Also of interest. You know who has never played a good team Wabash?

This guy:

Let's take a look at how QBs have fared in their first outing--against a team with a returning starter--stretching back to 2000.

2013 (Putko) - L
2012 (Florence) - L
2009 (Miracle) - L
2008 (Durbin) - L
2007 (Hudson) - W
2001 (Cornett) - W

In a year where Witt can't run the ball, good luck tossing Jenkins his helmet and saying "Go win this one."

Wabash Defense is not very kind to QB's...  (outside of what sounded like a ridiculous foul against Partridge off camera) it has been pretty much a hard nosed defense that get's after in a clean manner.

"Fear the Flock"

P.S.  Was anyone at the Hiram game that can tell the board what actually happened off camera?
Why should you go for it on 4th down?

I didn't see the play at all.  In related news, I can tell you that crushing a bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats apparently helps a barista keep half a dozen complex espresso orders straight.  Freaking UStream.

A few random thoughts for Wabash vs Witt.

First, Witt relies primarily on moving the ball through the air.  So did H-SC with probably the best receiver in D3.  Wabash focused on attacking Nash and will be hard after Jenkins.  The pressure will be on the Witt O line to protect him.  Second, Wabash used ball control against H-SC which resulted in a heavy imbalance in time of possession.  H-SC couldn't do much with its offense on the sidelines for the majority of the game and this also allowed the Wabash defense to rest as well.  It will be interesting to see how Witt decides to defend the Wabash ground attack, which was successful in Wabash's win in 2012, but missing last year due to injuries.  Witt has a good defense, but if it stacks the box to stop the run, it will open up Wabash's passing game.   Denison presented a similar problem for Witt with a good running game, but not quite the power running game that Wabash will present.  Finally, Witt has to be prepared for a right handed quarterback and a left handed quarterback.  The weather for Saturday looks to be ok and it should be a good game.

Let's Look at Witt's Rushing Production  VS. Game Result Against Wabash back to 2005

Witt                 Net Yards Rushing     Game Result
2013                145 yds.                    won
2012                162 yds.                    lost
2011                10 yds.                      lost
2010                186 yds.                    won
2009                187 yds.                    won
2008                65 yds.                      lost
2007                83 yds.                      lost
2006                222 yds.                    won
2005                106 yds.                    lost

One could draw from these stats that Witt needs to NET over 100 yards rushing to have a chance at winning this game.  Wabash has given up 100+ yards once this year  (233 to Wooster.. ????? We could not figure out that damn inside trap play for awhile)   Wabash has held (3) opponents to negative NET yards rushing.   We always think of Witt as a passing team,  it might be their ability to run on Saturday that will decide the ultimate outcome.   Something to watch for.

But on another note, I really think Witt needs this win.

Witt needs a swift and thorough beatdown.  Nothing less.

To be clear...nothing less

As an outsider with interest in this game, THIS is a very informative post.  +K

We're looking at an informative variety of stats over time, Witt v. Wabash.  One curious number that doesn't necessarily relate to the game on Saturday, but that I find interesting (also telling about Wabash's and Witt's records this year).
So far during 2014, through 8 games, Wabash has thrown a total of 16 passes in 4th quarters, completing 10 of them.  Putko has thrown only 7 (5 completions) in 3 games (none at all then in 5 games).  Rice has thrown only 5 (3 completions) in 2 games.  And Ty Preston has thrown 4 (completing 2) in his only action this year v. Kenyon.
Those 16 throws in 4th quarters are against a total of 178 passes for the entire year--all quarters.  Wabash has completed 118 passes on the year.
     Just messing with stats here.
Witt's 4th qtr numbers after the Butler loss during which Jenkins was 9 of 15 in the 4th qtr.
In the last 7 games, Jenkins has thrown 16x with 12 completions.  Bates has thrown 6x with 5 completions.
Absent Butler, then, Witt is 17 of 22 (1 INT).  Witt's passing total for the year:  160 of 254.

Yeah, I promise to let this be an unbiased analysis.

Let me start by saying that I do not believe that the hit was intentional, at all. But it was absolutely a judgment call for the referee. It wasn't outrageous that a penalty was called. Many fans around me were screaming for it from the outset, but I definitely think it was just a tough football play that resulted in injury. I do not believe the intent was there, but there was definitely a motivation to throw a flag as a ref.

I know this is all incredibly vague, but as a Hiram fan it upset me; and as a football fan I really felt for the kid from Wabash.

I got none of the breakfast cereal interruptions that Wally got for some reason. But that play wouldn't have been visible where it happened anyway. It was below the lower right part of the screen and all I saw was the Hiram sideline react.

I will say this, without having seen it, the Hiram broadcast crew did not show themselves to be prone to hyperbole through the rest of the game. Their reaction may very well have been justified. I simply don't know and have no basis to accuse them of overreacting.

SigmaOne,

I got dizzy reading your post.  Can you summarize your conclusion(s)?  Ty Preston??  Bates?  You lost me brother?

BashDad - that was classic.  He's a skinny dude.  I hope the Bash D brings the heat!  Hopefully the Bash cover guys will be the best they've seen.

BashBro- good stuff.  I'm looking forward to detailed matchup comparisons later in the week.  I think the Bash O has too many options for Witt.

I still can't stand stadiums without stands on the visitor's side - especially for huge games like this.  It drives me crazy.
