On the issue of DPU fans' attendance at Saturday's Bell Game, here is what I've been told.  DPU was given 2500 tickets, down a bunch from previous years at Hollett.  Of these, perhaps 500 were to be used as comps for players' and coaches' families, and for administrators, faculty, etc.  That leaves around 2000.  DPU did not sell all the remaining tickets; they came up about plus or minus 500 short.  By the way, this is the lowest number of tickets DePauw has requested since I don't know when.
Reports were that DPU students came to Crawfordsville, and then stayed in the parking lots to tailgate during the game.  How many of them bought a ticket and didn't use it, and how many didn't even bother to buy is a guess.   The eyeball tests tells me that student attendance was way, way down from even two years ago.
What this means for the future is interesting if Wabash wins in Greencastle next year.  It takes a lot of money, comparatively speaking, to erect the temporary stands, and ticket sales have to be good if the configuration is to remain as this year.  And even this year Wabash did not erect as many stands for the visiting team's fans as they have in the past.  To put up stands that no one sits in is a waste.
The Monon Bell rivalry is sacred to Wabash, and once was to DePauw (still is to the dedicated).  Develop all the theories you want about watching on TV, etc.  If DPU becomes competitive, and I believe they will (and with their record this year should have been, but were not), and then if the attendance doesn't pick up, well . . .I hope Wabash keeps the bell indefinitely.  Wabash fans will continue to attend in big numbers--and have in the past when Wabash lost for multiple years.

Hilarious...I love it...was a great moment...A great Bell moment...

Watching the game on DVR - just saw this - ugh.  I actually feel for the kid - this happened to me at Wabash trying to leg out a triple (I eventually got there, but still embarrassing at the time).  Think it was against DePauw too.  But definitely not on TV and not with the Bell on the line.  At least in baseball you aren't down on contact!

Happened to Knott in the '02 Bell Game, I think it was...not quite as dramatically.

According to the play-by-play, at the time/score depicted in the screen shot, DePauw completed a 74-yard pass that ended at the Wabash 6-yard line.  I am guessing that the poor DPU receiver tripped and fell of his own accord.

Lost his balance and fell down, otherwise he scores.

Woods came trucking from the other side of the field and the DePauw kid kept looking back to see where Woods was at, looked one too many times, and tripped on the BW3 sprinkler head.

It could be worse.  My son once played a soccer game on a field liberally covered with goose guano!  VERY unpleasant for slide-tackles or (especially) nose dives!

No mention of video broadcast. Pat mentioned on the podcast that ncaa doesn't allow pay per view of video streams. I took the comment as a shot directed at mount union. Can someone elaborate on what the postseason video broadcast rules are? I'm sure they'd sell the broadcast rights to any network willing to buy them.

I will not miss Wittenberg's single non-hd camera setup.

Not at Mount Union because they don't stream their games at all in 2014.  Tape delay at 1 a.m. in 2014 is still a great option for them.  There are some places out there that do a pay per view of their live web streams- Linfield is one- and that's what they were talking about there.

I'm not sure exactly how those broadcast rights work, but I think the web pays would basically count as admission and eventually take away from the expense reimbursement that the host schools get from the NCAA.  So there's really no upshot for schools to ask people to pay for the stream.

I based that off of trying to watch the last five minutes of jc mount game and was confronted with a pay wall. Maybe I landed on the wrong page

wabndy is correct, there was a PPV live stream of the JCU/Mount game.  They did the same thing for the Heidelberg game.  It's just a live feed of the TV broadcast that will be shown on tape delay later.  It was $9.95 I believe.

That's my mistake. And very charitable of STO to let people watch for only ten bucks a pop.

Revenue streams are revenue streams.

Franciscan (Steubenville) charges for its hoops games. I found that out when seeing if they'd win a game a last season after two winless years. I think they were charging 6.95...
