I'm thinking that Wabash opens with a Michigan team in 2016.  And there's nothing wrong with that.

If it were a top of the MIAA team like Albion that makes me happy. That's a decent game. And we have some history. We played them a bunch in the 90s, including their Stagg Bowl championship season. Beat them on the road in 97 if I recall. Would be nice to get the "Albion your girlfriend" chant back, too.  :P

If it's Alma or K-zoo, then "meh".

I would like to see the Wabash/Hope series renewed.  Unfortunately, I don't think that will happen for a long time. Although Wabash holds the advantage in wins, those games were always tough and exciting.

This is now ancient history but I remember Carlson refusing to schedule Albion ever again.  I think he felt that we got a little too much home cookin from the MIAA.

Do we have a home and home announced yet for 2016-17?
I know this is not an exhaustive list, but here are some good choices for a respectable nonconference matchup that would meet what I would imagine the normal criteria along with the last year we played them:
Franklin (2007), Hanover (2013), Albion (2005-playoffs, 1997), Hope (1997), NCC (2011 - playoffs), Wheaton (2008-playoffs, 2001), IWU(2009-playoffs, 1983), Chicago (2011), CWRU (2007 & 2008 - playoffs, 1949), Wash. U (2012), Rose Hulman (1997), MSJ (2007-playoffs, 1999).

All of this to say is that we have a lot of really good opponents that we have a lot of history with - all within a 5 hour bus ride.  I'm glad the gentlemens classic happened.  But with only one non-conference game every year and a home and home being the standard contract, going to Delaware or Wisconsin to pick up a series seems a bit of a stretch.

A home and home with Hope would be fun at some point.  The MIAA has done a really smart thing by entering into September scheduling partnerships with other leagues.  I don't know if there is a future for the partnership with the CCIW beyond 2017 after which the CCIW will be pretty self-sufficient from a scheduling standpoint.  That may open up an opportunity for a series with Hope.

Hope would be a good matchup too. Always thought it interesting that Hope used to play us and DePauw so regularly.

I'd think the MIAA would have to set up a scheduling partnership on behalf of its teams since they only play a 6 game in-conference schedule.  Finding non-conference games for weeks 1 and 2 has got to be a cakewalk compared to trying to land games for weeks 3, 4, or 5.  If the 7 football playing members of the MIAA all tried to go shopping within 500 miles for an opponent for weeks 4 or 5 without any coordinated effort - then an non D3 opponent and/or a long flight would likely be the only options.  The HCAC plays 8 conference games, The NCAC and OAC 9, the CCIW 7.  There is far less reason for the NCAC or OAC to enter into a coordinated agreement.  With only one game to fill, I'd much rather have the flexibility of scheduling who I want and the ability to put it in either week 1 or 2.

Li'l Giant

I wasn't a fan of that coordinating agreement with the UAA when we had 3 non-con games. I certainly don't see why we would do one now with a 9 game conference schedule.

The Albion 'problem' was that since they played Week 1, they had a game under their belt when they played Wabash. And, at times, Wabash played a nine-game schedule so Albion would roll in with TWO games under their belt and Wabash was just starting. That happened once or twice. I don't think that's an issue now;.

I'm hoping that we don't go back to not playing Week 1, regardless of opponent.

Sir Battlescars

I wouldn't mind seeing the OAC and NCAC partner up for the non-conference game. Aside from Mount Union, I think these conferences are pretty similar. Year in and year out you've got in both conferences, a couple of really good teams at the top, a couple of really bad teams at the bottom, and everyone in the middle is decent. And considering the close locality these schools have to each other, it seems to make sense. And I think the fans will really enjoy it too.

I would like to see another shot at IWU...that was a heartbreaker in 2009...I t was really a great game...two dads from the their conference have said to me it was one of the best played games of college football they have ever seen...It certainly was a great game...just a rough result with the way it happened...

There are some of us who thought the outcome was wonderful! ;D  I was so giddy, I actually thought we had at least a slight chance at UWW the next week! :o
