against in-state opponents. The last time they didn't win? In 1924 the Buckeyes tied the College of Wooster.

Not sure if this is common knowledge among you guys, but I thought it was entertaining.

I think the last time they lost to an in-state opponent was to Oberlin.  I feel like I've read/heard that somewhere.

It's always fun to go back to the early days and see who played and won where before it all became a big deal.

smedindy

It 'was' a big deal back in the day, too. Otherwise Purdue wouldn't have rigged their teams with ringers from the boiler plant before playing Wabash...

For an entertaining and educational account of the early history of college football--and how things have not changed all that much over the last 100+ years--pick up a copy of Dave Revsine's 2014 book THE OPENING KICKOFF:  THE TUMULTUOUS BIRTH OF A FOOTBALL NATION.  The quotation that announces what is to come in Revsine's book is from Ecclesiastics (1:9): What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again, there is nothing new under the sun.   The final sentence of the book's preface sums up Revsine's historical analysis--"Those who wonder why we can't "just go back to the way it used to be," might be surprised to find that, in fact, we have."
