Hey, remember how Wabash went on a 43-12 run in the 2002 game against Witt?

I did not. This game is crazy.

Everything about that game was crazy.  Knott checking off for an 80 yard bomb to Summers was maybe the best thing ever.  Until Knott's TD pass into the wind and through double coverage to Bronaugh in the playoff game vs. Witt later that season, which I believe still stands as the greatest thing ever.

Can't forget Blair Hammer's sack and fumble recovery,  Jake Knott hitting a quick TD pass after the turnover, and then Blair Hammer immediately getting another sack, forcing a fumble/or interception and then rumbling and stumbling 30 yards with the ball for another TD in the 2002 playoff game.  Both games in 2002 were things of beauty.

2002:  Wabash 46--Wittenberg 43.  In Springfield.  Wabash wins in overtime on a Server FG after Witt's missed FG on their first OT possession.  Both teams with around 500 yds in total offense when they both came into the game ranked in the top 5 or 6 in DIII in total defense.  Knott and Cornett both throw for 350+ yards.  That was, I think Witt's first conference loss in about 5 years.

What was the lowest combined rankings of these teams in a previous matchup?

In 2004, neither team was ranked going into the game.  Wabash had been ranked the week before, then lost to Wooster and fell back out.

Again 2005, neither team was ranked going into the game, but Wabash got into the rankings after beating Wittenberg (again).  Funny about that season is that it took Wabash until week 8 just to make the top 25, then three weeks later they were a #1 seed in the tournament.  2005 Wabash had to earn it the hard way.  Damn good team though.  One of the best Wabash has ever had.

I'm pretty sure that's the last time neither team was ranked going into the game.

Unfortunately missed this 2002 game and there was not webcast at that time.... thus web radio was the only method of tuning in.... was amazing to hear though.

To me,  the 2003 game was one of my favorites......   1.  #3's first Witt game  2. A game that was never close   3. a 4th Qtr. Nick Fanelli 68 yd interception return that got everyone in the Stadium giddy.  (Bam 41-14)

For as much as 2002 sent a signal to Witt that the NCAC was no longer a lay down for them...   2003 sent a message that Wabash had arrived.

Followed by a fracas behind one of the end zones after the game between some Wabash fans and Witt players, yes?

If I recall, I think that was just a spirited debate about the pros and cons of the EU and the widespread adoption of the Euro.

Wasn't 2002 Witt's Homecoming?

Yes it was. Played like a home game for Wabash though. We were LOUD.

I read this the other way. I assumed HCAlum meant the lowest number (ie the highest combined ranking - so #7 and #10 being 17 would be "lower" than #10 vs #18 being 28).
I was small but made up for it by being slow...
